Bravely Default outshines modern Final Fantasy titles by selling one million units

Nintendo 3DS role-playing game Bravely Default has sold one million copies worldwide, placing it ahead of most recent titles in Square Enix's long-lived Final Fantasy RPG series, Dengeki Online reports. Bravely Default launched in Japan in 2012, in December 2013 in Europe and in North America this past February. The game's lifetime sales, including downloads, exceed one million copies — 400,000 copies in Japan and 600,000 copies overseas, Square Enix told Dengeki. While the game is not a true Final Fantasy title, the game does borrow many elements of the 27-year-old JRPG franchise: a focus on narrative and character development, different job classes players can develop — such as mages, warriors and thieves — and a storyline focused around crystals that protect and power the earth. MMOs are at their best when they're not cloning World of Warcraft

MMOs continue to be released every year with gameplay built primarily around aping World of Warcraft's approachable style. Tens of million of people have already devoted hundreds of hours to Blizzard's behemoth. That has to be a majority of the total audience for the massively multiplayer genre, and they've already experienced the pinnacle of that style of gameplay and know that they can return to it for ten year's worth of expansion and patch content at any time. I've been playing two massively multiplayer role-playing games that draw a lot from the World of Warcraft model: Wildstar and Final Fantasy 14. I like both of these games. In fact, Final Fantasy 14 is one of my favorite MMOs ever. But the more time I spend with both of these and the many other MMOs I've played over the last...

Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn trailer reveals patch 2.3, 'Defenders of Eorzea'

Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn is expanding again, and a video released today puts the upcoming patch 2.3 Defenders of Eorzea in motion. Press play above to see the expansion's battlegrounds, including the Borderland Ruins of Carteneau Flats, as well as quests like The Hunt and much more. You can browse Defenders of Eorzea in still form through the gallery below. Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn director Naoki Yoshida told Polygon at E3 2014 that patch 2.3 will also bring large-scale player-versus-player to the game. The MMO's next major expansion — 3.0 — will be detailed at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festivals this fall. For more on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC game, be sure to read Polygon's review.

Final Fantasy 14's first expansion pack will be revealed in October

In an interview with Yoshida during E3, he told Polygon that the game's first expansion — what the team is referring to as "version 3.0" of the game — will be revealed at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival. Multiple Fan Festivals will be held throughout October and November in Las Vegas, London and Tokyo. "We want the fans to know it first," Yoshida said. "They've been the ones supporting us." But the wait for an expansion pack doesn't mean waiting for content. Yoshida assured us that Square Enix has a lot of things planned as additions to the game in its series of 2.x patches. As an example, patch 2.3 is on the way next month. This will bring large-scale player-versus-player to the world in the "Frontlines" system — a much bigger PvP battlefield than the current 4v4 Wolves' Den. On...

Final Fantasy 14 is finally getting same-sex marriage

Final Fantasy 14 developer Square Enix is at long last bringing same-sex marriage to the massively multiplayer game, two years after first confirming it was under consideration. Director and producer Naoki Yoshida confirmed the new addition during a live streamed E3 developer talk, stating same-sex relationships will become available in the next patch. Speaking via translator, Yoshida said: "People within Eorzea will be able to pledge their eternal love and or friendship in a ceremony of eternal bonding. And this will be open to people regardless of race, creed, and gender. Two players...if they want to be together, in Eorzea, they can-through this eternal bonding ceremony." "We discussed it," he added, "and we realized: within Eorzea, why should there be restrictions on who pledges...

Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, Thief, Final Fantasy 10/10-2 HD Remaster boosts Square Enix forecast

Square Enix adjusted its projected financial results for the year ending March 31, 2014 with net sales and operating income expected to exceed its forecast largely that it largely attributes to strong sales of Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn. Projected financial results for the year ending March 31, 2014 from expected net sales of 140 billion ($1.37 billion) to 155 billion yen ($1.52 billion). The operating income, ordinary income and net income are also expected to exceed the range of the consolidated results forecast. According to the notice of adjustment of consolidated results, company reports encouraging sales of Japan-exclusive Dragon Quest Monsters Super Light released in January 2014, and "favorable sales" of Thief, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster and Tomb Raider Definitive...

Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn review update: PlayStation 4

I praised the PC launch of Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn for playing so well with controllers — something no other MMO of this level of complexity had ever really accomplished. Now with the PlayStation 4 version of the game cleaning up some of the minor leftover issues that plagued the PS3 release, I can safely say that the console experience in Final Fantasy 14 is almost identical to what's available on PC. While the PlayStation 3 version of Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn was playable, it suffered from downgraded visuals, sluggish load times and a framerate that dropped whenever the action on-screen got busy. Each one of these issues is nonexistent on PlayStation 4. The game looks on par with the highest visual settings on PC, areas load fast, and the framerate barely took a hit...
