FTL: Faster Than Light review: death at warp speed

It's impossible to talk about FTL without mentioning how much it relishes killing you. But dodging barrages of enemy missiles in your little space cruiser isn't the most difficult thing about the game. The real challenge is convincing anyone who hasn't played FTL that it's one of the most thrilling, compulsively playable games of the year. "Well, see, it's a spaceship resource management strategy sim roguelike with - ... Hey, where are you going?" Trust me, very few of those sub-genres pique my interest on the surface. I'd imagine you're a little like me, otherwise you'd already be playingFTL rather than indulging me as I try to sell you on it. FTL LOVES NOTHING MORE THAN TO BRING EVERYTHING CRASHING DOWN AROUND YOU What FTL does so brilliantly is make all its complex...

FTL: Advanced Edition - Overview video

Sure, it may seem like its randomly-generated space calamities are punishing, its miserly distribution of wealth unwelcoming, its frequent full-crew eviscerations disastrous. Despite all that, us true space pioneers know that stuff is a cakewalk. A breeze! Fortunately, the game's Advanced Edition content can finally provide some challenge with oxygen-draining deckhands, a harder difficulty setting, and also, this game was made by the devil. In today's Overview, Russ Frushtick and I explore the vacuous wilds of space to learn about FTL: Advanced Edition's new content, which ultimately results in us discovering new and exciting ways to be set on fire.

FTL: Faster Than Light's free expansion and iPad port both coming April 3

The iPad port of FTL: Faster Than Light and the game's free expansion, FTL: Advanced Edition, will both be available April 3, developer Subset Games announced today. Subset originally announced plans for the Advanced Edition and the iPad version last November. FTL was originally released on Linux, Mac and Windows in September 2012. The Advanced Edition will be released as a free update to the existing game for everybody who already owns it or ever will own it, regardless of platform or the online store where it was purchased. The expansion introduces new systems and subsystems such as Clone Bay, Hacking and Mind Control; a tougher difficulty level, Hard Mode; and other changes like minor visual improvements. FTL on iPad will run on iPad 2 and newer, and will cost $9.99 — the same...

Watch FTL: Advanced Edition, direct from GDC

They showed us a run-through of FTL: Advanced Edition, and also talked about the upcoming iPad release. Both the update and iPad version, they say, will release at the same time. It's funny returning to a game like FTL that had consumed my life. I know that if I play it again, it will be the game I play, not a game I play. And you know what, I think I'm okay with one more trip through the galaxy.

FTL: Advanced Edition's Clone Bay, hacking system detailed

Subset Games' free expansion for FTL: Faster Light, FTL: Advanced Edition, will feature new systems and subsystems such as the Clone Bay, hacking and mind control, the developer announced via the game's official website. FTL: Advanced Edition, announced alongside the iPad port of full game, will include only eight systems installed on one ship at a time. According to a post from Justin Ma, this requires players to prioritize which systems will "work the best for your current strategy." One of the game's new systems, the Clone Bay, acts an alternative to the MedBay by allowing players to replace a dead crew member without losing some skills. "The goal of the Clone Bay was to really disrupt the core way you play the game," Ma wrote. "You'll be able to send crew off into dangerous...

FTL: Faster than Light, the punishing indie spacefaring roguelike from Subset Games, will receive a slate of new features as part of a free expansion that will launch early next year, alongside a much-anticipated iPad port. The expansion, FTL: Advanced Edition, will add "new weapons, drones, augments, systems, enemies, and more," according to the game's official site. Specific additions include a new mind control ability, which allows you to temporarily turn your enemies against each other, and a hacking system that lets you sabotage enemy ship components; for example, you can make an enemy med bay harm its inhabitants, rather than heal them. The update will also add a new space sector for players to explore, featuring a new storyline penned by returning writer Tom Jubert and guest...
