Half-Life 2 looks great in Unreal Engine 3

If we're not getting Half-Life 3 anytime soon, get ready to see Half-Life 2 in more detail than ever before. Artist Logithx posted these three shots to the Polycount forums on Tuesday, showing City 17 from Half-Life 2 more lifelike than ever. And these shots were rendered in Unreal Engine 3 — not Unreal 4, which just became available to developers. "I'm working every day to port this to the new Unreal Engine 4 but as I mentioned in my original post there's lots of work that was unfinished," he writes, "not to mention that I have to redo all the materials and many textures because of the awesome physically-based shading in Unreal Engine 4." Logithx promises that "everything was rebuilt from the ground up, including high-poly's and all the stuff that goes with," in these images. No...

Unknown Worlds unleashes Natural Selection source code

The source code for Natural Selection, Unknown Worlds' Half-Life mod, is now free to download from the GitHub website, according an announcement by producer Hugh Jeremy. "You can use the NS source code to make your own version of the original game, fix problems with it, make new problems, or just see how the game worked," Jeremy wrote. "We hope you enjoy tinkering with it. NS was one of the greatest mods of all time — and we can't wait to see what you are able to do with it." He goes on to note that the code is not open source due to legal restrictions. Full details about the Natural Selection and Half Life SDK licenses are available on Natural Selection's GitHub page. The first-person RTS was first publicly released in 2002 and you can view a recent version of Natural...

Faceless rethinks free-to-play decision after Greenlight win

When Half-Life 2 horror mod Faceless was pitched to Greenlight, the game was described as a free-to-play title. But now it's been voted into the hallowed realm of Steam, plans are afoot to give the Slenderman-inspired game a $9.99 price tag. What gives? According to Faceless' creative director Adam Sklar, the suggestion to try to raise revenues from the game came from Valve, followed by a decision by the development team that the money could be used to improve the game. In an interview with Indie Statik he said that the success of other indie games, offered commercially, had prompted the change. Although multiplayer options and bonus content will be part of the $9.99 package, a core part of the game will still be free. "We will be shipping out a free version of Faceless with the Hyde...

Half-Life co-op mod getting standalone release on Steam

Sven Co-Op, a multiplayer mod for the original Half-Life that has been in development for nearly 15 years, will get a standalone Steam release using a customized version of Valve's engine, the dev team announced today. Valve granted the Sven Co-Op dev team access to the GoldSrc engine upon which Half-Life and its expansions were built, allowing them to make changes to improve the game's engine and level editor. The new version of Sven will be completely free, and will include a co-op version of the Half-Life campaign, automatic updates via SteamPipe and improved stability and performance for the aging engine. "We are grateful beyond expression to Valve for their generosity and efforts put forth to make this possible," artist Josh Polito wrote on the Sven Co-Op forums. "We're looking...

Ethereal Entertainment's Faceless postponed

The development of Ethereal Entertainment's Faceless is postponed indefinitely, according to an update by the game's lead promotional designer Adam Sklar on ModDB. "Many of the original developers left this modification due to personal reasons and weariness of the lack of development on the mod," Sklar wrote. "This is highly understandable and these developers are not to blame at all for the original postponement. The mod is still postponed currently. But please don't stop reading. Some of the original developers like myself still remain with the team and are working to get Faceless back into development." Pending the recruitment of new development team members, Faceless will reenter development as a "partial reboot." "Well the story, the style of our Slenderman, will remain the...

Half-Life and Portal movies in early idea stages, J.J. Abrams says

"It's as real as anything in Hollywood ever gets," Abrams said of the just-announced plans to develop movies based on Portal and Half-Life. "Which is that we are really talking to Valve, we are going to be bringing on a writer, we have a lot of very interesting ideas." "And both a Portal and Half-Life movie are things I want to see," Abrams said. "We're also aware of the cautionary tales of movies that became games and vice versa. Our goal here to is to treat the world Valve has created in both these properties like anyone would a book or some great story that comes from a pitch or original script — just to treat it with the respect they treat their games and their players with." Valve co-founder and president Gabe Newell has expressed apprehension in the past about making movies...

Valve releases original Half-Life for Mac and Linux

Valve landmark first-person shooter Half-Life has been ported and quietly released for Mac OS X and Linux. While Valve hasn't made any official announcements about the availability of Half-Life for other platforms and currently lists Windows as the only supported OS, the Mac version appears in our Steam library, installs and runs well. The original Half-Life, first released in 1998, has been one of a handful Valve games that hasn't received a non-Windows port since the developer began pursuing Mac and Linux development. The release of the original Half-Life could pave the way for older Valve-published titles like the original Counter-Strike, Team Fortress Classic and expansions Opposing Force and Blue Shift to come to Mac and Linux. Half-Life is currently priced at $9.99 on Steam. (...
