E3 2014: What we probably (and definitely) won't see this week

The past month or so has been rife with announcements that certain games and companies will not have a presence at E3 this year. From highly-anticipated titles announced almost eight years ago to high-level executives sitting it out to take it easy, here's what you probably won't, and definitely won't, see at E3. Absence confirmed Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3: These two Square Enix role-playing games are earning mystical unicorn status by virtue of being announced too early and then failing to appear at E3 year after year. Limbo free for PS Plus, while Lemmings Touch and Monster Monpiece hit PSN this week

Limbo will arrive free for PlayStation Plus subscribers this week, while Lemmings Touch and Monster Monpiece will also hit the PlayStation Network May 27, according to posts today on the PlayStation Blog. Limbo, developer Playdead's grayscale puzzle game, will join the PlayStation Vita Instant Game Collection on Tuesday, according to Kristine Steimer, senior community specialist.  Announced last September, developer d3t's Lemmings Touch allows players to guide the titular critters to safety by giving them skills and manipulating them with the PS Vita's touchscreen.  Developer Compile Heart's Monster Monpiece is a card-based battle game for PS Vita that pits Monster Girls against opponents. Skullgirls Encore goes free on PlayStation Plus Tuesday, May 13

Skullgirls Encore will be available free for PlayStation Plus subscribers on Tuesday, May 13, according to a post on the PlayStation Blog today.  The relaunched version of Skullgirls arrived on the PlayStation Network in February. The 2D fighting game received its first male character late last month.  Sony announced May's Instant Game Collection roster late last month. Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2014, SCE Japan Studio's Puppeteer and Lab Zero Games' Skullgirls Encore will arrive for PlayStation 3 owners. PlayStation 4 owners will receive Zoink's platformer Stick It to The Man. Those with a PlayStation Vita will get Playdead's black and white puzzle platformer Limbo and Futurlab's puzzle game Surge Deluxe.  Sony is also discounting dozens of games and add-on packs for titles...

Limbo, Skullgirls Encore and more join PlayStation Instant Game Collection in May

PlayStation Plus members in North America will be able to download free copies of games such as Limbo and Skullgirls Encore next month as part of May's Instant Game Collection, senior community specialist Kristine Steimer announced via the PlayStation Blog. PlayStation 4 owners can pick up Stick It to The Man, previously released for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and Steam. The game follows hard hat tester Ray, who discovers an arm sticking out of his brain after a strange accident. With his new appendage, Ray can read the minds of others. Imagine Cup game design prize now includes PAX Prime demo

Microsoft recently announced that the team that takes first place in the Imagine Cup gaming category will win a trip to Seattle to attend PAX Dev and show their game at PAX Prime, in addition to the $50,000 cash prize awarded to the winning finalist team of each category. The Imagine Cup is an annual competition open to students around the world. Using Microsoft-supplied technology, students create projects that fall into one of three main categories: games, world citizenship and innovation. The competition aims to encourage students to become entrepreneurs by developing solutions to world problems and pitching their solutions to judges. Last year, winners of each category took home $50,000 in prize money. In 2014, winners will also get to attend the two-day PAX Dev game development...

Behemoth, Playdead, Robomodo among ID@Xbox's new developers

Microsoft revealed a long list of new developers for its ID@Xbox indie developer publishing program on Xbox Wire this morning alongside an announcement that the first games from the self-publishing program are in the certification process. Detailed last August, the program allows developers to apply for entry at http://www.xbox.com/id. If accepted, they receive two Xbox One development kits and will be able to self-publish games. Microsoft also announced last year that a special Xbox One-only Unity Pro license would be available free to all ID@Xbox developers. The first round of developers was revealed last December and included Crysis developer Crytek, Broken Age developer Double Fine and Ridiculous Fishing developer Vlambeer. PS Vita Indie Mega Pack hits Europe in February (correction)

A new PlayStation Vita Indie Mega Pack featuring 10 games will launch in February, Sony announced today, outlining that the pack will be available from retail on an 4GB memory card for  €24.99 or bundled with a PS Vita for €199.99. The following 10 titles included in the Indie Mega Pack are: Alien Breed, Thomas Was Alone, Velocity Ultra, Men’s Room Mayhem, Coconut Dodge Revitalised, LIMBO, Hotline Miami, Total Recoil, Superfrog HD, Floating Cloud and God Saves the Pilgrims in HD. PixelJunk Shooter coming to PC, Mac and Linux Nov. 11

Double Eleven is bringing Q-Games' original PixelJunk Shooter to Windows PC, Mac and Linux on Nov. 11, the company announced today. PixelJunk Shooter, which originally launched for PlayStation 3 in December 2009, will be available through Steam and "selected partners" for $8.99 (or 6.99 Euro). Double Eleven, a U.K.-based indie developer and publisher behind the PlayStation Vita LittleBigPlanet and Limbo port, will launch PixelJunk Shooters as part of its partnership with Kyoto-based Q-Games. The partnership was announced in June earlier this year and would bring the two studios together to collaborate on new game projects. PixelJunk Shooter tasks players with piloting a spaceship through an underground labyrinth of different environments to save a group of stranded scientists....

Rayman Origins Vita goes free tomorrow on PlayStation Plus

The PlayStation Vita version of Rayman Origins will become the latest entrant into the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection tomorrow, Sept. 24, Sony announced today on the PlayStation Blog. As usual, this week's PS Plus update also includes discounts on a number of games. Limbo will be on sale for 20 percent off, $11.99 instead of $14.99; it's a cross-buy title, so you'll get both the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita versions with that purchase. The Penny Arcade Expo shines a bright spotlight on indie games, and Sony is joining in the celebration with a weeklong sale on a number of top-tier PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita titles from small studios.
