Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance review: dropping the dream

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance might as well describe the ten-year chasm separating it and the original Kingdom Hearts. Somewhere across the span of seven games on four different platforms, the spark that made the Kingdom Hearts franchise initially appealing has fizzled. Square Enix is still following the campy formula of hopping between Disney-themed worlds, but thanks to a glut of mismatched new mechanics and pacing issues, Kingdom Hearts 3D stumbles enough to stir frustration and not much else. Kingdom Hearts 3D follows the events of last year's Kingdom Hearts re: Coded for the DS. Series protagonists Sora and Riku must undergo the Mark of Mastery test - a physical examination that, if passed, will earn them the title of Keyblade Masters. They advenure to worlds based on...

Meet the Canadian guy who co-directs the Kingdom Hearts series

Would it surprise you to hear that one of the main guys behind the past four Kingdom Hearts games comes from the land of beavers, Timbits and all-dressed potato chips? It's true: As an interview in this week's issue of Famitsu magazine reveals, series co-director Tai Yasue was born and raised in Canada, on a farm that his dad still owns. "I remember that I first took an interest in Japan because of Dragon Quest 3," he recalled. "I didn't understand Japanese very much at the time, so I finished the game pretty much with a dictionary in one hand, although I didn't get what the significance of 'puff puff' was back then." Despite his Japanese heritage, Yasue never lived in Asia until he went off to college, although he was a keen fan of Japanese role-playing games. "The game that...

'The World Ends With You' announcement may be coming from Square Enix

An announcement likely related to Nintendo DS role-playing game The World Ends With You is coming from Square Enix next week, according to a teaser site. The site's url contains "subaseka," which could be a shortening of the game's Japanese title, Subarashiki Kono Sekai ("It's a Wonderful World"). The background music is a remix of two of the title's most well-known songs, "Calling" and "Twister," with riffs from the later presenting themselves if you move your computer's clock forward three days. The site's darkened background image is reminiscent of the game's original box art; adjusting your computer clock gradually reveals what looks like the outline of the city in the art's background, as well as layers lyrics onto the music. The bottom of the page lists Tetsuya Nomura and Gen...
