Fez developer Polytron hacked in ongoing game developer harassment effort

An unidentified hacker took control of Fez developer Polytron's website and Twitter account early Friday morning, part of an apparent attack on the Montreal-based studio and other video game developers. Polytron founder and Fez designer Phil Fish said on Twitter early this morning that his company's website and Twitter account were hacked, and that he had been "doxed," having personal information like email accounts, passwords, banking information and other records exposed publicly. According to former Polytron programmer Renaud Bédard, the developer's corporate Dropbox account was compromised, leading to the dissemination of private information. The Polytron website is currently in maintenance mode and the developer's Twitter account has been suspended. Depression Quest developer...

PlayStation Plus free games for August include Fez and Crysis 3 (update)

Fez and Crysis 3 lead the lineup of six games that will be available free to PlayStation Plus subscribers in August, Sony announced today. Polytron's Fez (screenshot above) will be free on PlayStation 4 along with Road Not Taken, the upcoming puzzle roguelike from Spry Fox. PlayStation 3 owners will be able to pick up Crysis 3 from Crytek and Proteus from David Kanaga, Ed Key and porting house Curve Studios. Vanillaware's Dragon's Crown and Digital Dreams' Metrico will be the two free titles on PlayStation Vita. Sony, in accordance with its recently overhauled strategy for its PlayStation Plus release schedule, will make all six aforementioned games free on the first Tuesday of the month, Aug. 5. That happens to be the release date for two of the titles in question, Metrico and Road...

Girls-only game dev camp going global with support from publishers

That's when she got distracted. Quite unexpectedly, Shabir realized that helping young girls learn to make their own games was more important. So she put her own company's game aside in order to help Girls Make Games become a reality. Learn District is Shabir's indie educational game studio. Its game, Penguemic, is a quirky vocabulary-builder that raised just over $50,000. It was on its way to a scheduled June release when, around April of this year, Shabir wanted to hire a developer to begin working on the team's next title. "I really wanted it to be a girl," Shabir says, "because currently the industry is something like 80/20 [men to women]. We spent months trying to find that person and it was impossible." "It was supposed to be a small workshop in our backyard." The problem was...

Indie studio Polytron resurfaces with Polytron Partners

Polytron, the studio best known for the indie games hit Fez, is launching a venture it calls Polytron Partners, designed to partner with other indie games and help bring them to market. Polytron Partners does not consider itself a publisher, according to Polytron founder Phil Fish, even if it serves a similar role. It will assist in the production and promotion of games, beginning with Panoramical, by Fernando Ramallo and David Kanaga. "When I heard the game could use some help to ship, I offered to pitch in," Fish wrote. "Marie-Christine, our producer, could help organize the game's final stretch of development, and I could make sure people heard about it," he elaborated. "And so, we decided to team up to try and make Panoramical the best damned analog musical landscape anthology it...

Fez hits PS3, PS4 and Vita March 25

Fez, developer Polytron's depth-defying platformer, will be released March 25 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, producer Marie-Christine Bourdua revealed this morning on the PlayStation Blog. The game will arrive on PlayStation devices as a collaboration between Bilt Software, Polytron and Sony and support cross saves across all three systems. On PS3, Fez will run at 720p at 60 frames per second, and the game will run on PS Vita at its native resolution of 960 x 544. On PS4, will offer what Bourdua considers "the best-looking and smoothest Fez experience you can get on a TV set" at 1080p at 60 fps. Bourdua also revealed a few other features headed to the PlayStation versions of the game. "No one's going to blame you for digging around, but you won't find many...

Polytron shares clip of Fez running on Vita

Fez developer Polytron shared a Vine clip of the puzzle platformer running on a PlayStation Vita in a tweet yesterday. "Oh, hey, what do we have here?" reads the text accompanying a brief video of a Vita showing one of the levels in Fez. While there is no on-screen movement and playable character Gomez remains still, the clip plays sound and shows the game is in running form. During Sony's Gamescom keynote in August, Fez was announced for release on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and Vita. No launch date has been confirmed. Earlier this year, Fez creator Phil Fish announced that a sequel to the platformer was currently in development. After an online altercation with a writer following Microsoft's announcement of its self-publishing policy reversal, Fish tweeted that Fez 2 was canceled...

PlayStation Vita is ready for a renaissance

At its Gamescom conference yesterday, Sony introduced a significant price cut to both its models of PS Vita and showed off the machine's Remote Play feature with a PlayStation 4 demo of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. Perhaps just as significant was the shotgun blast of indie games announced for the handheld, as well as the appearance of a series of respected independent developers who were willing to wax effusive about the machine, despite its difficult first 18 months on the market. Tellingly, Sony won't release sales numbers of PS Vita, though there's no doubt that it falls into the "niche" category, a long way away from its maker's mass-market aspirations. But the machine is adding to its list of benefits, seeking to emulate the success of its predecessor, the PSP. Despite strong...

Polytron producer 'kind of in shock' at Fez 2 cancellation

When Polytron co-founder Phil Fish canceled Fez 2 and quit the industry this past weekend, the announcement surprised Marie-Christine Bourdua, a producer at the studio, just as much as everyone else, reports Joystiq. Bourdua, who said she wasn't in Montreal — the home of Polytron — when Fish made the announcement on Twitter, was "kind of in shock about [Fez 2] over the weekend," she told Joystiq at Torontaru July, a new meetup in Toronto for game developers and fans. "But it's OK," she added. "It was weird and special to learn it that way, but I respect and trust Phil a lot, so that's totally fair that he decided that and he has his reasons." Renaud Bédard, who served as the programmer on Fez and left the studio for Capybara Games last November, said he and Bordua "learnt [about the F...

A developer's guide to surviving fame, trolls and themselves

"What's this all about?" asked the woman behind the checkout, curious about the exchange. "This guy's famous," said the dude, explaining that McMillen had been featured in a hit documentary about game developers. "Yeah," replied McMillen, somewhat embarrassed. "I'm Lord of the Nerds." Last weekend's Phil Fish episode, in which the Fez developer argued on Twitter with video presenter Marcus Beer and then furiously quit game development, has spent these few days of news-cycle intensity being portrayed as yet another example of online rage, trolls and baiting. But after talking to developers behind games such as God of War, The Binding of Isaac, DayZ, Duke Nukem, Depression Quest and World of Goo, it's clear that this is also a story about people who have found public recognition...
