Valve's 'Free To Play' Dota 2 documentary hits March 19

Free to Play, Valve's documentary about three Dota 2 players, will arrive on Steam March 19, the company announced today. Free to Play will also be screened publicly March 18 at the Castro Theater in San Francisco, and tickets are available at Eventbrite. Free to Play follows three international Dota 2 players: Danylo "Dendi" Ishutin from Ukraine, Benedict "HyHy" Lim from Singapore and Clinton "Fear" Loomis from the United States. MLG and JoinDota to hold six-week, $60K Dota 2 tournament

Major League Gaming and JoinDota are coming together to hold the six-week, $60,000 TKO tournament Feb. 4 through March 22. MLG.tv and JoinDota will broadcast between six and eight Dota 2 matches each day of the international tournament, where teams will complete within their geographic regions in round robin stages followed by a championship match. The first round robin stage begins Feb. 4, and championship matches will take place March 22. You can see a competition schedule at MLG's official site. Organizers will allocate $30,000 per region with $14,000 for first place, $8,500 for second, $4,500 for third and $1,500 for fourth and fifth. World of Warcraft composer forms video game tribute band

The lead composer on World of Warcraft announced his video game tribute band Critical Hit today, along with the band's debut album, which includes covers of the main themes from Tetris, Pokémon, Halo 2 and Metal Gear Solid 2. Jason Hayes is an in-house composer for Blizzard Entertainment. He has contributed to the soundtracks of video games like Dota 2, StarCraft, Warcraft 3, Diablo 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. For Critical Hit, he brings together professional violinists, guitarists, pianists, flautists and percussionists to perform original arrangements from some of the world's most well-known video games. MLG Fall Invitational set for Oct. 18-19 at Full Sail University

This year's MLG Fall Invitational is taking place this weekend, Oct. 18-19, at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Fla., Major League Gaming said today. The two-day tournament will feature two games: Valve's Dota 2 on Friday and Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 on Saturday, with the players competing for a $15,000 prize pool for each game. The winning Dota 2 team will secure a spot at the International Competition at the MLG Championship, which will run from Nov. 22-24 in Columbus, Ohio. Valve unveiling Dota 2 documentary throughout June

Dota 2 developer Valve is unveiling its upcoming eSports documentary Free to Play for the first time starting June 11, according to an email sent by the company to various users as reported by Kotaku. The company is inviting gamers currently part of its official playtester list to travel to the Bellevue offices to view the two hour-long in-production film. Valve marketing head Doug Lombardi later confirmed to Kotaku that the company is "Beta testing the documentary on The International." The International is the annual Seattle-based Dota 2 tournament in which players from across the globe compete for a cash prize. Dota 2 update adds the congested hero Rigwarl the Bristleback to the battlefield

A recent update to Dota 2 added a new character, Rigwarl the Bristleback, to Valve's multiplayer online battle arena alongside a host of tweaks and changes, according to patch notes posted on Steam. Bristleback arrived in Dota 2 with an update released March 28. According to his official profile, his skills include Viscous Nasal Goo, which "covers a target in snot, causing it to have reduced armor and movement speed," Quill Spray, which pierces enemies, Bristleback, in which he covers his back in spines to reduce damage taken and Warpath, which allows him to move faster and cause more damage every time he casts a spell.
