Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition saves will transfer to Xbox One version

Save data for the Xbox 360 edition of Mojang's Minecraft will transfer to the forthcoming Xbox One version of the game, Microsoft's head of Xbox Phil Spencer confirmed today. "After months of teaming up with Mojang, we can confirm that Minecraft [Xbox 360] Edition will save transfer to Xbox One Edition," Spencer said on Twitter, promising "more news soon" about the console-to-console transfer. Minecraft for Xbox One was announced at last year's E3 and is expected to be released this year. Discussion about Xbox 360 to Xbox One save transfers has been going on since last summer. Mojang has similar plans to support transfer of Minecraft saves from the PlayStation 3 version to the PlayStation 4 version. Microsoft announced earlier this month that the Xbox 360 edition of Minecraft has s...

The entire country of Denmark has been recreated in Minecraft

Denmark has been totally recreated in sandbox game Minecraft, making it the first country able to be explored in the game "in the ratio 1:1," the Danish Broadcasting Corporation reports. The map is the work of Simon Kokkendorf and Thorbjørn Nielsen of Geodatastyrelsen, the Danish Geodata Agency, who reportedly pulled public data about roads, buildings, elevation models and more. Dynamite has been disabled on the map to prevent serious modifications. "This means that all of Denmark is now a virtual world in the ratio 1:1 inside the Minecraft," the mod's description (translated with Google) reads, "thus you can freely move around in Denmark, find your own residential area, to build and tear down as you can in whichever any other Minecraft world." You can view the Minecraft version of...

Minimum offers multiplayer shooting without the frills

But it's actually a work of intense design. Getting something simple to look sophisticated is the magic trick of minimalism. In Minimum, various shades of gray and beige work with stark, straight lines and tiny splashes of color to produce that rare thing, a combat world that looks fresh and interesting. The game itself borrows from classic multiplayer team-shooters of the 1990s as well as more modern MOBAs, creating frenetic but tactical gunplay along barrier-dotted lanes. There is a heavy emphasis on power progression inside individual games. Minimum is due to be released for Windows PC on Steam Early Access in the next few weeks. Published by Atari, it's been developed by Human Head. The game was originally created by defunct developer Timegate (F.E.A.R Extraction Point, Aliens:...

Minecraft Realms now available in North America

Minecraft Realms, Mojang's private-server service for Minecraft, is now available in North America, the studio announced today. The service gives Minecraft players the opportunity to pay a subscription fee for Mojang to host a private server for a small group of people, like family and friends — as many as 20 individuals. Minecraft Realms servers are available 24/7, and owners have the ability to roll back the world to an earlier restore point in the case of a catastrophe. Subscriptions start at $13 per month, and the service is currently available only for the Windows PC version of Minecraft. Mojang debuted Minecraft Realms in Sweden last December. With today's launch in North America, it is now available in the Åland Islands, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, the Cayman Islands, Croatia,...

Minecraft may hit PS4 and PS Vita Q2/Q3 this year

Mojang aims to launch Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition and Minecraft: PS Vita Edition in either Q2 or Q3 of this year, Mojang's Owen Hill told Polygon. "Yes — we are planning to release on PS4 and Vita at around Q2-Q3 this year," Hill wrote. "We're not able to share more specific dates yet though, sorry. We'd rather be vague than disappoint people! They probably won't be released simultaneously. We're going to release on each format as soon as it's ready." Mojang is still working out the details of cross-buy/upgrade options for the PlayStation editions, Hill added, mentioning that more news about it is forthcoming. Hill wrote in the comments section of the European PlayStation blog that it may be possible for owners of the digital version to receive a discount for the Vita release. H...

Check out Minecraft's upcoming terrain creator in action

An update headed to the PC version of Minecraft will allow players to create their own terrain down to the grittiest of details, according to a video recently shared by Team Mojang on YouTube. The video above demonstrates the terrain creation feature, which will hit with Minecraft update 1.8. The feature includes 16 different sliders for players to tinker with when building their environment — including biome depth, height and weight as well as the field's depth of noise. Players can use these sliders to play with these variables or input values directly, giving absolute control to creators in terms of how structures will be generated. According to the YouTube description, Mojang will provide seven pre-set terrain options in the update that they feel players will find "interesting,"...

How Minecraft is helping the United Nations improve the world

"The main thing for me is that it changes the relationship between professionals, like architects and urban planners, and ordinary people," said Pontus Westerberg, of the United Nations Human Settlements Program. "It gives power back to ordinary people." The United Nations Human Settlements Program was established in 1978 with the idea of promoting socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. To do this, UN-Habitat officials say it's important that all countries have a national urban plan. Something, Westerberg said, that is "really rare." That plan needs to include space for public space as a first priority, he said. Public space is so important because without it a city can't function correctly. Public space promotes social inclusion and diversity, improves urban...

Children are using Minecraft to redesign the real world

Minecraft is at the center of real-world re-design initiative Block by Block: a partnership between the United Nations Human Settlements Program and game developer Mojang that currently aims to construct a new design at Plaza Tlaxcoaque in Mexico City. Block by Block is a four year program that aims to allow young people to design and upgrade 300 public spaces by 2016. The initiative, which began in 2012, has resulted in a number of pilot projects across the globe, with the first pilot project in Kibera — an informal settlement in Nairobi — already underway. Other projects are taking place in Tikok, one of the poorest slums in Haiti, as well as Rwanda, India, Kenya and Ethipia. "For the Aldea Digital competition we have created 500 versions of Plaza Tlaxcoaque on a server," writes...
