EA looks back on five years of the FIFA Ultimate Team juggernaut

Five years ago today, Electronic Arts introduced the Ultimate Team mode in its main FIFA franchise. The mode offered a new, engrossing way to play the beloved soccer game, but it ended up being much more than that. FIFA Ultimate Team catapulted the series into new levels of global popularity, and heralded a new paradigm in game development just as the industry was shifting into a digital future. On the eve of Ultimate Team's fifth anniversary, we spoke with two individuals from developer EA Canada who have shepherded the mode along and helped turn it into the massive success it is today: Matt Prior, the producer who first brought Ultimate Team into FIFA with FIFA 09, and Adam Shaikh, current creative director for the mode. Ultimate Team actually originated outside the FIFA series: It...

FIFA 14 on PlayStation Vita may be another roster update (update)

Electronic Arts will release a PlayStation Vita version of FIFA 14, but executive producer David Rutter suggested in an interview with Eurogamer that just like FIFA 13 on PS Vita last year, it will be another mere roster update. FIFA 14 will be the third PS Vita game in the series. Sony launched the handheld in North America in February 2012, and EA's FIFA Soccer (screenshot above) was part of the launch lineup. However, even then, the PS Vita version lagged behind the main console versions — EA had released FIFA 12 on consoles and Windows PC in fall 2011, but FIFA Soccer was based on 2010's FIFA 11. Last fall, EA released a PS Vita version of FIFA 13, but it turned out that the company hadn't made any perceptible improvements over FIFA Soccer — instead, the games were nearly...

MLG Pro Points system ranks players, will determine seeding

Major League Gaming's new Pro Points system will track players' participation and performance for eSports competitions across a wide variety of games, the company announced today. The Pro Points setup will rank top players across different arenas and tiers, depending on the game in question. MLG will award points in Pro Circuit events, online tournaments and online ladders. Pro Points will be used to signify the top 2 percent of players in a particular MLG arena — no more than 100 players per arena — as MLG Pro Players. And MLG will eventually use Pro Point rankings to seed all competitions, including online tournaments; the first seeding based on Pro Points will come at the Pro Championship set for Nov. 22-24 in Columbus, Ohio. Pro Points is currently in beta; the first...

EA digital revenue up, packaged revenue down

Electronic Arts reported financial results today for the fiscal quarter ending June 30, 2013, showing an increase in digital net revenue and a decrease in packaged goods compared to the same quarter last year. GAAP digital net revenue was $482 million, compared to $342 million in Q1 2013, while revenue for publishing packaged goods and other net revenue was $452 million, down from $592 million in Q1 2013. Total net revenue was $949 million, compared to $955 million in Q1 2013. EA singled out several games that performed well during the quarter, including The Simpsons: Tapped Out, which recorded its highest revenue in a quarter since its launch last year. Digital net revenue for FIFA 13 was more than $70 million (non-GAAP) in Q1 2014, which represents a 92 percent increase versus F...

FIFA 13 players can send an MLS athlete to the All-Star Game

FIFA 13 users will be able to vote a Major League Soccer player into the last open spot on the 2013 All-Star team by scoring goals with MLS players in the video game, publisher Electronic Arts announced today. EA and MLS provided a list of 26 MLS candidates for the final spot, all forwards; you can see the full list below. From noon ET today, July 3, through noon ET July 10, any goals scored with one of those players in any game mode of FIFA 13 will count as a vote for that player. This applies for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC versions of the game. MLS fans were able to vote for 10 of the 11 All-Star starters through the league's website, text messages and Twitter, which is nothing unprecedented for sports — Major League Baseball has held All-Star fan voting online for...

EA is developing Wii U games, has bigger plans for PS4 and Xbox One, CFO says

Electronic Arts is developing games for the Wii U, but not as many as the company is developing for Sony and Microsoft's consoles, EA's chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen said today during the Stifel Nicolaus 2013 Internet, Media and Communications Conference. Jorgensen's statement seems to contradict a statement last week from EA spokesman Jeff Brown, who said last week that the company has "no games in development for the Wii U currently." When asked by a conference attendee which console manufacturer would lead the next generation, Jorgensen said that consumers, not publishers, would be the ones to decide. "You know, I think Nintendo's business was more [an] extension of their last console," Jorgensen said today. "We are building titles for the Nintendo console, but not...

FIFA 14 not coming to Wii U because of predecessor's disappointing 'commercial results'

FIFA 14, this year's installment of Electronic Arts' soccer franchise, will not be released for Wii U because sales of FIFA 13 were "disappointing," a representative from EA told Eurogamer. "Six months ago FIFA 13 was a launch title on Wii U," the representative said. "Although the game featured FIFA's award-winning HD gameplay and innovative new ways to play, the commercial results were disappointing. We have decided not to develop FIFA 14 on Wii U." EA published several games for Wii U after its launch last November, including FIFA 13 and Madden NFL 13. Earlier this month, EA confirmed that Madden NFL 25 would not launch on the system, but said that the company has "a strong partnership with Nintendo." The news follows in the wake of EA spokesperson Jeff Brown's recent statement...

EA has 'no games in development for the Wii U,' spokesman says

Electronic Arts isn't currently developing any games for the Wii U, EA spokesperson Jeff Brown told Kotaku. EA published several games for Nintendo's console since its November 2012 launch, including FIFA 13, Madden NFL 13, Mass Effect 3: Special Edition and Need for Speed Most Wanted, but its studios have nothing in the pipeline right now. "We have no games in development for the Wii U currently," Brown said, but he didn't rule out future Wii U development, according to Kotaku. Earlier this month, EA announced that Madden NFL 25 would not make its way to the Wii U in 2013, while reiterating that the company has "a strong partnership with Nintendo." EA DICE's technical director Johan Andersson recently explained that the Frostbite engine, which powers games like those in the...

EA Sports extends FIFA license until 2022

EA Sports and international soccer association FIFA announced today an extension to their current video game licensing agreement, which will now extend until Dec. 31, 2022. Under this agreement, EA Sports retains exclusive rights to the development of FIFA-branded titles, while still maintaining the status of "presenting partner" of the FIFA Interactive World Cup. This extension follows last month's news of a continuation of the franchise with FIFA 14, scheduled to release this fall to Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3. The series' last installment, FIFA 13, received a 9 out of 10 from Polygon in a review that states: "The infusion of real-life soccer developments throughout the game makes the experience come alive; you feel like you're part of a vibrant, passionate community of soccer...

EA reports income drop for fourth fiscal quarter but jump for the year

Electronic Arts reported its fourth-quarter and full-year financial results today, showing a 19 percent drop in net income for the fourth fiscal quarter, but a 28.9 percent jump in net income for its 2013 fiscal year. The earnings report covers EA's fourth quarter — the three-month period that ended March 31 — as well as its entire 2013 fiscal year, which ran from April 1, 2012, through March 31, 2013. EA's net revenue was down in both the fourth quarter (by 11.6 percent, from $1.37 billion to $1.21 billion) and the full year (by 8.4 percent, from $4.14 billion to $3.80 billion). But net income for the full year was up 28.9 percent, from $76 million for 2012 to $98 million for 2013. The increase appears to have resulted in large part from a rise in digital revenue, and from the...
