Killer Is Dead review: blunt instrument

While Grasshopper Manufacture's previous games have been divisive releases with minimal commercial success, they all possessed a certain kind of bizarre, tonal self-assurance. Grasshopper figurehead Suda51 has served as a sort of exploitation auteur, liberally borrowing ideas and aesthetics from genre film, comics and other games to make some of the more memorable Japanese games in recent memory. Now Grasshopper is back with Killer Is Dead, bringing with it another mysterious assassin and a strange cast of characters and villains. But the charm and energy of previous Grasshopper games is gone, supplanted by a lethargy and choppiness that plagues Killer Is Dead from start to finish — and a misogynistic mean streak a mile long makes it memorable for all the wrong reasons. Killer Is...

Why Suda51 wants to 'thoroughly demolish the existing Grasshopper traits'

Grasshopper Manufacture CEO Goichi "Suda51" Suda wants to "thoroughly demolish" the traits associated with the studio that created games like Lollipop Chainsaw, Killer Is Dead and No More Heroes, according to a 4Gamer interview that was translated by Siliconera. Suda acknowledged that, even within Grasshopper, the studio's traits are debatable but ready for destruction. "I believe that when it comes to ‘Grasshopper traits,' people have different ideas [as to what they are]," Suda said. "Even for us, each staff member at Grasshopper has different ideas. "In the midst of that, I personally would like to thoroughly demolish the existing Grasshopper traits, one by one. And by demolishing them, I'd like to propose new ideas, and create new ways to play". The idea behind that creative...

South Australian Attorney General says game classifications need further scrutiny

South Australia Attorney General John Rau believes the country's new video game classification rules are not being applied strictly enough and should be further investigated by the Federal Government, according to a report from ABC Australia. Rau said the updated classification system could be giving children access to violent and sexual content, despite the government's agreement last January to introduce the R18+ mature classification and fine-tune restrictions for the MA15+ rating. He believes that more than a dozen games have launched in Australia last year that have been rated MA15+ while receiving higher, more mature ratings in Europe and North America. Rau plans to voice his concerns to the Federal Government, despite being satisfied with the recent launch of Grand Theft Auto 5...

Japan Review Check: Killer is Dead

A quick look at the most interesting games coming out next week in Japan, courtesy of Famitsu magazine's review pages: - Killer is Dead (9/9/9/8, 35 out of 40 points): The latest from Suda51 and the gang at Grasshopper Manufacture earns a Platinum award from Famitsu, seemingly out of sheer force of impact. "The unique world setting isn't for everyone," began editor Reona Ebihara, "but the exacting balance between hilarity and insanity is definitely worth seeing for yourself! The airy, fast-tempo action lets you do all these flashy attacks even with button mashing, so it's great to play. There are a lot of features packed in here, making it seem a bit complex at first, but there's a certain depth to it that makes it a lot more approachable than you'd think, which I like." "The...
