The International Dota 2 tournament watched by more than 20M viewers, Valve says

More than 20 million people tuned in to watch this year's annual Dota 2 championship tournament, The International 4, according to a release from Valve. Valve said that this year's International Dota 2 Championships had "well over 2 million" peak concurrent viewers, more than double last year's peak. This year's International tournament was streamed through online service Twitch in multiple languages, with channels tailored for newcomers and those who preferred to watch "spoiler-free" and at their own pace. The International matches were also viewable in-game and through ESPN. While this year's International Dota 2 Championships saw impressive growth, it lagged behind the most recent League of Legends season finals. One of Dota 2's chief rivals in the genre drew 32 million viewers...

Dota 2 team Newbee just won The International 4 — along with the largest eSports prize pool in history

At this morning's Dota 2 International world championships, Newbee won the gold, and a winner's purse of more than $5 million. Chinese team Newbee fought back from a 7-8 record in single-match play earlier this month to win five consecutive sets, securing their place in the winners bracket for the final. Fellow Chinese team ViCi Gaming sat at the top of the single-match stage with a 12-3 record, though they lost their match against Newbee last Friday afternoon. As a result, they had to fight through the entirety of the main event brackets, beating US team Evil Geniuses Sunday night. The Grand Final started this morning with a commanding win by ViCi as they gave Newbee a rare shellacking. But Newbee turned the tables on ViCi entirely, routing them in three straight games to become...

The International Dota 2 championship Grand Finals begin today - here's how to watch

After months of qualifiers, single-match play, and multiple brackets, Valve's The International 4 world championship of Dota 2 ends today with the Grand Finals between Chinese teams ViCi Gaming and Newbee. Unlike the rest of this weekend's main event, the finals are a best of five series — the first team to take three wins takes home first place, and a more than $5 million USD purse. Luckily, there are a number of ways to watch today's match. The TI4 Grand Finals are being broadcast live on ESPN3 — this is available through ESPN's web player if you have a valid cable television subscription, and is also live on any of their many live apps, including the ones on Xbox One and Xbox 360. You can also watch all Dota 2 finals coverage on Twitch, at twitch.tv/dota2ti. Even better, if...

The Dota 2 International championship Grand Finals matchup has been decided

After two weeks of single-match play, eliminations, and the final bracket, Valve's International Dota 2 championship is down to just two teams: the dark horse Chinese team Newbee, who came back from a losing record during single-match play to win straight sets without losing a game in a week of play, and ViCi Gaming. ViCi started strong against US squad Evil Geniuses with a 16 minute win in game one, but suffered a resounding defeat in game two. ViCi regained their footing in a quick game three to secure a berth in the finals against their fellow Chinese team Newbee. With ViCI advancing to the grand finals, fans are looking to Monday, when the two teams will play a best-of-5 series to determine the winner of the International and take home a purse of more than $5 million USD. This is...

Goblin Techies return to Dota at The International

The Goblin Techies hero — a mainstay of the original Dota — made its return to Dota 2 at The International 2014, yesterday a surprise selection of Evil Geniuses player Arteezy. Here's a look at the Techie in the selection screen. A special taunt for the Techies was a stretch goal for The International's fund raising campaign, one easily surpassed by record sales of The Compendium, the tournament's virtual playbook. That taunt tipped players off to the idea Techies might return, but they didn't expect to see them revealed in this way. For more on The International, see Polygon's ongoing coverage, tune in on Twitch or ESPN's WatchESPN app, and see our breakdown of how The International's prize pool compares to other payouts in major athletics.

Day three of the 2014 International Dota 2 world championship begins with old favorites going home

After two days of developer Valve's 2014 International Dota 2 championship, no previous champions remain standing. Crowd-favorite Ukrainian team Na'Vi was eliminated in a hotly-contested set that went to three games, eliminated by North American Dota 2 team Cloud 9 — who later suffered their own setback as they lost the first game of their set to Chinese team ViCi Gaming late Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, 2012 International champions Invictus Gaming, or iG, went three games in their set against fellow Chinese team LGD. LGD handed iG a loss in the first match of the set in just 32 minutes, but iG regained some momentum in game two with a win. But their comeback was short-lived, as LGD dominated iG from start to finish over their 45 minute third game. With that, the TI2 winners were...

Dota 2 champs will be paid way more than Super Bowl, World Series winners

There are a number of ways to frame the size of the prize pool for The International — the world championships for Dota 2, taking place this weekend. Perhaps the best is this: The oldest major golf championship is being contested at the same time, for less money. Dota 2's combined prize pool, funded by the sale of a virtual program to fans, is $10,887,235, awarded to 14 teams comprising 5 players each. The winning team at The International 2014 will get $5,008,128. With five players to a side, that's $1,001,625.60 each. The Open Championship (known in the U.S. as the British Open) will divide $9.2 million among 156 entrants. The winner of The British Open — Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland is the leader, by six strokes, after three rounds — will claim $1,196,055 for himself. Also...

Chinese team Newbee sets the tone going into day two of The International Dota 2 championships

After their dominating performance in phase three and their impressive sweep of yesterday's opening day of The International's main event, the narrative of the Dota 2 world championship has become "can anyone beat Newbee?" Newbee exited phase two of TI4 with a losing record of 7-8, but it was enough to secure a chance at the main event. Since phase three started last Sunday, something finally clicked, and Newbee has won five consecutive series, rarely dropping even a game. Yesterday, they defeated the two best teams coming out of the initial round of the tournament, ViCi and Evil Geniuses. Newbee's final game yesterday against the latter yesterday was so one-sided that fans started leaving the venue early. Now, Newbee have secured one of two spots in Monday's grand finals, competing...
