Max Payne 3 review: bullet time machine

Rockstar Games is releasing Max Payne 3 almost nine years after Max Payne 2: that was a year before Halo 2, and Half-Life 2; three years before Gears of War; six years before Uncharted 2. It's been almost that long since original developers Remedy Entertainment sold the rights to the series to Rockstar and moved on to Alan Wake. So here we are, in 2012, and Rockstar Vancouver has finally delivered Max Payne 3. The questions are myriad: how can Rockstar make a sequel to a series so intimately linked to the sensibilities of Remedy? How can a company not known for its action chops follow up a series known for its twitch, arcadey action? And how in the hell can a game move through almost nine years of third-person shooter evolution and still find relevance? But through smart combat...

Max Payne 3 Deathmatch Made in Heaven DLC coming Jan. 22

Max Payne 3's final downloadable content pack, Deathmatch Made in Heaven, will release for all available platforms on Jan. 22, Rockstar Games announced via press release. Deathmatch Made in Heaven will feature both co-op and competitive modes, along with new weapons, items, bursts, achievements and tropies. The DLC will cost $9.99, or for Xbox 360 owners, 800 Microsoft points. PlayStation 3 owners in Europe, however, should expect the content on Jan. 30. Rockstar Season Pass owners will get Deathmatch Made in Heaven for free. Max Payne 3 released on May 15, 2012.

Inside Gaming Awards winners include Halo 4, Fez

The 4th annual Machinima Inside Gaming Awards took place yesterday in Hollywood, Calif., with Halo 4, Fez and Mass Effect 3 sweeping the largest number of the 17 available awards, according to a recent press release. The award show streamed live through MachinimaLive.com. 343 Industries's Halo 4 won Game of the Year, Best Competitive Multiplayer and Best Sound Design, while Polytron's puzzle platformer, Fez, landed two awards with Best Original Score and Best Indie Game. Mass Effect 3, BioWare's title, won two awards as well for Best Co-Operative Multiplayer and Best Game Cinematography. Max Payne 3's Painful Memories DLC pack puts four fan faces in the game

Four lucky Rockstar Games Social Club members will be digitally immortalized in the upcoming Max Payne 3 downloadable content pack Painful Memories. As part of a promotion for the game's multiplayer, the four Max Payne fans have had their likenesses digitized for the role of the De Marcos Abroad faction. The fans will play members of the De Marco crime family and will come to Max Payne 3 with in-game wardrobe options ranging "from beach attire to New Jersey goombah business chic," Rockstar says. Max Payne 3 Painful Memories Pack DLC set to release Dec. 4 with new maps, items and weapons

Max Payne 3's Painful Memories Pack DLC is headed for a Dec. 4 release, bringing with it new maps, items and weapons, according to a post on developer Rockstar Games' website. The DLC, which is "[i]nspired by the grisly shootouts from Max's past," will bring four new multiplayer maps, including the Roscoe Street Subway from the original Max Payne. It will also feature weapons like the UAR-21 assault rifle, avatars and items. Finally, it introduces the Hangover Burst, which causes multiplayer enemies to respawn with blurred vision as well as reduced stamina and health. Windows 8 Marketplace will sell 'mature' games after all

Microsoft is changing its guidelines for content on the Windows 8 Markeplace after the original guidelines barred developers and publishers from uploading content rated "mature" onto the store. Under section 6.2 of the original guidelines, the Windows 8 Marketplace did not give certification to games or apps with a rating over PEGI 16, ESRB Mature or a corresponding rating under other ratings systems. This meant that games like Dishonored, Max Payne 3, Spec Ops: The Line, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and others would not be available in the Marketplace in territories like Europe, where all of the above games are rated PEGI 18. Unlock Halloween skull masks in Max Payne 3 this Friday

Players will be able to unlock Halloween-themed masks for Max Payne 3 if they tune into Rockstar Games' Social Club multiplayer event this Friday, Oct 26. The Social Club multiplayer event will run from 4 p.m - 7 p.m. ET and players will be able to join in on any platform. If players have played at least one full game in the Oct. 26 Social Club Playlist, two unlockable Halloween masks will be available from the player's Head Items section under Multiplayer Loadouts. The first mask, unlocked to all Social Club Playlisters during the event is the Demonic Skull. The Day of the Dead Skull is unlocked for all active members of Founder Crews. The Hostage Negotiation pack for Max Payne 3 is one of the biggest additions to the game's multiplayer, and today Rockstar released some tips for getting players through the pack's four new maps. The developer shared high-definition overhead looks at the four new maps available for Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Payne Killer modes. Favela Heights is a multi-tiered map, dotted with watertowers for sniping opportunities and rooftop pathways for scurrying out of danger. Estadio do Galatians sets players in a busy stadium on game day and offers close-quarters combat in luxury seating boxes and locker rooms. Max Payne 3 'Hostage Negotiation Pack' coming October 30th on all platforms

Max Payne 3's "Hostage Negotiation Pack" is finally coming on October 30th to all platforms, Rockstar Games announced today. The pack will be available for 800 Microsoft Points ($10) on Xbox Live, $9.99 on PlayStation Network and PC, and is free for Rockstar Pass holders. The pack adds four new multiplayer maps as well as new items, weapons, and a new avatar faction. "Hostage Negotiation" missed its original September release window, with Rockstar officially announcing the pack's delay earlier this month.
