Few video games revel in their own cheapness, but Earth Defense Force pulls it off Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable plays like a rough draft. It has a comically absurd number of glitches. Ants jitter like wind-up toys. Robots contort like the evil children in Korean horror films. Destroyed buildings disappear before they've fully collapsed. Bugs (both the insects and the coding errors) are a key part of Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable. Counter to common sense, they regularly improve the experience. When a gargantuan spider clips through an office complex or a colossal robot ricochets down an avenue, it's hard not to laugh. Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable, the PlayStation Vita port of the 2007 Xbox 360 third-person alien bug shooter, is headed to PlayStation Vita on Jan. 8, 2013, according to a press release from D3 Publisher. The game will come to the PlayStation Store as a digital download a month earlier than its previously reported February launch. The remastered port includes seven new levels and a new multiplayer mode that supports up to four player online co-op. The Sandlot-developed Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable will retail for $39.99. A sequel, EDF 2025 (known in Japan as Earth Defense Force 4) is headed to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2013. You can check out our hands-on with the sequel from the Tokyo Game Show here.

The giant bug-slaying, fire-and-forget fun of the Earth Defense Force series is coming to the PlayStation Vita in North America this winter, according to D3Publisher. The portable port of Earth Defense Force 2017, originally released on Xbox 360 in 2007, will bring with it new features on its journey to Sony's portable game machine. Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable adds cooperative online play for up to four players — with online chat — and an online player-versus-player mode to complement the single-player alien shooting gallery action. Players will also be able to control Pale Wing, the flying female EDF soldier who appears in Earth Defense Force 2 and the upcoming Earth Defense Force 4.
