The musician's return to his retro roots, after leaving the studio in 2009, just happens to coincide with some new sound technology. "The old technology was hard," Wise tells us. Here's the launch trailer for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, which arrives today for Wii U. The Retro Studios platformer is rated by Polygon's reviewer as "a high point for the series" that "adds intelligently to the formula, with new characters that imbue subtle nuance to the gameplay, a better-tuned challenge level and an increased emphasis on replay value." Developer Project Sora's iteration of the fighting game franchise Super Smash Bros. will add Donkey Kong's Diddy Kong to its roster of fighters, according to the game's official website. According to an announcement on the Miiverse by game director Masahiro Sakurai, Diddy Kong's flexibility has been increased for the latest iteration. Diddy Kong will join a roster of confirmed well-known characters like Little Mac, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Zelda, Princess Rosalina and her companion star-creature Luma, Mega Man, Sonic, the Animal Crossing Villager, the Wii Fit trainer and Marth from Fire Emblem. Jeff Willms, winner of the 2012 Kong Off 2 Donkey Kong world championships, took home the grand prize for the second year in a row following The Kong Off 3 this weekend. Willms — who hails from Ontario, Canada — obtained a high score of 1,096,200 points over the three-day event, beating out second place winner Ross Benziger of Portland, Ore. by 29,100 points. Willms also has the fourth-highest Donkey Kong score ever recorded since the game's launch in 1981; the world record of 1,138,600 points is still held by Dr. Hank Chien of New York City. A new Nintendo Direct scheduled for tomorrow morning will offer viewers more information on upcoming Wii U and 3DS titles that will launch later this year, Nintendo announced today. Titles possibly featured in the upcoming presentation could include The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Sonic Lost World, Professor Layton, Azran Legacy and Pokémon X and Y, along with Wii U titles such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, Super Mario 3D World, Wii Party U and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. The presentation will be broadcast simultaneously worldwide Oct. 1 at 10 a.m. ET and 7 a.m. PT. The previous Nintendo Direct aired on Sept. 8 and announced that Capcom's Nintendo 3DS game, Monster Hunter 4, will include tie-ins to two classic Nintendo franchises.

Nintendo is delivering a smattering of retro classics to the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console services later this year, including Super Mario Bros. 3 and Tecmo Bowl, the company announced during a Nintendo Direct presentation today. Super Mario Bros. 3 will be available on both Wii U and 3DS Virtual Consoles, while the following games will be released on 3DS Virtual Console: Summer Carnival '92: Recca, the NES version of Donkey Kong (Aug. 15), Wario Land 3 (Aug. 29) and Tecmo Bowl (this fall).

Nintendo is bringing Pikmin 3, Wind Waker HD and a handful of other Wii U and 3DS games to Comic-Con International this weekend, as well as to a special gaming lounge adjacent to the convention that will be open to the general public, the company announced today. YouTube user Michael Birken spent 11 months re-creating 5,722 still images through 4,800 Post-it notes to make a stop-motion tribute to Ms. Pac-Man and NES arcade game Donkey Kong. The video, which you can watch above, features Ms. Pac-Man and Mario adventuring on walls in everyday locations. According to Birken's YouTube post, recordings were printed out one frame at a time and posted on various spots around his office. Stop-motion has been used before to bring life to classic franchises. YouTube user FinalCutKing used 7,000 Post-it notes to re-create Super Mario World in a minute and a half-long video.
