"We don't create our games in a vacuum," C.J. Kershner, one of the script writers for the game, told me at a recent PlayStation event. "We were aware of the discussions happening about Far Cry 3. People identified some problems." What sort of impact did that have on Far Cry 4, I asked. "Our protagonist is not the white savior, not the dudebro," Kershner said. "He's not coming back to his hometown to help. "Your basic objective is to fulfill your mother's last wishes, to scatter her ashes in her home country." And that was one of the things that interested Kershner in the game. "The thing that drew me most to the project was that the basic objective was human, very relatable," he said. "That feeling was sort of driven home during the game's production when my father died. So I had a...

They don’t swell up or wear a cast or waste away, evoking the sympathy and understanding of those around them. They sit at their cubicles or their home office desks or behind their bathroom mirrors and often suffer in silence. The discussion surrounding mental health can also be invisible. It’s one of the least-understood public health concerns, despite how common mental health problems can be in the population. This lack of open conversation creates an atmosphere in which mental health issues and the people who live with them are stigmatized and made to feel like outsiders, unable to address their concerns with family, friends and coworkers for fear of being ostracized or misunderstood. Where video games fit in Representation is the key to kickstarting discussion, and video games...

Painterly platformer Child of Light has a new trailer, showing off its whimsical and poetic story. Set to launch on April 30 for all major consoles and Windows PC, the much-fancied Ubisoft Montreal game features a Victorian lass who finds herself in a mystical world of beauty and danger. The new trailer shows some of the game's cooperative mechanics and its fairytale world. Last year, project lead Patrick Plourde told Polygon the game is inspired by the golden age of children's illustrated stories and is aiming for a more "feminine" feel than his previous work, which includes Far Cry 3.

The introduction of gay protagonists in AAA video games won't be "for a while," according to Ubisoft Montreal lead writer Lucien Soulban in an interview posted on the official Ubisoft blog. Soulban, whose work includes scripting Far Cry 3, notes that while game franchises like Mass Effect and Fable offer users the option to seek out relationships with the same sex, the current sales and marketing systems are the primary barrier to entry for the creation of gay protagonists in large-scale games. "...when are we going to see that gay protagonist in a AAA game?" asked Soulban in response to a question posted on the website. "Not for a while, I suspect, because of fears that it'll impact sales. "So either we'll see a bait-and-switch like the original Metroid with Samus Aran where we'll...

Ubisoft reported a year-over-year decline in earnings for the third quarter of its 2013-14 fiscal year today, and blamed the "console transition" for the drop. The French publisher recorded sales of €520 million ($709.34 million) for the quarter ending Dec. 31, 2013, a decrease of 35.2 percent from the same period one year prior. Sales for the first nine months of the 2013-14 fiscal year were also down significantly, by 24.8 percent from revenue of €1.08 billion (April-December 2012) to €813 million (April-December 2013). The third-quarter sales came in right in the middle of Ubisoft's guidance for the quarter of between €500 million and €540 million. "Over the short term, the high quality of our titles — which is unanimously recognized by gamers — has enabled us to achieve our...

Voice Actor Elias Toufexis, known best for his role as Deux Ex: Human Revolution lead Adam Jensen, was fired from the starring role in Far Cry 3 as Ubisoft worried gamers would confuse both protagonists, Toufexis said during the MCM Comic Con in London. Toufexis worked on Far Cry 3 for two years while recording the voice of Jason Brody until the 2011 release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution when Ubisoft feared the voices between characters were too similar. According to Toufexis, the distinctive nature of his voice has "lost me jobs." "In fact, I shouldn't say this, but there's a game called Far Cry 3, which I'm sure you guys know, where I had played Jason Brody," said Toufexis. "I played him for two years, did the voice and when Deus Ex came out they replaced me because they were...
