Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2 review: same old song

many scenarios, characters and locations are rehashed from the previous game Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2 tells a Reader's Digest version of the original comic's story. After the world has ended, Kenshiro — classic loner, legendary martial artist and all-around good guy — wanders the wasteland helping the helpless. Plot is passed on through comic book-like panels with Japanese narration over English subtitles. Fist of the North Star's mythology may be deep, but it blurs together when edited into bite-sized chunks. Over and over again, a powerless kid or senior citizen is bullied by a group of idiotic punks. Ken arrives with his Hokuto Shinken martial arts skills and demolishes hundreds of imbeciles on his way to a boss, each of which spews indistinguishable...

Japan Review Check: Fist of the North Star, PlayStation All-Stars

Here's a quick summary of the console titles coming out next week in Japan, courtesy of the review pages of Famitsu magazine. Famitsu reviewers are known for generally awarding the same scores for games released across multiple platforms. However, for whatever reason, this isn't happening with Wii U third-party releases. Batman: Arkham City, Assassin's Creed III, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Ninja Gaiden 3 are among the Wii U games that scored one or two points below the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions in Famitsu's review pages - a fact that definitely hasn't gone unnoticed among gamers in Japan. The trend continued this week with the Wii U port of Shin Hokuto Musou, sequel to the game titled Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage in the U.S. The review text was generally positive: "The...

Upcoming action title Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2 will now be released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in Europe on Feb. 8, a one week delay from its original release date of Feb. 1, Tecmo Koei Europe announced today. Ken's Rage 2 will also get a downloadable-only Wii U version on the previous day, Feb. 7. The game follows the plot of the entire original manga, produced in the 1980s with writing by Japanese mangaka Buronson and illustrator Tetsuo Hara. The manga's 245 chapters were serialized from 1983 to 1988 in Japanese comic publication Weekly Shōnen Jump. The game also features a new Legend mode that begins with a re-imagining of one of the game's episodes, "Raoh," and covers two additional episodes, "Celestial Emperor" and "Land of Shura." Players can control different...

Japan Review Check: Fist of the North Star, Black Ops 2

Here is a recap of the most interesting games coming out soon in Japan, courtesy of the reviews section in the latest issue of Famitsu magazine. There are still no sign of Famitsu's reviews of Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U, oddly enough. However, they did review a couple new Wii U titles, including The Family Party, the Japanese version of D3 Publisher's budget title Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade. The result: Not exactly stellar. The game earned scores of 6, 6, 5, and 4 for a total of 21 points out of 40, one of the lowest aggregate scores Famitsu has given out in a while. "All the minigames are rough and you gradually get more and more frustrated as you play them," one editor wrote. "It feels like they were forcing themselves to use the Wii U GamePad here,...

'Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2' delivers faster kicks, all-too-familiar punch

There's an understandable sense of sameness when it comes to Tecmo Koei's musou series of action games (Dynasty Warriors, Warriors Orochi, et al.). To the outside observer, these are video games that appeal to mostly Japanese players, typically historical fiction beat 'em ups involving dozens of playable characters slaying screenfuls of hack and slash fodder. That sameness is more apparent in musou-style game Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2, based on the postapocalyptic martial arts manga that ran weekly in Japan during the mid 1980s. The "2" in the game's title may be somewhat misleading, as the new game covers a good deal of territory featured in the original Ken's Rage. (In Japan, the game is known as Shin Hokuto Musou, more along the lines of New Fist of the North Star, which...
