'Doctor Who' is coming to Minecraft on Xbox 360

The Twelfth Doctor, five of his colleagues, their companions and those treacherous Daleks are part of a Doctor Who-themed pack of avatars coming to Minecraft's Xbox 360 Edition beginning in September. BBC Worldwide, Microsoft and Mojang, the makers of Minecraft, reached an agreement to deliver multiple Doctor Who-themed skin packs to the game, releasing after the broadcast episodes of the upcoming Series 8. The first pack costs $2.99 (£1.99, €2.85 and AU$2.95) and will include a character inspired by the Twelfth Doctor, plus five other Doctors, their on-screen companions, and the Daleks. Subsequent releases will bring other characters from the past 50 years of the television series. Each will feature at least six Doctors.

A mad genius just created Minecraft — in Trials Fusion

We've seen other games created in Minecraft, now someone's gone and created Minecraft in Trials Fusion, of all games. Here's "TrialsCraft," an adaptation by PneumaticBog484 running on Xbox One. It's not a large-scale map — 17 blocks on a 10 x 10 x 10 creation grid, but the fundamentals of Minecraft gameplay are there. See for yourself in this video above. PneumaticBog says the skill challenge has since been shared cross-platform, so users can find it on any platform, PC included. Want to see something else neat, by the same guy? It's "FPS Target Range II," whose wall-running evokes Titanfall. It features 10 custom weapons — with reload animations — and 30 hidden targets on the course.

A guided tour of the 1 KB hard drive built inside Minecraft

You see a lot of crazy stuff built in Minecraft. With tens of millions of copies sold, the game has spawned a closet industry of builders, hackers and tinkerers. Minecraft communities have reconstructed the mines of Moria. They've placed a steampunk city atop a giant tortoise. Minecraft is even being used to teach. The possibilities inside Minecraft seem endless. One user, Cody Littley, went a step further recently. He made a hard drive inside Minecraft. Without any third-party crafting aides, he built one kilobyte of read-write storage. He joined me for a guided tour.

Minecraft creator steps up to the Ice Bucket Challenge for a cold hit

The Ice Bucket Challenge is making its way through the gaming industry and has soaked another participant: Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson. The Ice Bucket Challenge dares someone to take a bucket of ice water over their head or donate money toward fighting ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease (though many opt to do both). Once challenged, a person only has 24 hours to fulfill the dare. Notable participants in the past include Martha Stewart, Conan O'Brien, Chris Pratt, Steven Spielberg and Nathan Fillion. Persson's challenge came by way of Elon Musk, CEO and CTO of SpaceX and chief product architect of Tesla Motors; Musk's five sons selected Persson, Tony Hawk and Johnny Depp. Musk himself was nominated by Bill Gates, who was called out by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. ...

The Hollywood super agency behind Respawn, Obsidian and Turtle Rock

Inside CAA, the Hollywood super agency behind Respawn, Obsidian and Turtle Rock By Matt Leone @LattMeone Share Tweet You can see it from down the street, taking up a block of Los Angeles' Avenue of the Stars. The valet line out front, the glass-walled atrium, the men in sport coats and women in oversized sunglasses, the reception desk off to the side where visitors wait until called upstairs. Creative Artists Agency's headquarters wasn't designed for subtlety. Often called the Death Star, its footprint alone can intimidate outsiders. It's like visiting Gattaca, says Turtle Rock Studios Co-Founder Phil Robb. Founded in 1975, CAA is one of the world's largest talent agencies, representing actors (Tom Cruise, George Clooney), directors (Steven Spielberg, James...

The guidelines for making a game a week, every week

Can you be creative without constraints? Adriel Wallick, better known in the game jam community under the moniker MsMinotaur, has been making one game a week, every week, for the past 38 weeks. Her answer to the question above, following a period of pure creative freedom which resulted in a lot of time browsing Reddit forums and not much in the way of finished projects, is no. Speaking at this year's GDC Europe in Cologne, Wallick described the issue of re-educating herself about the creative process as an independent developer. The result is a four-part set of guidelines for conquering the fear, apathy and "empty Unity projects" that often result when a hopeful indie developer has nothing but ideas and free time. While independent developers may feel they stand in the shadow of...

Learn how to copy, and know when to steal

There's nothing wrong with copying the work of other games, or other genres, the important thing is to know why you're copying, and do something interesting with your own product. "Look at the game you are thinking of copying, the one that got all those YouTube views, and look at why it worked, the decisions and choices, the objectives," Volume and Thomas Was Alone developer Mike Bithell wrote in a recent blog post. "How the surface of the game achieved the outcome, and then come up with something different that may duplicate some of that success." He describes a meeting where his then boss asked how to make a Minecraft game, and instead Bithell sat down and made a list of what Minecraft did well. He was focused on why it was a success, instead of simply looking to rip off the topical...

Yogscast's game failed, but this is why the game that fans are actually getting didn't

Developed by a team of 25 people at Nerd Kingdom, TUG is an open-world sandbox survival game that's openly inspired by Minecraft but also looking to expand that formula with a unique art style and evolving design. Sound familiar? That's basically the exact same pitch as Yogventures.  And in fact, TUG was Kickstarted as well. The only difference is that TUG is already playable through Early Access on Steam and already receiving largely positive reviews from a growing player base. How did TUG succeed, then, where Yogventures failed? Nerd Kingdom founder Peter Salinas says that step one was going in prepared. "There was a detail I think a lot of people missed on our Kickstarter," he says. "[The Kickstarter] was a lot about getting needed art support to make our already-developed...

Job ad says Maxis is working on a new franchise, cites Minecraft as model

Maxis appears ready to begin work on a new franchise, according to a job listing that cites LittleBigPlanet, Minecraft and Disney Infinity as models. It could figure to be big news as, since its acquisition by Electronic Arts more than 15 years ago, Maxis has begun only two new series: The Sims, the very profitable, long-running lifestyle series, and Spore, an ambitious but critically panned biology simulator that spawned few expansions and a partial sequel, 2011's Darkspore. The job listing is for a senior designer and says the person will work on "a new unannounced Maxis product." Maxis is looking for someone with experience in "deeply social multiplayer games, such as MMOs," and tips off that crafting and RPG leveling play a large role in this game. Oh, and this game will involve...
