Kingdom Hearts brought my family together when we needed it most

He was born with achondroplasia, a form of Dwarfism that curved his back and made it difficult for him to walk. Doctors told my parents he wouldn't live past the age of 10. I didn't know this at the time. I did know that my mother cried a lot whenever she would play with or feed him. My siblings and I really didn't know what to do with each other. Then, during the super-boring summer of 2002, our mother bought us a copy of Kingdom Hearts. Full house My parents would spend days at a time in Maryland with Ray, traveling back and forth from his team of specialist doctors for the next four years. When Ray was home, I'd set all his toys out on a blanket and sit with him while he played, listening to his unintelligible gurgling and kissing his cheeks until they were red whenever he smiled....

E3 2014: What we probably (and definitely) won't see this week

The past month or so has been rife with announcements that certain games and companies will not have a presence at E3 this year. From highly-anticipated titles announced almost eight years ago to high-level executives sitting it out to take it easy, here's what you probably won't, and definitely won't, see at E3. Absence confirmed Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3: These two Square Enix role-playing games are earning mystical unicorn status by virtue of being announced too early and then failing to appear at E3 year after year. We got some information at last year's expo, where Square announced both would come to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. But earlier this week, producer Shinji Hashimoto told Famitsu that neither game would have a presence at E3 and more details on both games...

DualShock 4 buyers test old games to create compatibility list

With DualShock 4 controllers now appearing on retail shelves, gamers are getting to grips with figuring out which PlayStation 3 games work with the new controller. A Reddit thread has been opened to handle the issue, offering an initial list of games. Users are being invited to add to the list. "I just got my DualShock 4 today, and have noticed some games work, and some don't," wrote thread organizer Lapwner. "So, let's try to create a list so people can see which games work and which games don't. Note that the motion sensing does not work, so even though some games work with the controller, if they are reliant on the motion sensing, then they probably aren't worth playing it with." The current list of compatible games includes: Working Call of Duty (MW2, MW3, Black Ops, Black Ops...

Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer highlights gameplay features, pre-orders open

Shown during the recent D23 Expo in Japan, a new PlayStation 4 gameplay trailer for Kingdom Hearts 3 highlights the game's new abilities, attacks and enemies. According to game director Tetsuya Nomura, the new title will "wrap up story elements present since the first game," yet the series will continue beyond Kingdom Hearts 3. The battles that the series' characters have been fighting for the past decade will come to a head in the game and that a particular long-fought enemy will meet its demise. Kingdom Hearts 3 is expected to release on next-generation consoles the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One; however, a release date is yet to be announced. The action role-playing game is now available for pre-order for $59.99 from online retailers, such as GameStop and Amazon. It was also revealed...

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix arriving in 2014 on PS3

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix will launch globally in 2014 as a PlayStation 3 exclusive, Mat Kishimoto associate product manager at Square Enix outlined on the PlayStation blog today. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix will feature two games previously only released in Japan and Nintendo DS title Kingdom Hearts Re:coded, which will feature overhauled high definition cinematics. The two action role-playing games about to make their western debuts are PlayStation 2 title Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix —Kingdom Hearts 2 was released in western markets in 2006 — and PlayStation Portable game Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix. "I'm so excited to be able to see all of these games included as a part of this compilation, but personally, the most exciting title may be Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep...

Drakengard 3 was developed with 'mature JRPG players' in mind, says director

Drakengard 3, the in-development prequel to the Drakengard role-playing game trilogy, was developed with "mature, more hardcore JRPG" players in mind, producer Takamasa Shiba told Polygon during a recent event demoing the title. It has been eight years since the last game, Drakengard 2, launched on PlayStation 2 and four years since the debut of series spin-off game Nier. Shiba explained that the large time gap was due to a fluctuating market — as casual gaming became more common, less players were willing to sink time into a 30-plus hour role-playing game that required lengthy sessions of grinding for experience points, cutscenes and other parts that failed to hit the instant gratification sweet-spot. "There's a larger market now," Shiba said. "But before, there were more casual...

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix trailer is all about the '.5'

A new trailer for Square Enix's HD re-release of PlayStation 2 action RPG Kingdom Hearts focuses on the parts of the game that aren't the original Kingdom Hearts. In addition to the HD remaster of Kingdom Hearts, HD 1.5 Remix includes a HD version of Re: Chain of Memories, itself a PS2 remake of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories on the Game Boy Advance. Though Chain of Memories plays similarly to the original game, its combat is actually card-based, with players selecting cards in real time for attacks and magic spells. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix also includes the "entire cinematic story" of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days for the Nintendo DS as told through the game's cutscenes. 358/2 Days focused on the members of the enigmatic Organization XIII, which made its debut in Chain of Memories....

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix gameplay trailer brings boss battles

A new trailer for Square Enix's HD remaster of Kingdom Hearts focuses on the gameplay and combat. The trailer boasts that the new version of the game will include "new abilities, enemies and commands," and shows off combat both on-foot and (briefly) in the rail-shooter Gummi Ship segments. We briefly get a glimpse of Final Fantasy 7's Cloud Strife fighting Sora, Donald and Goofy in the Olympus arena, as he did in the original game. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix hits PlayStation 3 on Sept. 10. It contains content from Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories, and cutscenes from Nintendo DS title 358/2 Days.

Kingdom Hearts creator hoping to add Star Wars and Marvel content in future

Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura is keen to include Star Wars and Marvel-related content to the Kingdom Hearts franchise, he told Finaland during last week's Japan Expo in Paris. But despite interest from the game's creator, restrictions in place by Disney are still a barrier to entry for any new franchise the team hopes to incorporate in the Kingdom Hearts universe. "Of course it would be great if we could add those licenses as well," said Nomura. "But there are lots of rules and restrictions by Disney so we can't actually put in everything people want. "So it's a quite difficult decision but we're gonna prepare some surprises for you so, just wait for the information."The Kingdom Hearts head also highlighted Final Fantasy developer Yoshinori Kitase's own interest in the...

Master swordsmith forges real-life replica of a Skyrim Orcish Battleaxe

Man at Arms' Master swordsmith, Tony Swatton, forged a real-life replica of an Orcish Battleaxe from Bethesda's role playing game, Skyrim. The video above demonstrates Swatton in action as he talks about the battleaxe's creation process. According to the video, he has to put in extra effort to make the axe look like it was forged by an orc. The battleaxe's blade consists of the type of steel used in Mac truck springs, and even though the weapon is meant to be crude, he tweaks its lines with a bandsaw to give it a refined crudeness. The axe's handle is red oak with a buffalo's femur adorned on its end. As Swatton points out, an orc swordsmith wouldn't have access to a belt grinder to shape the wood, it would use an axe, so he used the belt grinder to make it look like it was fashioned...
