Legend of Grimrock is one of those indie titles that unabashedly stokes nostalgia for a long-lost niche genre. Every design decision recalls elements of Might & Magic, Dungeon Master, and Wizardry. The inspiration is obvious looking at the two PDFs included with the game: a lengthy, lore-laden manual of the variety that no one makes in 2012, and Grimrock-themed graph paper with which particularly hardcore players can map out the dungeon by hand. Anyone without a fondness for classic CRPGs will be hard-pressed to see the appeal in Grimrock's old-school focus. I have that affection. As a kid, I spent hundreds of hours mapping out every corner of Might & Magic III: Isles of Terra. I put up with confusing quests and strange, seemingly hateful game mechanics, happy to be pulled into its...

Legend of Grimrock 2, a sequel to Almost Human's first-person dungeon diving game for Windows PC and Mac, is in development, the title's creators announced today. The announcement comes after a long period of silence for the studio, which a post on Almost Human's blog explains came from an uncertainty of what the team was going to do next. A DLC expansion to the original was the first plan the developer was going to go with, but ultimately decided they would be constrained by the limitations of the first title, and would prefer to move on to a new game altogether. "Creating a mere DLC or expansion to Grimrock simply would not have felt right," the blog post reads. "As today's meeting proved, we still have a lot of ideas we'd like to explore, lots and lots of new content already done...

PC gamers have snapped up more than 600,000 copies of Legend of Grimrock, the dungeon crawler role-playing game released by Almost Human in 2012. Thanks to that higher-than-expected figure, "the future of our company is secured for a long time," says the game's developer. "We would've been happy with just one tenth of the sales numbers, so needless to say we're very happy," writes Almost Human co-founder Juho Salila on the company's blog. "But great success doesn't mean we haven't lost our passion for making great games," Salila writes, offering a peek at what's in the works for Legend of Grimrock. The Finnish developer released the Windows version of Legend of Grimrock last April and released Mac and Linux ports late last year alongside Humble Indie Bundle 7.

The latest Humble Indie Bundle has come to a close with $2.65 million in total sales over a two-week period, according to the official site. Nearly 400,000 bundles — a mix of nine indie video games, game soundtracks and documentary Indie Game: The Movie — were sold. Thanks to contributions made during Humble Indie Bundle 7, the group has raised more than $10 million for charity, according to Humble Bundle's Jeffrey Rosen. Humble Bundle buyers can opt to donate a portion of their bundle contribution to Child's Play and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Humble Indie Bundle 7 launched on Dec. 19 with Windows, Mac and Linux versions of The Binding of Isaac, Closure, Shank 2, Snapshot, Legend of Grimrock, Dungeon Defenders and Indie Game: The Movie. Budding dungeon designers will be able to create their own trap-filled, slime-infested maps starting tomorrow, October 4th, with the release of Legend of Grimrock's new level editor. The editor, which has been in player beta testing for the better part of a month, lets Legend of Grimrock players map out their own dungeons, then fill them full of traps and puzzles built from the 350-plus assets included in the original dungeon crawler. The editor even allows for custom graphics and sounds, as demonstrated in the video below. Players can then upload and share their creations through the Steam Workshop. In addition to the release of the level editor, a long list of bug fixes and gameplay tweaks from the public beta will also be implemented. A changelog is available at the official Legend...
