Metro Redux launches Aug. 26 on PC, PS4, Xbox One

Metro Redux, the remastered bundle of the two existing games in the Metro series, is set for release Aug. 26 in North America on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One, publisher Deep Silver announced today. The package is scheduled to be available Aug. 29 in Europe. Linux and SteamOS versions are also on the way, although they'll be released at a later date. Deep Silver confirmed the existence of Metro Redux in March, and officially announced it in May. The collection consists of remastered and reworked versions of 2010's Metro 2033 and 2013's Metro: Last Light. Series developer 4A Games made Metro Redux in-house, with the goal of delivering experiences beyond mere up-rezzed versions of those games, according to Deep Silver. Both Metro 2033 and Last Light will look better in Redux...

Metro Redux could serve as a roadmap to the franchise's future

Speaking with Polygon at E3 2014, global brand manager Huw Beynon said, "[Metro Redux] was the perfect opportunity to get some practice on the next-gen kits and learn the ins and outs of them." While Beynon wasn't willing to confirm that developer 4A Games is working on the next entry in the Metro series, he coyly hinted that the next-gen development experience "might come in handy for something in the future." And that experience could include major increases to the quality of the games as seen in Metro: Last Light. "We're the first to admit that Metro 2033 ... It was certainly a little rough around the edges at times in terms of the actual gameplay," Beynon said. "For some people, that was a dealbreaker." According to Beynon, the changes made in Metro Redux — even as simple as the...

Metro 2033 and Last Light get remastered Redux on PS4, Xbox One and PC this summer

Developer 4A Games is re-releasing its two Metro games — 2010's Metro 2033 and last year's Metro: Last Light — and bundling them into a single package: a "true director's cut" of those titles called Metro Redux. Created in-house at the Ukrainian studio by some 80 people over the course of a year, Metro Redux for Linux, Mac, PlayStation 4, SteamOS, Windows PC and Xbox One will be a "complete remaster," according to publisher Deep Silver. The original Metro 2033 has been rebuilt in the engine developed for its sequel, Last Light, according to Deep Silver brand manager Huw Beynon, bringing with it a host of improvements that affect its visuals and gameplay. Metro 2033 is getting an all-new lighting engine and performs better on lower end PC hardware, Beynon said. It will also borrow a...

4A Games is moving to Malta to work on a new Metro game

Metro 2033 developer 4A Games is relocating from its original hub in the Ukraine to Malta while developing a new and currently unannounced title in the Metro series, the company announced. According to the developer, Malta's position as a state in the European Union will help the company compete at an international level. While 4A will continue to keep its Ukraine office, the new Malta studio will become its headquarters. Likewise, managers will begin making the move to the new building. "Malta offers fantastic incentives for game development, and we are confident 4A Games will be able to attract the very best talent from Ukraine, Malta and beyond," head of business development Dean Sharpe said. Co-founder Andrew Prokhorov added: "This marks the start of a new chapter for 4A Games....

Metro series coming to next-gen consoles, Deep Silver confirms

Metro developer 4A Games is bringing the franchise to new consoles as Metro Redux, publisher Deep Silver announced today. The Italian site Everyeye posted images over the weekend of a purported PlayStation 4 and Xbox One game called Metro Redux. According to Everyeye — which has since taken the images down — the title would reportedly consist of remastered versions of 2010's Metro 2033 (screenshot above) and 2013's Metro: Last Light, as well as their downloadable add-ons. Both games are set in the post-apocalyptic universe created by the Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky, who started it all in 2005 with the novel Metro 2033. Instead of declining comment, Deep Silver confirmed a project called Metro Redux. "Is Metro Redux real? Yes. We never made any secret of 4A's desire to bring...

Why game developers are joining mass demonstrations in Ukraine

For the last few days, Prokhorov (pictured with 4A colleagues earlier today, he is second from left) has been among the hundreds of thousands of protesters in Kiev's Independence Square, seeking to defy their government's rejection of a closer integration with the European Union. He has been joined by many of Ukraine's game developers. Prokhorov has been attending the protests along with workmates from 4A Games and other games companies in Kiev. He has been using social media and texts to mobilize his network of contacts, many of whom are already committed to making their views heard. "I just posted information on my Facebook page, that I am going to the city center and anyone is welcome to join," he told Polygon. "Also I called my friends and acquaintances. Many of them have already...

This is what Valve's Steam Machine prototype looks like

Valve's Steam Machine prototype is designed to fit right into a living room, both from a size and design perspective, so it's not surprising that it looks like a video game console, as seen in a hands-on report from The Verge. According to Valve, the company produced its prototype in order to give prospective third-party hardware manufacturers a model for their own Steam Machines. The SteamOS-based computer is designed to fit standard computer hardware of varying specifications — for the 300 prototypes Valve's shipping to Steam users later this year, the graphics cards run the gamut from an Nvidia GTX660 to a Titan — into a console-size box that won't look out of place in a typical living room entertainment center. Valve built its Steam Machines to prioritize cooling, with plastic...
