While Grasshopper Manufacture's previous games have been divisive releases with minimal commercial success, they all possessed a certain kind of bizarre, tonal self-assurance. Grasshopper figurehead Suda51 has served as a sort of exploitation auteur, liberally borrowing ideas and aesthetics from genre film, comics and other games to make some of the more memorable Japanese games in recent memory. Now Grasshopper is back with Killer Is Dead, bringing with it another mysterious assassin and a strange cast of characters and villains. But the charm and energy of previous Grasshopper games is gone, supplanted by a lethargy and choppiness that plagues Killer Is Dead from start to finish — and a misogynistic mean streak a mile long makes it memorable for all the wrong reasons. Killer Is...

Killer is Dead, the assassin action game from developer Grasshopper Manufacture, is being ported to Windows PC and will be released May 9 in Europe and the U.K., publisher Deep Silver announced today. The original game launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in August 2013. The PC port is being developed by Kadokawa Games, which published the console release in Japan. Known as the Nightmare Edition, the PC version will include some new content and features over the existing game. On the new Nightmare Mode difficulty level, players will only have three options to kill enemies: headshots, Adrenaline Burst and Dodge Burst. The Nightmare Edition will also come with the Smooth Operator Pack, which was available only as a pre-order bonus for the console version of the game; it will be...

South Australia Attorney General John Rau believes the country's new video game classification rules are not being applied strictly enough and should be further investigated by the Federal Government, according to a report from ABC Australia. Rau said the updated classification system could be giving children access to violent and sexual content, despite the government's agreement last January to introduce the R18+ mature classification and fine-tune restrictions for the MA15+ rating. He believes that more than a dozen games have launched in Australia last year that have been rated MA15+ while receiving higher, more mature ratings in Europe and North America. Rau plans to voice his concerns to the Federal Government, despite being satisfied with the recent launch of Grand Theft Auto 5...

A quick look at the most interesting games coming out next week in Japan, courtesy of Famitsu magazine's review pages: - Killer is Dead (9/9/9/8, 35 out of 40 points): The latest from Suda51 and the gang at Grasshopper Manufacture earns a Platinum award from Famitsu, seemingly out of sheer force of impact. "The unique world setting isn't for everyone," began editor Reona Ebihara, "but the exacting balance between hilarity and insanity is definitely worth seeing for yourself! The airy, fast-tempo action lets you do all these flashy attacks even with button mashing, so it's great to play. There are a lot of features packed in here, making it seem a bit complex at first, but there's a certain depth to it that makes it a lot more approachable than you'd think, which I like." "The...

A new trailer for Suda 51's surreal hyper-violent action game Killer Is Dead mixes action and cutscenes with protagonist Mondo Zappa facing off against a myriad of foes. The trailer introduces us to an antagonist named David, who says he's seeking power to take over the world. Mondo calls him out on this by breaking the fourth wall between fiction and the audience, saying it's trite and cliche and that the gamers will complain about it. Following up on that, the trailer introduces enemies like a spider-lady fought in a house made out of sweets like candy and doughnuts and a giant that shoots lasers out of its eyes. Mondo and David duel, with the antagonist clad in what appears to be a golden fetish harness and jock strap. Killer Is Dead releases on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this...

Quirky auteur game designer Goichi Suda, better known by his nickname Suda 51, has released a video showing viewers around the room where he had been speaking with the media about his upcoming game Killer is Dead. "We had about 30 appointments in total," says Suda, pointing to the cutout of protagonist Mondo Zappa standing behind him. "I found out today during one of the interviews that he is Italian. He is an Italian guy." As a gracious host, Suda says he served media coffee and water, and found that they liked Japanese snacks like Pocky and Hi-Chew. The Diet Coke, however, wasn't nearly as popular. A new Killer is Dead trailer released earlier this morning. The game will hit Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this summer in Japan, and the West at an as-yet-unannounced date.
