The Dark Mod standalone unleashed with v 2.0 rollout

Looking Glass Studios' The Dark Mod, a total conversion mod developed to "recreate the tone and gameplay of the original Thief series," is now a standalone stealth game with the release of v 2.0. The Dark Mod was initially developed because its creators wanted to see what a Thief game would like in a "more modern engine."  Until now, previous versions of the mod required Doom 3 to run.  Development of The Dark Mod began in 2004, with the first beta releasing in 2008 followed by v 1.0 rollout in 2009. Interested parties can download the game directly from The Dark Mod website. Unfortunately, its servers are taking a beating so Looking Glass Studios have made a torrent available. There are currently more than 60 fan missions available with an unofficial campaign in...

Carmack on next-gen console hardware: 'very close,' 'very good'

id Software technical director John Carmack is impressed with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but said he hadn't done enough benchmarking to crown a winner in the next-gen console war during his infamously lengthy QuakeCon 2013 keynote address. Carmack kicked off his speech by addressing the "elephant in the room," discussing the arrival of a new console generation to a crowd of attendees at the largely PC-focused event. He's optimistic about the coming console cycle, commenting that it's "obviously going to be a good thing for gamers, developers, and an excellent thing for AMD." He said he hasn't run quite enough tests on the hardware for the two consoles, but said they're both "very close, and very good." When asked for an A-over-B comparison, however, Carmack is slow to judge. "...

Doom 3 no longer included in Oculus Rift deal

Doom 3 BFG will no longer be included in the launch shipment of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, according to an update by tech creators OculusVR to buyers of the development kit. In the update, the Oculus Rift developers were reportedly "informed that DOOM 3 BFG Edition will not support the Rift development kit by the time we begin shipping." Skyrim, Fallout: New Vegas and Doom 3 BFG Edition all marked down on Steam

Bethesda has permanently reduced the prices of three of its titles on the Steam distribution platform: Fallout: New Vegas, Doom 3 BFG Edition and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition, which combines Obsidian's open-world RPG with its four DLC expansion packs, now retails for $19.99, exactly $10 more than the non-premium version of the game. Doom 3 BFG Edition is also now permanently marked down to $19.99, a $10 price cut from the game's former cost. Skyrim is still a bit pricier than the other two, clocking in at $39.99 — pretty much the standard MSRP for the game at retailers like GameStop and Amazon.

Half-Life 2 modded to add head and gun tracking ahead of Oculus Rift

Half-Life 2 now has a virtual reality mod that adds head and gun tracking, and the mod's creator says he will support the Oculus Rift headset once he receives his developer unit. The creator, Nathan Andrews, implemented his mod with a modified Sony HMZ-T1 3D headset, which does not offer native head tracking. Instead, he used a Hillcrest sensor for head tracking, and taped another one to a wireless Top Shot Elite gun controller to track the weapon's movements. According to Andrews, the trackers are the same ones John Carmack used in demos of Doom 3: BFG Edition with an early Oculus Rift prototype. "Once the official Rift [APIs] are available I'll integrate them," he said in the description for the video above. The mod works with Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One and Half-Life 2:...

Sinful Robot developing 'virtual reality erotic encounters' for Oculus Rift VR headset

The Oculus Rift virtual reality headset has a new supporter in developer Sinful Robot, an Irvine, California-based start up that plans to bring "immersive virtual reality erotic encounters" to the headset designed with video games in mind. Sinful Robot announced its intentions to bring an "erotic adventure game" to the Rift — and "other similar technologies" — through its website and a post on Reddit by company co-founder and creative director Jeroen Van den Bosch. "I have been waiting for many years for technology to become immersive enough so it [tricks] your brain to accept the virtual reality as reality, but the Rift does really do that," Van den Bosch wrote on Reddit. "So now we can finally make an erotic adventure game that will actually be exciting!" Sinful Robot's...
