DmC: Devil May Cry review: hell to pay

Series protagonist Dante has been reimagined as a younger, more troubled half-demon in DmC. His days of boozing and womanizing are brought to an end as he finds himself hunted by the evil army of Mundus, king of the demons. These forces drag Dante into the antagonistic alternate reality Limbo, where he meets a fringe group of hold-outs against Mundus and helps launch a revolution. A more modern setting serves as the key differentiator from DmC's forebears. While levels mostly take place in Limbo, much of the story progresses in the real world, in a familiar city setting with satirical subplots inspired by our corporate, commercialized culture. For example, Dante discovers that the demons maintain control via two obvious methods: soft drinks and right-wing television...

Capcom reports fiscal 2012 results, reiterates focus on streamlining business and cutting costs

Capcom reported financial results for its 2012 fiscal year today, posting a significant drop in net income due to restructuring costs as the company shifts focus for a future in which it expects development costs to rise on next-generation consoles. The Japanese publisher's 2012 fiscal year ran from April 1, 2012, through March 31, 2013. Capcom tallied net sales of 94.08 billion yen ($953.2 million) for the full year, a 14.6 percent jump from the 82.07 billion yen ($831.3 million) it recorded in the 2011 fiscal year. But net income dropped by 55.8 percent from 6.72 billion yen ($68.1 million) in fiscal 2011 to 2.97 billion yen ($30.1 million) this past year. The major drop in Capcom's net income resulted largely from a "special loss" of 6.95 billion yen ($70.4 million) associated...

Vergil's Downfall expansion for DmC: Devil May Cry launching March 5 on PS3 and PC, March 6 on Xbox 360

DmC: Devil May Cry publisher Capcom will launch the game's Vergil's Downfall expansion March 5 on PlayStation 3 and Windows PC, and March 6 on Xbox 360, the company announced today. It's a slight delay — the company told Polygon last week that the DLC would be released by the end of February. The DLC will cost $8.99 on PlayStation Network and Windows PC, and 720 Microsoft Points ($9) on Xbox Live. It contains a new story campaign that is three to five hours long and features Dante's twin brother, Vergil. The content was a pre-order bonus, so those customers will be able to download it at no extra cost. We recently had a chance to go hands-on with Vergil's Downfall and interview senior producer Alex Jones. You can check out our impressions here, and watch some gameplay footage from...

DmC's Vergil's Downfall DLC puts a new coat of paint on a familiar experience

At a press event earlier this week, Capcom USA senior producer Alex Jones gave media a close look at DmC downloadable side story Vergil's Downfall, a new campaign starring hero Dante's brother Vergil. "We knew up-front we were going to do some kind of DLC, from the very start of the project, since you basically have to these days," he said in an interview with Polygon. According to Jones, the idea of a playable Vergil first came about when the development team was considering a co-op mode for DmC. "[We] very quickly set that aside because we wanted to just tell Dante's story in the main game and didn't want to create the additional work that making co-op would come with. But as we did press and stuff, and read some of the forums, it became clear fans really liked the idea of a...

Capcom devs describe the 'long-distance romance' with Ninja Theory that led to DmC

The video-game industry is littered with stories of game developers in the U.S. and Europe trying to work with publishers in Japan and finding it a painful experience. While the collaboration between Capcom and England-based Ninja Theory wound up producing the fairly well-reviewed DmC: Devil May Cry, it was far from smooth sailing from start to finish for the three-year-long project. "Oh, there were [difficulties]," Capcom producer Motohide Eshiro said in an interview published in this week's Famitsu magazine. "But a lot about it expanded our perspectives and stimulated us in new ways, so it was a really great experience." One problem well familiar to anyone in international business is that things which have a nice, simple word in one language turns into a drawn-out explanation in...

Japan Review Check: DmC: Devil May Cry, LittleBigPlanet Karting

Here's a quick summary of the console titles coming out next week in Japan, courtesy of the review pages of Famitsu magazine. It's a slow post-holiday week, but there's one hotly-anticipated title on offer, at least: - DmC: Devil May Cry (8/9/8/9, 34 points out of 40): The Ninja Theory-developed reboot of Capcom's stylish action series did pretty well over in Famitsu, although not outstandingly. "The game's core fun of using guns and swords and such to mow down foes is still there," wrote editor Ranbu Yoshida. "The wild side of the Dante you see here really looms large, giving him a cool edge. Once you get used to the controls, which use the L and R buttons for different things, you'll be able to launch a wide variety of combos and expand your attacks." "This looks like a completely...
