Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 review: at world's end

I don't blame it, either. The first Final Fantasy 13 began development 10 long years ago, releasing in 2010 to a lukewarm reception. But rather than moving on to new characters in an unrelated world as usually happens with Final Fantasy games, Square Enix decided to keep revisiting the characters of Final Fantasy 13 in two subsequent releases. The third and final game in that series, Lightning Returns finds those characters begging to be given up. It's the series' current existential crisis writ large; the characters are exhausted, and they want to rest, but Square Enix isn't ready to let go. For as much as Square has gone all in on the Final Fantasy 13 branch of the series, this conclusion is little more than a slow limp toward a long overdue finish line. As L...

Bravely Default outshines modern Final Fantasy titles by selling one million units

Nintendo 3DS role-playing game Bravely Default has sold one million copies worldwide, placing it ahead of most recent titles in Square Enix's long-lived Final Fantasy RPG series, Dengeki Online reports. Bravely Default launched in Japan in 2012, in December 2013 in Europe and in North America this past February. The game's lifetime sales, including downloads, exceed one million copies — 400,000 copies in Japan and 600,000 copies overseas, Square Enix told Dengeki. While the game is not a true Final Fantasy title, the game does borrow many elements of the 27-year-old JRPG franchise: a focus on narrative and character development, different job classes players can develop — such as mages, warriors and thieves — and a storyline focused around crystals that protect and power the earth. A...

Dress like a samurai and other Final Fantasy heroes in Lightning Returns

More downloadable costumes are available for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 today, giving players the option to dress the titular heroine as classic Final Fantasy heroes and embellished samurai garb, Square Enix announced today. For $9.99, players can pick up the Final Fantasy Legends pack, which includes outfits from three past series characters: Yuna's sphere hunter garb with Tidus' iconic blue Brotherhood sword from Final Fantasy 10-2; Cloud's SOLDIER 1st Class uniform and Buster Sword from Final Fantasy 7; and the pink dress and staff of Aerith Gainsborough, also from Final Fantasy 7. The Cloud and Aerith outfits were both previously only available through pre-ordering the title through Amazon or GameStop and the Square Enix Online Store, respectively. The Sohei Savior garb...

Harness the power of moogles with new Lightning Returns DLC

New downloadable content available today for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 adds three colorful new outfits to Lightning's wardrobe, including one that grants the heroine the magical power of moogles, Square Enix announced this morning. Moogles — one of the staple creatures of the Final Fantasy franchise — are the form and function of the Moogle Lover Schemata (or costume set, pictured above), which include the Moogle Queen dress, the staff and shield of Final Fantasy 13-2 character Mog and a large moogle hat. The garb gives Lightning's ATB gauge a boost, allowing her to attack faster. The other two available Schemata, Ultimate Savior and Divine Wear, both feature otherworldly armor sets. Ultimate Savior includes the Celestial Body garb, Excalibur weapon, Aegis Shield and Tiara...

Final Fantasy 13's Lightning could appear in future titles

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 marks the end of the Final Fantasy 13 trilogy, but heroine Lightning could make cameos in other Final Fantasy titles, director Motomu Toriyama recently told Siliconera. "For Lightning, her story ends here in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13, as this game is meant as a finale to this series," Toriyama said. "But we know that Lightning is an extremely popular character, even when compared to other Final Fantasy characters. "So there is a possibility that Lightning would appear in other future Final Fantasy titles, not as a protagonist, but as a guest character." In Lightning Returns, the titular heroine has only 13 days to save the people of her dying world. Speaking briefly about the game's mixed reviews, Toriyama said the time limit could have...

Lightning Returns trailer shows how to win with style

Square Enix released a new trailer for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 today providing further details on the title's combat system, which requires players to strategically manipulate their wardrobe and weapon stats to take down opponents. Battle in Lighting Returns is more action-oriented than its predecessors, Final Fantasy 13 and Final Fantasy 13-2, which both used variants of the franchise's active time-battle system and job class-like Paradigms. The Paradigm system allows players to switch between classes during battle — from healer to warrior and so on — and this has been replaced in Lightning Returns with a dynamic wardrobe system. The video above shows how players can customize their outfits and weapons with specific abilities and buffs, and how they can switch them on the...

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 demo hits PSN, Xbox Live today

The demo for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 is now up on Xbox Live and will be available later today on PlayStation Network, publisher Square Enix announced today. It originally went up on the Xbox Games Store last week, but according to Square Enix, that was because of a "technical glitch," and the company quickly removed the demo from the marketplace. In the 1.14 GB demo, players will take the role of Lightning as she searches for Snow Villiers in the city of Yusnaan. They'll have the opportunity to try the real-time elements of Lightning Returns' battle system, as well as a handful of the customization options available to Lightning. Sets of equipment, which are known as Schema, each have their own active time battle gauge and provide Lightning with a different group of...
