Halo 2 PC multiplayer support extended through June, 343 investigating 'further support options'

Halo 2's Windows PC multiplayer support will extend through June and Halo 4 developer 343 Industries is investigating "further support options," according to a tweet from David Ellis, a designer at 343. A Halo Waypoint community manager announced last month that the multiplayer servers would be taken down this Friday, Feb. 15. The developer made the decision after months of monitoring, which revealed that player activity peaked "consistently at approximately 20 players or less." The multiplayer component of Halo 2's Xbox counterpart shut down in April 2010. In an interview last November, Xbox co-creator Kevin Bachus credited the company's cooperation with Bungie and Halo 2's launch in 2004 with shaping the future of the Xbox Live service. According to Bachus, their work was...

Microsoft has no plans to release Halo on Steam

Microsoft currently does "not have plans" to release any of the Halo games on Steam, according to an official statement from Microsoft provided to GameSpot. Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2 and Halo 3 were recently discovered in a public version of the Steam Database, suggesting that all three titles might be headed for Steam release. A Steam Community Hub for a Halo 3 was also spotted, but later removed. Of the other games listed, Dyad has since been confirmed for a Steam release. Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 are already available on PC. Halo 3, however, remains an Xbox 360 exclusive.

Halo 2 PC servers shutting down on Feb. 15

The PC servers for Halo 2 will be taken offline on Feb. 15, a Halo Waypoint community manager announced today on the Waypoint blog. The blog post explains that the servers were being taken down due to inactivity from the Halo 2 player base. "We've been monitoring the population for months, and it's been peaking consistently at approximately 20 players or less," the post reads. "Those that own this game can continue to enjoy Multiplayer over LAN after that date; however our network services will be turned off at that time. We love you, Halo 2 PC, and you will live forever in our hearts." The online multiplayer component for the PC version of Halo 2 has long outlived its Xbox counterpart, which was shut down (along with every other Xbox Live-supported title for the original Xbox) in...

Bungie and Halo 2 responsible for evolution of Xbox Live, say Xbox creators

Microsoft's Xbox console was always going to have its Xbox Live service, but convincing third party publishers to add online components and tweak their games for Live compatibility was a challenge, according to Xbox co-creator Kevin Bachus in a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz. "What we did was to go up to publishers and say, 'Listen, we're building Walt Disney World here,'" said Bachus. "'We're taking care of laying the electrical cables and getting the water pipes in place, removing the garbage, that sort of stuff. You're building the rides.'" Publishers were uncomfortable with Microsoft collecting revenue for the subscription that would allow people to play their games online, according to Bachus. Publisher EA stated Microsoft didn't need to know who was playing what EA...

Indie studio Certain Affinity hopes to turn Halo, Call of Duty experience to AAA game development

Certain Affinity, a developer that has helped create content for games like Call of Duty: Black Ops, Left 4 Dead, Halo: Reach and Halo 4, is ready to make its own AAA game as soon as the time is right, president and creative director Max Hoberman told Gamesindustry.biz. Hoberman founded Certain Affinity six years ago after serving as multiplayer lead on Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2, and the company has grown from nine to 75 full-time employees. Having chalked up experience working on others' games, the studio began making its own downloadable titles like the real-time strategy game Age of Booty, and Crimson Alliance, an action role-playing game. "The reality is that we set out to create a company with all the skills and experience to create the next big action franchise,"...

Halo 4's soundtrack is Billboard's highest-charted video game soundtrack ever

Halo 4's official soundtrack, which was released in October, is currently the highest-charting video game soundtrack to ever make it onto the Billboard 200 chart, Billboard announced today. The soundtrack made its debut at number 50 on the Billboard 200 and sold just under 9,000 copies in its first week. Its rank surpasses the soundtrack to Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock – Companion Pack, which peaked at number 107 in 2007. The record for the highest sales week is held by Halo 2, which sold a bit more than 9,000 copies in its second week on the chart in 2004. In the Top Soundtracks category, Billboard reports that Halo 4's soundtrack debuted at number 3. Previous Halo games also did well on the chart, with Halo 2 peaking at number 12 in 2004, Halo 3 getting to number 18 in 2007, H...
