Killzone: Mercenary update tweaks spawning system, fixes glitches

An update that rolled out for PlayStation Vita title Killzone: Mercenary brought with it a number of glitch fixes, as well as refinements to the spawn system, according to a post on the Killzone forums. The tweaks are specifically to the spawn system's selection criteria, which developer Guerrilla Cambridge hopes will improve team-based multiplayer. The post notes that the developer will continue to revise the spawn system based on player feedback. The update also makes some general stability fixes and adds botnames chosen from the winners of a Botzone-naming competition held in May. "The major outstanding issue that we're still pursuing are the reported grey screen spawn locks that some of you have seen," technical director Matt Porter explained in the post. "If you are still...

Killzone: Mercenary expanded with two free maps today

Killzone: Mercenary players can now download two extra multiplayer maps for free, developer Guerrilla Cambridge announced today on the game's forums. The studio originally announced in November that the maps would be coming with a title update in early 2014. The maps, Tharsis Depot and Blood Gracht, are reworked versions of environments from the multiplayer component of Killzone 2. "Both maps may be familiar to some of you; but each has been given a fresh lick of paint for its Vita debut," said Matt Porter, technical director at Guerrilla Cambridge. Tharsis Depot (screenshot above) is the name of the mining platform under which action on this map takes place. The map is well suited to the Guerrilla Warfare and Mercenary modes. Blood Gracht (screenshot below) is set in the city of...

BioShock Infinite joins PS Plus as Sony begins '14 for '14' sale

Irrational Games' BioShock Infinite will become the latest addition to the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection when Sony updates the PlayStation Store tomorrow, the company announced today. BioShock Infinite was originally released on PlayStation 3, Windows PC and Xbox 360 in March 2013, and went on to garner widespread acclaim as well as a critical backlash regarding elements such as its use of graphic violence. Infinite regularly costs $39.99 on the PS Store. Irrational is currently working on Burial at Sea - Episode Two, the conclusion to the game's story expansion. Earlier this month, Sony added DmC: Devil May Cry and the PlayStation 4 version of Don't Starve to the Instant Game Collection. Tomorrow, the company will begin its "14 for '14" sale, which cuts prices on 14 PS3...

Killzone: Mercenary's next updates free up storage space, add free content

Guerrilla Cambridge will release three updates for its PlayStation Vita shooter, Killzone: Mercenary, over the next few months, reducing the footprint of the game's hefty patches and adding new multiplayer content. Killzone: Mercenary's third update, due in "the next few weeks," will free up approximately 800 MB of space consumed by the game's first two patches. The Vita game's day-one and multiplayer stability patches each weighed in at more than 1 GB. The game's fourth update is due in January. It will improve matching, help reduce connectivity problems and add an auto team-rebalancing feature, Guerrilla Cambridge senior producer Mark Green said on the PlayStation Blog. A fifth update plans to add two new multiplayer maps, as well as offline Botzone for Mercenary and Guerrilla...

Killzone: Mercenary review: make the money

Against all odds, Mercenary's plot held my attention Killzone: Mercenary is set alongside the events of the console Killzone games, following mute protagonist Danner as he navigates the murky sidelines of the ISA war against the Helghast. Rather than another adventure from the perspective of an ISA grunt, Danner is a gun for hire, happily serving whatever side will pay the most money. Throughout the single-player campaign's five or six hours, various twists place Danner at many different angles in the war. Against all odds and despite the need for some serious suspension of disbelief, Mercenary's plot managed to hold my attention. Not much time is devoted to the story, but the few cutscenes and scattered moments of dialogue are used wisely to build a plot that's...

Killzone: Mercenary will have a 1.16 GB day-one stability patch

Guerilla Cambridge's Killzone: Mercenary will require a day-one patch when it launches later this month, reports The Sixth Axis. Upon loading up a copy of the PlayStation Vita title, a message box will reportedly appear announced the patch — a 1190 MB download that promises "general stability fixes and performance optimizations." Polygon has reached out to Sony for additional details on the patch contents. The size of the full game download is 3.3GB; the patch brings the total game size to around 4.5 GB. Killzone: Mercenary is the first Killzone title not to be developed directly by Guerilla Games. The game picks up where the first 2004 Killzone left off and plays through many of the events of the Killzone trilogy. The game launches today in Europe, tomorrow in Japan and on Sept. 10...

Japan Review Check: Puppeteer, DOA5 Ultimate

A quick look at the most interesting games coming out in Japan next week, as reviewed in the latest issue of Famitsu magazine. - Puppeteer (9/9/9/9, 36 out of 40 points): SCE Japan Studio's latest earned major praise for the novelty of its visual premise. "The characters, music, and sound effects are all done up as if you're seeing a stage show, creating a play atmosphere I can only describe as mysterious," wrote editor Reona Ebihara. "The way they depict changes in scenes is particularly innovative. Also, while the action is set at a pretty challenging level, it gets a lot easier in co-op, making this a great game for families or couples." "The scenes change one after the other," added writer Jigoro Ashida, "and all the objects that make them up are totally unique, meaning that the...

How Killzone: Mercenary plans to be a console-quality handheld FPS

The design of Sony's PlayStation Vita suggests that the line between console, handheld and mobile games doesn't have to be so thick. The Vita sports two analog sticks, like the consoles that came before it. In a nod to the smartphone and tablet revolution of the last half decade its display doubles as a touchscreen. Even the backside of the handheld includes a giant pasture for touch input. But there's at least one dominant genre that hasn't made a smooth transition to the PS Vita. Despite the graphical leaps over its PSP predecessor, despite is dual analog sticks, since its early 2012 release, there haven't been many first-person shooters. And those that have been released haven't been lauded with praise. Resistance: Burnings Skies earned a 6.5/10 and Call of Duty: Black Ops...
