Frostbite 3 engine doesn't support Wii U, says EA DICE

EA DICE's Frostbite 3 engine doesn't support Wii U, said Patrick Bach, executive producer on the Battlefield franchise at the studio, in an interview with Eurogamer. "We right now don't have support for the Wii U in the Frostbite engine," said Bach, explaining that "we don't want to back down from what we see as our low-spec machines." Those "low-spec machines" are the main current-generation consoles, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Battlefield 4's lead development platform is Windows PC, according to Bach, and the game will also be available on PlayStation 4. "We don't want to ship different games dependent on the platform," said Tobias Dahl, producer of Battlefield 4's single-player campaign. "We need to set the limit somewhere, to have the lowest spec for this title." Bach added...

Dragon Age 2 artists were 'disappointed' by visuals, Inquisition to use Frostbite engine

Dragon Age 2's artists were "slightly disappointed" about how their work was presented with the game's Eclipse engine, according to a recent interview with Neil Thompson, BioWare's director of art and animation. Speaking with the Official Xbox Magazine, Thompson said that Dragon Age 3: Inquisition will not face the same visual problems as Dragon Age 2. "Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 were both done using BioWare's own Eclipse engine, and it was starting to creak a little bit when Dragon Age 2 came out," Thompson said. "Inquisition is being done on the Frostbite 2 engine and it is an astonishingly powerful engine." According to Thompson, Inquisition will not use a "subdued color palette and harsh brown feel" for its fantasy settings. "Can you make fantasy beautiful in a...

Dragon Age 3 influenced by Skyrim and older role-playing games, BioWare to focus on exploration

BioWare's upcoming Dragon Age 3 will borrow a few pages out of the book of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, as well as older role-playing games like Baldur's Gate, BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn said in an interview featured in the latest print edition of Game Informer. According to Flynn, role-playing games should be emphasizing exploration, much like in older BioWare role-playing titles including 1998's Baldur's Gate and 2002's Neverwinter Nights. Although two of BioWare's key franchises, Mass Effect and Dragon Age, have moved away from this ideal, says Flynn, it's something the company wants to return to with Dragon Age 3. "You can't look at a game like Skyrim and not think about how impressive what they've accomplished is โ€” or [think] that's an interesting new direction or that...

First Dragon Age 3 screenshot revealed

The first screenshot of Dragon Age 3: Inquisition was revealed yesterday during a talk held by BioWare art and animation director Neil Thompson during the Bradford Animation Festival, Eurogamer reports. The image was only shown briefly to demonstrate the evolution of game art stemming from retro title Space Invaders to Mass Effect 3, then finally the upcoming installment of Dragon Age. It was photographed by one attendee and posted on the official BioWare forum. "That is Dragon Age: Inquisition," said Thompson. "It's the first time anyone has seen a frame of it outside BioWare studios." Thompson described the affect of the Frostbite 2.0 engine on the design of the upcoming title, acknowledging that Eclipse โ€” the earlier proprietary engine used in the development of Dragon Age 2 โ€”...
