Ubisoft announces 18 percent increase in annual sales driven by Assassin's Creed and Far Cry

Ubisoft's annual sales rose 18 percent and its operating income increased by 79 percent, driven in part by strong sales of games in the Assassin's Creed and Far Cry franchises, according to the company's financial report for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013. The report highlights "revenue generated from games for core gamers," which was up 60 percent year-over-year. Ubisoft called out Assassin's Creed 3, which sold more than 12.5 million units, and Far Cry 3, which sold more than 6 million units, as driving the increase. Revenue from casual games shrunk 32 percent year-over-year, though Just Dance 4 sold 8.5 million units. Ubisoft shipments of Assassin's Creed 3 exceed 12M units, Far Cry 3 above 4.5M units

Ubisoft's total sales for Assassin's Creed 3 have now passed the 12 million mark worldwide, while Far Cry 3 sales are up over 4.5 million units, the French publisher announced today in its third-quarter financial report. The sales numbers include units shipped to retailers as well as copies sold digitally. Assassin's Creed 3 is available on PlayStation Network and in the Wii U eShop. Over 3.5 million copies of the game were sold during its launch week at the end of October, and in mid-December, Ubisoft announced sales of more than 7 million units worldwide. Dell selling Wii U hardware and software

The Wii U and a select few games are now available for pre-order from Dell. Dell's video game section already offers every other modern console and handheld: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS. Dell isn't selling the cheaper Basic Set; just the Deluxe Set. However, it cannot be purchased alone; it is only available in a $459.99 bundle with Madden NFL 13 and Just Dance 4. And there's no guarantee that pre-ordering the bundle means you'll get it on launch day or shortly afterward — according to Dell, it "usually ships" in one to two weeks. Nintendo bringing Wii U, 3DS to malls across America

Nintendo will set up shop at malls nationwide during the holiday season, letting shoppers get hands-on experience with the Wii U and 3DS, the company announced today. Dubbed the "Nintendo Holiday Mall Experience," the setup will offer people the chance to try out Wii U games such as New Super Mario Bros. U, Nintendo Land, ZombiU, FIFA 13, Madden NFL 13, Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition, Just Dance 4, Darksiders 2 and Scribblenauts Unlimited. Assassin's Creed 3 first-week sales exceed 3.5 million copies, Ubisoft says

Ubisoft estimates it sold more than 3.5 million copies of Assassin's Creed 3 during the game's first week of availability, according to the company's financial report for the first half of its 2012-13 fiscal year. The figure is more than double the number of sales from Assassin's Creed: Revelations' first week in 2011, the report said. Ubisoft's first financial half-year ended on Sept. 30. So while the company's earnings report doesn't factor in Assassin's Creed 3 sales, the game's significant marketing costs — along with those for Ubisoft's other third-quarter releases, including Far Cry 3 — raised selling expenses and led to a current operating loss of €58.1 million ($74.4 million). Redbox faces challenges in offering some major games, says company executive

Increasing numbers of recent video games span multiple discs, especially on Xbox 360, and physical rental service Redbox's one-disc policy makes it difficult for the company to offer such titles, said vice president of games Joel Resnick in an interview with Gamasutra. Redbox kiosks ask for one fee per disc, and while some suggest the company simply charge twice as much for a two-disc game, that won't work because customers might return the discs to separate locations. Further complicating the issue, said Resnick, is that "there's a lack of consistency in how the content is split from game to game." In the case of Halo 4, the single-player campaign is on the first disc and multiplayer is on the second, but users must insert disc one into the Xbox 360 in order to access multiplayer...

Wii bundles with Just Dance 4 or Skylanders Giants coming Nov. 4

Two new Wii bundles, one featuring Ubisoft's Just Dance 4 and the other featuring Activision's Skylanders Giants, will be available starting Nov. 4, Nintendo announced today. The Skylanders Giants bundle includes a blue Wii console with matching Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk controllers, along with a copy of the game, one Portal of Power for its action figures, two Skylanders figures and one exclusive Giant Skylander.
