Journey review: A capital venture

Wait...Stop...can't breathe...Jerk... That goal should be within reach to anyone who can hold a controller, courtesy ofJourney's design. Controls are limited to movement, jumping and shouting. Shouting emits a long or short pulse from your body, collecting energy needed to navigate the desert's many obstacles. Control is explained with subtle diagrams at the beginning ofJourney, so even controller-confused newcomers should have no trouble navigating its sandy expanses. After that, you're free to wander. Journey's seemingly-endless desert is reminiscent of an open-world game. Journey isn't that. You're subtly guided towards landmarks, often surrounded by open spaces to play around in. You're left to your own pace, though free to collect energy, discover secrets and activate...

Journey, Mega Man and Silent Hill composers join forces on World 1-2 album

World 1-2, an upcoming 20-track album from video game composers of Journey, Mega Man and the Silent Hill series and more, will be released on May 2, the project's organizer Mohammed Taher told the Verge. Taher, a self-described "video game music fanboy from Kuwait," organized the project after asking VVVVVV composer Souleye to write the theme song for Taher's podcast. Souleye agreed, and Taher began reaching out to other video game composers. What began as an idea for a four-track EP grew into an entire album. World 1-2 is available for pre-order on GameChops, where you can also sample a handful of tracks, including one by Manami Matsumae the composer of Mega Man. It will also feature Austin Wintory (Journey), Eirik Suhrke (Spelunky, Ridiculous Fishing, Hotline Miami), Keiji...

Journey's vast desert setting was chosen to help players connect on a 'human level'

Journey's rolling deserts were designed to help players connect with one another, lead engineer John Edwards said during a GDC presentation. Speaking at the "Sand Rendering in Journey" panel, Edwards explained how the team wanted to create a game that had an experience similar to finding someone on a hiking trail. "There's this desire to connect with them in some way," Edwards said. "To say hello. You want to acknowledge them on a human level, which is somehow strangely uncommon in a lot of online video games ... We thought the best environment for this would be a vast and barren desert." To understand the look and movement of sand and re-create it properly, the entire team took a trip to Pismo Beach. They spent their time running, jumping and diving through the dunes. According to...

Deep Sea creator Robin Arnott launches Kickstarter for new game SoundSelf

Robin Arnott, the creator of the gas mask-powered horror game Deep Sea and composer of Antichamber, has launched a Kickstarter drive to raise funds for his new project, a similarly audio-focused game titled SoundSelf. SoundSelf is a "euphoric exploration game" that both creates a virtual world around and harmonizes with players as they chant a sustained melody. The tunnels and shapes generated by the player's auditory input is different during each one-hour play session, and additional players can join in the chanting to change how the game responds. "There is no right way to play SoundSelf: Play with different sounds and the game will dance with you, or sustain long tones and SoundSelf will take you deep into your own sonic universe," the Kickstarter description reads. "Play alone,...
