Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light has run its course

Crystal Dynamics' has run its course with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Tomb Raider's creative director Noah Hughes told OXM in a recent interview. "No, Guardian was a great opportunity to explore things that we may not have done in the pillar franchise titles, but in that case it was co-op," Hughes said when asked if there was a future for Guardian. "There are no plans to do anything in that series but it was a great opportunity to do something a little bit outside of the core." Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light came to fruition when Crystal Dynamics were experimenting with what would constitute as a Tomb Raider reboot in 2009. The title was the result of that experimentation and was released in 2010. Hughes also told OXM that while Crystal Dynamics is still interested...

Crystal Dynamics looking to experiment with multiplayer in future Tomb Raider games

Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider games have featured different kinds of multiplayer modes, and creative director Noah Hughes said to OXM UK that the studio is keen to try other multiplayer experiments in future entries in the series. The studio made the upcoming series reboot, Tomb Raider, although its multiplayer component — which consists of traditional third-person shooter modes, and which our reviewer found to be poor — was developed separately by Eidos Montreal. Crystal Dynamics previously made Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, a co-op title. "We're anxious to continue to play with ways that people could tomb raid together," said Hughes. He described Tomb Raider's competitive multiplayer suite as "more of a complementary experience" to the action in the single-player...

Cory Barlog joins Crystal Dynamics to work on Tomb Raider and unannounced game

Industry veteral Cory Barlog has joined the development team at Crystal Dynamics to work on the new Tomb Raider reboot and an unannounced title, the studio announced in a press release today. Barlog is known mostly for his involvement in the God of War series, serving in a number of directorial and creative roles for God of War 1, 2, Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta. Barlog was previously associated with the video game adaptation of Mad Max alongside director George Miller, who would later pull the film's rights and instead hand them to LA Noire developer Team Bondi — shortly before Miller's own dev studio, KMM Games, absorbed Bondi wholesale. We've reached out to Crystal Dynamics and its parent company, Square Enix, for more information on what Barlog's duties will be on the...
