Helldivers staging global PlayStation war for humanity

Helldivers is a cross-buy top-down cooperative sci-fi shooter planned for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PS Vita, but there is one endeavor that unites all versions. Developer Arrowhead Games is planning a global meta-game for the good-humored title, in which all of the world's players attempt to stave off an alien invasion. The game notches up points for every game that is played, and they all contribute to 'The Galactic War.' "The Galactic War is played out over two months," said Sony San Mateo producer Mark Rogers. "Every game that a player plays counts towards this war which is fought on three fronts against three enemies at the same time." Every two months, the game is reset. "If the entire community manages to defeat the aliens, the war begins again but this time at a higher...

Hands-on with Magicka: Wizard Wars, which hits Steam Early Access today

Paradox Interactive's spellcasting, player-versus-player action game is a rethought sequel to its predecessor, Magicka. Like fans of the original would expect, it includes dozens of spells that players can mix and match to obliterate their opponents. But Magicka: Wizard Wars is a refinement, and some new changes are in store for old and new fans alike. Polygon spent some hands-on time with a pre-alpha version of Magicka: Wizard Wars recently and learned from its developer just what's in store, what Paradox hopes to accomplish through the Steam Early Access community and how the Street Fighter series wound up being one of the game's major influences. Magicka: Wizard Wars arms you with eight different elements from which players can create dozens upon dozens of destructive spells. The...

Magicka: Wizard Wars streamlines the PvP experience of the original and makes it 'twitchier'

In a demo shown to Polygon at the Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco, lead designer David Nisshagen and the EVP of Paradox North, John Hargelid said Wizard Wars is something the studio created for the Magicka PvP community. "When PvP was introduced to the original Magicka, so many players just lit up. It was like, 'Oh! This is what we've been waiting for!'" Hargelid said. "So we really wanted to give the PvP community a full, dedicated game experience." Cue Magicka: Wizard Wars, an online PvP game that removes the campaign and puzzle modes from the original Magicka and focuses on the PvP aspect. The game features the original "Robes" from Magicka — personality-filled, faceless, androgynous wizards who dash around maps casting spells, attacking, counter-attacking and blocking...

Paradox CEO acknowledges poor launches, promises 'fewer and better titles' in the future

Paradox Interactive CEO Frederik Wester acknowledged that his company has launched buggy, unfinished or nearly unplayable games in the past, and promised better quality control in the future, in an interview with GameSpy. The trend of substandard launches will end with 2012's Gettysburg: Armored Warfare, said Wester. That alternate-history shooter, which was developed by Radioactive Software and published by Paradox, launched in March to a poor reception: Reviewers slammed the game for being broken. "That was terrible. We did not do our homework," said Wester. He added that Paradox "learned a lot from that release" — the publisher canceled four games over the summer, after the bungled launch of Gettysburg, because they weren't up to par. The reason for shoddy launches in Paradox's...

'Magicka' takes a page from London Olympics for new DLC

Magicka is drawing inspiration from the Olympic Games in its latest content drop for its Challenge and Versus and mode. The "WOOT Tournament" DLC, set to debut tomorrow, features four new PVP maps, three new challenge maps and new items and spells for competing wizards. Many of the new features draw inspiration from – but are not directly connected to – the Olympics, such as the Mustketball Dunker, which is a gun that fires explosives, and the Wave maneuver. The DLC will be free for all Magicka players.
