Mario's creator is fighting for the heart of the Wii U, but it might be too late

There was an awkward moment in the beginning of that spring 2013 interview when I suddenly realized that I didn't know the official title for Miyamoto, a man who I've interviewed countless times and perhaps the most recognizable game maker in the world. That moment became more awkward when it became apparent that Miyamoto didn't really know his own title either. I suppose officially he has one, something like senior game developer, but unofficially he is the soul of the beloved company, its smiling face, its heart. And that was never more apparent in that spring meeting then when I asked Miyamoto about the lethargic sales of the Wii U. It was obvious it was a point of personal pride, hurt pride, that it wasn't doing better. And he knew it could, that if people could just understand...

How pinball and boardwalk amusements gave rise to video games

But this story fails to take into account a huge history of boardwalk and pinball games that exerted immense cultural influence on the early days of video games, most especially in arcades, which is still being felt today. This summer a new exhibit at The Strong's National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY, will seek to connect today's games with the mechanical amusements of the past, stretching back to the early years of the 20th Century. The exhibit, called The Boardwalk Arcade and Pinball Playfields, will feature a disparate selection of machines including some of the earliest boardwalk games and seminal pinball machines such as Ballyhoo (1932), Humpty Dumpty (1947) and Triple Action (1948). Last year, the museum held a smaller exhibit of arcane arcade machines that organizers say...

Synth, big band jazz and the remaking of Donkey Kong Country's amazing sound

Fortunately, times have changed since Wise made a name for himself in a two-decade-long career as the house composer for Rare, the British studio that first developed the Donkey Kong Country series for Nintendo. The musician's return to his retro roots, after leaving the studio in 2009, just happens to coincide with some new sound technology. "The old technology was hard," Wise tells us. "Everything was hand-coded. It was a lot of effort to get it to sound as good as it eventually ended up. It took a lot of time and a lot of brain power, and to do it all again that way, I'm not sure it would be possible. If we did it the old way we'd be on it five or six years." At the time of developing the original Donkey Kong Country the team at Rare was working between 12 to 16 hours, seven days a...
