Hands-on with Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number

The sequel to Dennaton Games' top-down, retro-styled, graphically and narratively brutal action game felt and looked just like its 2012 predecessor. This is a familiar, dire universe. I exited a car, grabbed some weapons from its trunk and entered a building filled with people looking for an excuse to murder me. To be fair, it's a Hotline Miami game, so I had an excuse to murder them, too. I first played Hotline Miami on PC. Truth? I was terrible. I have no reason to believe that it was the game. I've been a controller guy almost all of my life, and I just don't have the mouse and keyboard skills that it requires. It wasn't until I played the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita versions that I was able to live up to the game's demands. I spent some time at PAX East 2014 with Hotline...

The indie games studio is targeting the third quarter of this year for Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, an upcoming sequel to the hyper-violent shooter which is also planned for release on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita, alongside Windows PC and Mac. Hotline Miami live-action short film turns to crowdfunding

Director and writer Saman Kesh has turned to crowdfunding to get his latest project off the ground: a live-action short film based on Dennaton Games' bloody top-down action title Hotline Miami. According to the campaign page, Kesh aims to recreate Hotline Miami's "ferociously energetic gameplay, sexy '80s art direction and amazing soundtrack" into a character-driven period piece inspired by the title. The film won't be a "kitschy '80s flashback" but will seek to replicate and "honor" the passion developer Dennaton Games has shown for its game. The page notes that Dennaton and publisher Devolver Digital are not affiliated with the project in any way, but promises that the film will be "always neon, always stylish." Funding made through Indiegogo will go towards the game's complex art...

Hotline Miami headed to PlayStation 3 and Vita this spring

Hotline Miami is coming to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita this spring, according to a video published today on publisher Devolver Digital's YouTube channel. The developer has been teasing an announcement in recent days, including a picture posted to Yfrog earlier today showing a screenshot that references a start button you wouldn't expect to see on its Windows PC port. Check out the video above to see the console and handheld ports in action. If you haven't waded into Hotline Miami's retro-styled murderous action, be sure to check out our review. Dutch developer Abstraction Games is working on the ports, which will support Sony's Cross Buy program. Announced last August, Cross Buy allows those who purchase a game on one version of Sony's hardware to unlock it for free on the...

Cooperatives: Hotline Miami

The indie game pummels together bits of various genres — strategy, roleplaying, adventure, dual-stick shooters — into one of the most disorienting experiences of last year. It simply doesn't play like anything else. The brain-singeing acid blip soundtrack and the eye-tearing 2D glitch graphics channel bad drug trips and snuff films. The story, which is both humane and meta, reveals itself like a rotten onion, with smelly, awful truth waiting in its core. Which is to say, we like it. In my case, a lot. Where did Hotline Miami rank on your personal end-of-year list? And where would you set the sequel? Let's discuss! For more episodes, visit our Cooperatives page.

L.A. Game Space: a place for growth and discovery

The L.A. Game Space Kickstarter campaign makes a lot of enticing promises. For $15, backers receive 30 original games made by the developers of Hotline Miami, Adventure Time, QWOP, The Unfinished Swan, Nidhogg and more. If backers donate more, they will receive a pixel portrait by the artists who worked on Canabalt, The Hunger Games iOS game, Super TIME Force and Spelunky. But perhaps the biggest promise the campaign is making is the establishment of a creative and nurturing game space in Los Angeles – a place where ideas are cultivated and celebrated. A place where everyone is welcome. L.A. Game Space currently has 30 developers on board with an advisory board that includes the likes of the IGF's Brandon Boyer, Mossmouth's Derek Yu, Funomena's Robin Hunicke and UCSB's Jeremy Douglass....
