Dust 514 to receive skill and item system upgrade on May 6

CCP's first-person shooter Dust 514 will receive a skill and item system upgrade on May 6 in the upcoming Uprising build, according to a post on the official PlayStation blog by creative director Atli Már Sveinsson. "We realized that trying to map the new skills, bonuses and requirements to your existing items was not only complicated on the technical side, but also likely unfair to you," Sveinsson wrote. "You may have committed to a certain play style, and with an overhauled layout and collection of skills, you may find yourself regretting some of your prior choices." Once the Uprising build is released on May 6, players' characters will be reimbursed all skill points earned to date for redistribution for current skills and "the refund value of ISK and AUR items will be based on the...

Eve Online, Dust 514 universe more a webservice than a game, says technical producer

CCP Games' MMO Eve Online and first-person shooter Dust 514 are part of an ever-evolving universe that is more of a webservice masquerading as a game than a closed computer game, according to CCP Games senior technical producer Andie Nordgren. Speaking during a panel during GDC 2013, Nordgren said she was drawn to work on Eve because to her it was a "webservice that thought it was a computer game." "The game universe is not just storing your play session in the cloud, it means we're giving you a universe where you can have your own experience and other players will have an experience that changes based on what you do," she said of the shared world of Eve Online and Dust 514. "This is always going to be one single-shard world that we keep evolving." Nordgren said it's been a...

Dust 514 narrative and beta structure designed to encourage player-driven stories

The saga of CCP Games' Dust 514, the PlayStation 3 first-person shooter component to the Eve Online universe, will continue with the release of its latest build in May, Uprising. Uprising will launch just one month before the Odyssey expansion for Eve, which is designed to encourage players to once again explore the Eve universe. The release of Uprising alongside the expansion will be "that first step to real persistence and real meaning in Dust 514," according to vice president of business development Thor Gunnarsson. Gunnarsson told Polygon that the ability to conquer planets, which will be added with Uprising, has been one of the most requested feature from players. "This notion of introducing tactical and strategic gameplay, laying that over the core shooter experience of Dust,...

Dust 514 integration with Eve Online continues with live combat event this Friday

CCP Games will hold a live event this Friday that will further integrate Dust 514 into the universe of MMORPG Eve Online, the developer announced in a post to the game's community page. The Battle of Cadari Prime will take place sometime tomorrow morning ET, and has been designed to demonstrate the depth of integration between the two titles, according to CCP. Up until this point, the developer has hosted in-game events bringing the two games in closer contact, but Caldari Prime will "kick off" what the developer hints will be a massive battle. Players will lock arms on the planet Caldari Prime, where skirmishes have been taking place over the past few days. In-game law enforcement and players will go head to head on the planet's surface and the surrounding space. Speaking with M...

Dust 514 getting Eve Online-style council to represent players' interests

Dust 514, the MMO shooter tie-in for Eve Online on PlayStation 3, will have a group that speaks on behalf of the game's player base similarly to Eve Online, according to a forum post from developer CCP Games. Eve Online players are represented by the Council for Stellar Management, a body of player-elected representatives who speak to CCP on behalf of the MMO's user base. According to developer CCP Dolan, the studio was "looking into creating a similar group for Dust 514," and decided to make it a player-run organization. CCP is now soliciting suggestions from the Dust 514 community for a group it is tentatively calling the "War Council." "This appointed council will work closely with us in establishing a voting system, working with teams regarding upcoming features, and generally...

Dust 514 will allow players to conquer and control planets later this year

An update scheduled to release later this year for MMOFPS Dust 514 will allow players to conquer and colonize other planets, utilizing them to amass funds for corporations and as pawns in enemy skirmishes, according to a recent update to the game's blog. According to a post from engineer "Nullabor," developer CCP Games has redesigned and optimized the game's starmap for play using the PlayStation 3 controller. This upgraded map displays trade routes and interplanetary conflict in greater detail, as well as a new asset management interface. Players will engage in battle with rival corporations and set up industrial zones for their own on conquered planets, each offering between five and 24 different districts. Players in low-security regions can purchase clones, the "primary wartime...
