Killzone: Mercenary coming Sept. 10, one week early

Killzone: Mercenary will be released Sept. 10 on PlayStation Vita in North America, one week ahead of its previously announced release date, publisher Sony Computer Entertainment announced today. The first-person shooter will be released Sept. 4 in Europe and Sept. 6 in the U.K., according to the European PlayStation Blog. It's perhaps worth noting that Sony revealed the old release date, Sept. 17, in late January — just before Rockstar Games announced its plans to launch Grand Theft Auto 5 on that date. Players who pre-order Killzone: Mercenary will receive a code that gives them double XP for the first two days after launch, along with bonus Vektan Cash that will allow them to buy a new weapon without playing a single mission. U.S. GameStop pre-order customers will get an...

Killzone: Mercenary dev details 'wrist-mounted murder assistant'

Killzone: Mercenary's biggest addition to the series' gameplay is a "wrist-mounted murder assistant," the Van-Guard, which allows players to unleash special weapons by tapping on the PlayStation Vita's touchscreen, said art director Tom Jones on the PlayStation Blog. In multiplayer combat, they function similarly to killstreaks, but a cooldown timer ensures they can't be abused. Melee attacks also take place on the PS Vita's touchscreen, with simple swipes enabling players to employ vicious tactics like...

Killzone: Mercenary hands-on: We're only in it for the money

Killzone: Mercenary for PlayStation Vita is billed by its creators as a "fresh take on the Killzone experience," casting players not as an ISA or Helghast soldier, but as a killer for hire who has no interest in who wins the war, only in earning the fattest paycheck. "This time you're not an army grunt who follows orders," Killzone: Mercenary game director Mathijs de Jonge said at a preview event in Hollywood. "These guys don't play by any rules or fight for any flag. You get to pick your own gear and tactics, as long as you get results." Players will assume the role of Arran Danner in Killzone: Mercenary. Danner's a member of the private military corporation Phantom, which accepts contracts that span the events of past Killzone games, offering bits of context and color to memorable...
