Lego Lord of the Rings review: there and back again

Lego Lord of the Rings follows the hobbit Frodo Baggins and his crew of companions as they maneuver through tense political alliances, a brewing war and many more obstacles on a quest to destroy the One Ring. The scenario may seem a little overblown for toy figurines, but it provides a good excuse for a journey across all of Middle-earth, which players explore in the form of a giant open world. Within that world, they'll hit specific points where the game breaks off into smaller, linear story levels. The core of most of the story levels hasn't changed from past games — smash up Lego sets and enemies, build bridges and ladders to solve simple puzzles and perform some light platforming — but many of the levels benefit from their own unique hooks. For example, Frodo's ability to...

Lego The Lord of the Rings Xbox 360 reportedly ships with demo disc (update)

At least some Xbox 360 retail copies of Lego: The Lord of the Rings, which launched today, appear to contain the demo disc instead of the game itself, and publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has recalled the game, reports Game Informer. The demo disc is clearly marked with a black-and-white label that reads, "NOT FOR SALE." We reached out to GameStop and Warner Bros. Interactive for comment, and were told that the publisher is aware of the issue and will be releasing a statement soon. The report comes on the same day that some Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 PC copies were found to contain Mass Effect 2 on the second disc. Update: According to a statement provided to Polygon by a Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment representative, the publisher recalled "a small number" of...

'Lego: The Lord of the Rings' trailer introduces the blocky Fellowship

Warner Bros. Interactive released a new trailer for Lego: The Lord of the Rings this morning, proving that Lego humor is alive and well in the latest entry to the series. Lego: The Lord of the Rings will be reminiscent of Peter Jackson's film trilogy, following the movies' plot and visual style. From the trailer, posted below, it's clear that Warner Bros. has kept the tradition of weaving snarky humor into its blocky narratives. Playable characters will include all nine members of the Fellowship of the Ring. The game will release later this year for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo DS and 3DS, PlayStation Vita, and PC.

'LEGO: Lord of the Rings' trailer has a nice ring to it

Warner Bros. Interactive dropped the first trailer for LEGO: The Lord of the Rings today, featuring scenes mirroring Peter Jackson's film trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien's high-fantasy epic. The soundtrack and voices are ripped directly from the films. The trailer shows the Fellowship of the Ring on their mad dash through the Mines of Moria, a Balrog in hot pursuit. Structures within the mine crumble, scattering LEGO bricks everywhere as they fall away into an abyss. As the Balrog's gross breath reaches Gandalf he takes a moment to swat it away, showing that the innocent humor of the LEGO series may still be present in The Lord of the Rings. LEGO: The Lord of the Rings like all LEGO titles will retain emphasis on co-op play and retells all three books of the trilogy, touching upon...
