Don't touch that dial; Madden's broadcast upgrades with NFL Films know-how

Since 2006, the game has seen three different play-by-play announcers and two analysts, firing one team after only two years together. It's been let down by a not-ready-for-prime-time commentary engine, and it's introduced and scrapped halftime highlight shows (only to reintroduce them this year). Every good idea one year — like finally getting the announcing team to record their lines together, in Madden NFL 13 — has withered from neglect in the next. After seeing the scores given to what was supposed to be a 25th anniversary celebration, EA Tiburon had enough of trying to solve this problem by itself. "They called, they said, ‘Hey, you're a creative guy at NFL Films,'" said Brian Murray, an Emmy-winning cinematographer mentored by Steve Sabol, the late, revered NFL Films president,...

Sports never made a case for Kinect — but Kinect never made one for sports

Say this for Kinect: It fucking gave meaning to swear words. Kinect would get you a technical foul in NBA 2K. It could get you sacked from your managing gig in FIFA. Xbox's all-seeing, all-hearing sensor debuted to grand ideas and cooing tech demos four years ago, but Kinect's unique impact — in the mainstream video game genre best positioned to showcase it — was recognizing and penalizing the filth-flarn-filth people utter in the privacy of their homes. Last week Microsoft threw in the towel on Kinect as an integral component of the Xbox One, announcing it would offer a console bundle without the peripheral. Uncoupling the Kinect may be the right move, but it's another humbling U-turn for Microsoft, which abandoned ideas like mandatory Internet connections (or "check-ins") and a...

The latest must be the greatest in sports video games

Ask a fan for his favorite sports video game and you'll rarely get a current one. You may not even get one for a console still in production. Warhorses like NHL '94, Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball and the venerated NFL 2K5 come up a lot. Among mine are NCAA Football 2004, MVP Baseball 2005 and College Hoops 2K8, and none of those series even exist anymore. Nostalgia may have a lot to do with it. In present day, however, there still is the deep, demanding expectation that the latest edition be better than anything preceding it, if not everything ever attempted in that sport before. One might think an audience that cherishes old and long-since outdated titles might be more forgiving if the latest version of FIFA or NBA 2K isn't as compelling as a landmark entry earlier in the series. I share...

FIFA 14 not coming to Wii U because of predecessor's disappointing 'commercial results'

FIFA 14, this year's installment of Electronic Arts' soccer franchise, will not be released for Wii U because sales of FIFA 13 were "disappointing," a representative from EA told Eurogamer. "Six months ago FIFA 13 was a launch title on Wii U," the representative said. "Although the game featured FIFA's award-winning HD gameplay and innovative new ways to play, the commercial results were disappointing. We have decided not to develop FIFA 14 on Wii U." EA published several games for Wii U after its launch last November, including FIFA 13 and Madden NFL 13. Earlier this month, EA confirmed that Madden NFL 25 would not launch on the system, but said that the company has "a strong partnership with Nintendo." The news follows in the wake of EA spokesperson Jeff Brown's recent statement...

EA has 'no games in development for the Wii U,' spokesman says

Electronic Arts isn't currently developing any games for the Wii U, EA spokesperson Jeff Brown told Kotaku. EA published several games for Nintendo's console since its November 2012 launch, including FIFA 13, Madden NFL 13, Mass Effect 3: Special Edition and Need for Speed Most Wanted, but its studios have nothing in the pipeline right now. "We have no games in development for the Wii U currently," Brown said, but he didn't rule out future Wii U development, according to Kotaku. Earlier this month, EA announced that Madden NFL 25 would not make its way to the Wii U in 2013, while reiterating that the company has "a strong partnership with Nintendo." EA DICE's technical director Johan Andersson recently explained that the Frostbite engine, which powers games like those in the...

The Xbox 360 version of NCAA Football 14, the upcoming installment in EA Tiburon's college football franchise, will include Kinect commands in offline modes, a representative from EA told Polygon. EA informed Joystiq this morning that the game would have Kinect functionality similar to its implementation in the Madden series. Polygon reached out to EA and received a statement confirming the Kinect commands. "Functionality will be similar to what we did in Madden NFL 13 last year, and will focus on pre-play voice commands for things like audibles, hurry-up offense, etc.," the representative said. NCAA Football 14 is set for release July 9, 2013 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. For more on the game and what the developers are doing to spice up the presentation, be sure to read Polygon's...
