Halo: The Master Chief Collection will keep the games' original multiplayer glitches

Halo: The Master Chief Collection's makers want to remain faithful to the way the four included games — Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4 — played, so they're planning to retain whatever glitches may have appeared in the original multiplayer components of those titles, co-developer 343 Industries said during a panel today at Comic-Con International 2014. "Bluntly, that was a difficult conversation internally, in the first place, because for every person irritated [by a glitch] there are five who love that stuff," O'Connor said. "So education will have to be some of that process." O'Connor was responding to a fan who coyly asked if any infinite ammunition glitches in the original games' multiplayer would be fixed for the re-releases. "Would that be the rocket infinite...

Bungie pays up $95K to the composer behind Halo

Bungie is paying $95,000 to composer Marty O'Donnell following a lawsuit against the company and chief executive Harold Ryan over unpaid benefits after being let go by the company, Venturebeat reports. The settlement includes $38,385 in unpaid work, and this same amount once more in damages. With legal fees and interest this comes to a total of $95,019.13. The suit, filed on May 1, claims that Bungie violated its agreement to pay employees for "unused vacation, paid time off, sabbatical time and other benefits." The document states that there are other, separate grievances against Ryan "that are being pursued in arbitration." A response from Bungie was filed on May 27 denying all allegations. The composer was let go on April 11 "without cause," according to a tweet he posted at the...

Halo 5's secret Spartan is Agent Locke, and his story will be revealed in Halo Nightfall

Halo 5: Guardians' mystery Spartan is Agent Locke, and the solider's story will be told in producer Ridley Scott's episodic series Halo Nightfall. When Microsoft released the first image of Halo 5: Guardians (above), the Spartan with a blue visor appeared as if reflected above Master Chief. Halo: The Master Chief Collection, the four-game bundle of numbered Halo games, will include access to Halo Nightfall. Locke will play "a key role in Halo 5: Guardians," general manager and 343 Industries studio head Bonnie Ross said. "We're using Halo Nightfall to basically tell his backstory and tell his origin story," Ross said during a Halo-themed meeting at E3 2014. "You don't have to watch this, but knowing this will kind of tee you up for all the new things that are going on in H...

Five of the most interesting reveals of the Xbox press conference

Sunset Overdrive The content shown for Sunset Overdrive was incredibly self aware, to the point where the game made fun of a colorless soldier huddled behind a crate during a "realistic" firefight. The game then exploded with color, and showed a game that looks like a combination of Tony Hawk and Dead Rising, which is a sentence I didn’t think I would ever write. The juxtaposition of winking acknowledgment of the absurdity of the game’s premise and the relentless destruction of the mutant characters was a little weird, but the game looks like a welcome relief from the overly serious action titles and scowling men with guns that tend to fill E3. It’s also an Xbox exclusive, which is something Microsoft sorely needs. Cuphead Microsoft showed a montage of indie titles that...

The optimized high-definition compilation includes four games for $59.99: Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4. The package will be all-inclusive, packing in every level, every multiplayer map (more than 100), every gameplay mode and every little bug or quirk as they originally shipped. A PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita bundle: A retail listing recently popped up Amazon France's website for a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita bundle dubbed "the "Ultimate Player Edition." The retailer lists the bundle for €579.99 (about $789). The Last Guardian is still a thing: Hope still burns bright that The Last Guardian might one day see release. Halo: The Master Chief Collection coming to Xbox One this year

Halo: The Master Chief Collection, a bundle featuring remastered versions of the four numbered Halo games, will be released on Xbox One this year, reports Engadget. The package would include 2001's Halo: Combat Evolved, 2004's Halo 2, 2007's Halo 3 and 2012's Halo 4, and would leave out spinoffs such as 2009's Halo 3: ODST and 2010's Halo: Reach, according to Engadget's sources. No developer is known at this point. Saber Interactive and Certain Affinity collaborated on 2011's Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary for the Xbox 360; the original Halo is the only one that has already received a high-definition remaster so far. This morning, current Halo developer 343 Industries announced that the next full entry in the franchise, Halo 5: Guardians, is set for release in fall 2015 on Xbox One....

Master Chief voice actor says Halo 2 anniversary edition coming this year (update)

A Halo 2 anniversary edition will release this year to coincide with the game's tenth anniversary, according to Master Chief voice actor Steve Downes, who added that Halo 5 won't launch until 2015. "I think you may be ahead of yourself on Halo 5," Downes told GameZone, who was unable to share the games' developers or expected platforms. "I wouldn't expect anything until 2015. What you can look forward to this year is an anniversary edition of Halo 2." Microsoft teased the next-gen installment of the Halo franchise during its E3 2103 press conference. Bonnie Ross, general manager of 343 Industries, announced that the title features a 60fps frame rate and takes advantage of Microsoft's cloud computing tech. The game was announced for an Xbox One release in 2014 with Microsoft Game...

Why conserving games is an all-new, important challenge for art museums

In order to adequately conserve video games and their hardware, museums will have to develop an expertise for it that is on par with conserving marble sculptures, according to the Smithsonian American Art Museum's curator of film and media arts, Michael Mansfield. Speaking to NPR, Mansfield said adding video games to a museum collection involves more than just storing the cartridges and hardware in humidity-controlled vaults. They have to be kept in working order so they can be studied and enjoyed in the future, and museums need to develop the know-how to achieve this. "There's the hardware and the software — the console and the code of the game — both are needed to experience the game as it was designed to be experience," Mansfield said. "You really need the architecture of the...
