Final Fantasy 6 only took over one year to complete

Development of Final Fantasy 6 took just over one year, immediately following the release of Final Fantasy 5, game director Yoshinori Kitane told Edge. But even in that short development period, the game changed compared to what was initially planned. According to Kitane, Final Fantasy 6 was originally intended to let every character take on a leading role. Designers including series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and graphic designer Soraya Saga all had input on the large cast of characters. The creation of multiple lead characters whose stories players would switch between proved difficult. According to Kitase: "Maintaining a careful equilibrium between all the characters was probably the greatest challenge I faced. "However, I ended up so involved with each personality while scripting...

Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn trailer introduces Final Fantasy 6's classic Magitek Armor

A new trailer for Square Enix's relaunched MMO Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn recreates an iconic scene from an older game in the series. The trailer features a character who heavily resembles Final Fantasy 6 protagonist Terra riding one of the game's steampunk-esque Magitek Armor machines through a snowfield. Set to a remix of "Terra's Theme" from the same game, it's highly evocative of Final Fantasy 6's opening title crawl. Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn is an overhauled version of the original Final Fantasy 14, which received widespread backlash and negative criticism upon release. It's scheduled for release later this year on Windows PC and PlayStation 3.

Square Enix teases possible Final Fantasy 6 remake or port

Square Enix launched a site recently that teases the possibility of a Final Fantasy 6 remake or port. The website contains no details or description of the project and only displays what appears to be a date (1.17) and silhouettes of behemoths from Final Fantasy 6. The website's URL also contains the letters "ff_atb". ATB could potentially refer to "All The Bravest", which is the name of a domain Square Enix trademarked in 2012. ATB also stands for Active Time Battle in Final Fantasy terms and was a battle system that debuted in Final Fantasy 4 and was used in some form in subsequent Final Fantasy games. Judging by the teaser website, more information is expected to be available Jan. 17.
