Wii U version of Karateka 'never went into development,' says producer

The studio behind Jordan Mechner's 2012 remake of Karateka considered putting the title on Wii U, but that version "never went into development," assistant producer Heather D'Evelyn told Nintendo Everything. Liquid Entertainment released Karateka on Xbox Live Arcade last November, and on PlayStation Network, Windows PC and iOS in December. An ESRB listing from last August rated the title on those platforms as well as on Wii U. D'Evelyn said that Liquid thought about a Wii U version "at the beginning of the project but [it] never went into development." D'Evelyn added that Liquid has no plans to make a Wii U version at this time. We asked D'Evelyn in December about a potential Android version of Karateka; at the time, she told Polygon that Liquid had "no official plans right now, but...

Karateka on iOS stays true to the '80s original, says creator Jordan Mechner

The iOS port of classic fighting game Karateka stays true to the 1980s original in terms of the size of the game and the simplicity of the platform, creator Jordan Mechner told Touch Arcade. Mechner discusses the differences between developing titles thirty years ago compared to the present day. While the original Karateka was released on a 143K floppy disk and designed for the Apple II, a platform with 48K and a 1MHz processor, the iOS release is roughly 1GB in size. According to Mechner: "I wanted to be true to the original Karateka in the size of the game. "We talked about, before, how there's now a gigabyte of data but, as a playing experience, the original Karateka was a game where you could experience a story from beginning to end in a single play session. Today there are games...

Jordan Mechner's Karateka remake looks to modernize a classic story

The re-imagining of Karateka launches today on Xbox Live Arcade and later this month on PlayStation Network, Steam and iOS. Mechner's team hired Adam Lisagor and his Los Angeles-based production company, Sandwich Video, to create a promotional video for the game. As Lisagor explained in a phone interview with Polygon, the project was a great fit — he had developed a love for Karateka by playing it as a 6-year-old. Sandwich Video produced the commercial you see above, a charming, funny spot that brings character models from the 1984 original and 2012 remake into a real-world Japanese garden. "I was fixated on the idea of taking this rich, beautiful world that was created for the new game and trying to recreate it in the analog world," said Lisagor. Lisagor took the comedy further...
