Back catalog, digital drive Ubisoft's better-than-expected sales

Ubisoft reported €76 million (approximately $99.5 million) in sales for the first fiscal quarter ending June 30, which the company said is slightly higher than its initial targets and was bolstered by sales of its back catalog and digital games. Despite overshooting initial estimates of €70 million ($91.6 million), first-quarter sales were down 42.2 percent compared to the same period last fiscal year, which brought in €131 million ($171.5 million) and included the launch of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. The company also saw a 56 percent increase in back catalog game sales and attributed the increase to the "solid performance" of Assassin's Creed 3, Far Cry 3, Just Dance 4, Rocksmith and Rayman Origins. Capsized lands on Xbox Live, Borderlands 2, Dishonored, Metal Gear and more discounted in July

Capsized, an indie platformer ported to Xbox 360 by Koolhaus Games, will arrive on Xbox Live July 5, and downloadable content for Borderlands 2, Dishonored, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and more will be discounted this month, according to Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb's roundup of content and sales set to hit Xbox Live Marketplace. Ubisoft announces 18 percent increase in annual sales driven by Assassin's Creed and Far Cry

Ubisoft's annual sales rose 18 percent and its operating income increased by 79 percent, driven in part by strong sales of games in the Assassin's Creed and Far Cry franchises, according to the company's financial report for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013. The report highlights "revenue generated from games for core gamers," which was up 60 percent year-over-year. Ubisoft called out Assassin's Creed 3, which sold more than 12.5 million units, and Far Cry 3, which sold more than 6 million units, as driving the increase. Revenue from casual games shrunk 32 percent year-over-year, though Just Dance 4 sold 8.5 million units. ZombiU, Assassin's Creed 3 and other Ubisoft games 30 percent off in Wii U eShop

Six Ubisoft titles for Wii U — Assassin's Creed 3, ZombiU, Rabbids Land, Just Dance 4, ESPN Sports Connection and Your Shape: Fitness Evolved 2013 — are now 30 percent off their regular price through Nintendo's eShop. The promotion, which is exclusive to Nintendo's online store, runs until Tuesday, Feb. 26, Nintendo said in an email. Other Wii U games on sale through the eShop include Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition and Trine 2: Director's Cut. Wii U owners can also get another game on the cheap for a limited time through Nintendo's eShop: classic SNES racing game F-Zero. The Virtual Console title is currently $0.30.

Journey takes the lead in BAFTA nominations

The British Academy of Film, Television and Arts unveiled this years nominees for games in 2013, revealing thatgamecompany's meditative saga Journey has taken the lead with eight nominations. A total of 53 video games are up for awards across 17 categories this year. Trailing immediately behind Journey in greatest number of awards in Telltale Games' The Walking Dead with seven nominations, Far Cry 3 with six and indie darling Dear Esther with five nominations. Ubisoft shipments of Assassin's Creed 3 exceed 12M units, Far Cry 3 above 4.5M units

Ubisoft's total sales for Assassin's Creed 3 have now passed the 12 million mark worldwide, while Far Cry 3 sales are up over 4.5 million units, the French publisher announced today in its third-quarter financial report. The sales numbers include units shipped to retailers as well as copies sold digitally. Assassin's Creed 3 is available on PlayStation Network and in the Wii U eShop. Over 3.5 million copies of the game were sold during its launch week at the end of October, and in mid-December, Ubisoft announced sales of more than 7 million units worldwide. Ubisoft's free Uplay app for Nintendo's Wii U doesn't just add-on an achievement system for the publisher's games, it also offers up some neat freebies for their titles. Once registered, players can browse through Ubisoft's (currently tiny) library and check out the actions and rewards for each game. Actions are essentially point-awarding achievements, while the rewards include things like new costumes, perks and even modes for the games. Players unlock these bonus items by spending Uplay points.
