Monaco: What's Yours is Mine review: best-laid plans

Forget that an armed guard or trap is in a given room, and it's lights out You and up to three teammates pick a character from a lineup of cons — each with their own special ability — and jump into Monaco's loosely story-based campaign. You'll take your crew through 30-some stages by the end of the game, each furthering the noir-meets-Ocean's 11 (think Frank Sinatra, not George Clooney) narrative bit by bit. Stages are multi-level mazes packed with locked doors, overactive security systems and dopey (yet lethal) guards. It's your job to get in, fulfill your objectives (generally by grabbing specific assets or rescuing someone) and escape without dying. This requires practice and often a whole lot of trial and error. You'll need to memorize the stage layouts as entire sections of the...

Monaco creator's new game Armada will invite the masses into a controller-based RTS

The game went through an extended development time of over three years, but the final release on Mac, Linux, Windows PC and Xbox 360 was a hit. Andy Schatz, Monaco's creator, is now setting his sights on another genre. "With Monaco, we took an old school genre (Stealth), we simplified the controls, and then we built an incredibly complex game that could be played at high and low skill levels alike," Schatz explained in the blog post that introduces the game. "I want to do the same with the real-time strategy genre."Enter Armada. The controller will set you free "Learning the basic mechanics of Monaco is easy, but to be good at the game, players have to study the levels, understand the behaviors of the players and the enemies, practice and optimize. By simplifying the RTS control...

Austin Wintory wants supporters, not just fans

Talking at DICE in Las Vegas yesterday, the musician and scorer of Journey, Monaco and The Banner Saga said, "I don't like the idea of the word 'fan'. If people are fans of a piece of music that is great." But he said he did not want people to buy his music "just because it has a name on it, which is meaningless." Wintory was celebrating the digital culture that allows composers to create and share music in ways that were impossible even a few years ago. He said that the days when composing music was restricted to a highly educated elite are over. He shared an anecdote about the commercial release of the official soundtrack to Journey, and how he had encouraged people to post the whole album on YouTube. For most copyright holders, this would have been anathema, an invitation to lose...

Monaco busting onto Linux on Monday with free new content

Pocketwatch Games is set to unleash its action-stealth game Moncao: What's Yours Is Mine onto Linux "along with a ton of free/new content" Oct. 21, according to a post on the game's official Facebook page. When Monaco launched on Mac in July — along with Steam Workshop and level editor support — players who bought the Windows PC version of the title were able download the Mac release for free. Dubbed "The Mole's Workshop," the level editor allows gamers to create custom Monaco missions and maps and share them with friends. Monaco launched on Steam for Windows PC on April 24. The XBLA version was delayed a day before its launch when a bug was discovered that disconnected four-player matches and was later released on the console May 10. Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine's XBLA delay 'unquestionably hurt' sales

Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine's delayed Xbox Live Arcade release "unquestionably hurt" its sales, founder of Pocketwatch Games, Andy Schatz, wrote on a Reddit post, saying he was disappointed by sales on the console. "I was never depending on the Xbox being our primary revenue generator, but I was very disappointed in Xbox sales nonetheless," Schatz wrote. "We put a ton of effort porting the game, and to have that effort be largely wasted was really disappointing. OTOH, I don't think the demo was particularly strong... so it could be that the game wouldn't have done better on Xbox even if it had a simultaneous launch (though IMO it would have performed at least twice as well). We had to submit two patches, and luckily they had already relaxed the charges for that process about a month...

Users also have access to the same tools used to create the game's original campaign missions and stories. At the time of writing, almost 200 custom Monaco maps have been created and submitted by beta testers using The Mole's Workshop. A comprehensive guide on how to create Monaco maps is available on the Steam Community website. An XBLA version of Monaco was expected alongside the...

Monaco developers wanted to add competitive Cops and Robbers, Thief vs. Thief modes

The developers of Monaco: What's Yours is Mine wanted to include two competitive multiplayer modes in the game but cut them because of issues with balance and quality, said creator Andy Schatz in a Reddit AMA today. Asked about features that developer Pocketwatch Games was forced to cut, Schatz mentioned modes called Cops and Robbers and Thief vs. Thief. According to Schatz, both modes were playable, but the developers found that they weren't well-balanced in the existing levels. "We were going to have to build entirely new content tailored to them in order to make them feel at the same level of quality," he said. From Schatz's description, it sounds like Cops and Robbers was closer to release-worthy as a game type than Thief vs. Thief, although he noted, "There are some [interesting]...

Monaco coming to Xbox Live Arcade May 10

Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine will finally launch for Xbox Live Arcade May 10, according to a tweet from the game's official Twitter account. The game was initially scheduled for launch April 24 alongside its Steam release, but was delayed the day before due to an "issue." A second patch was issued shortly after to address another bug that would disconnect players during online play. Speaking with Edge Online, creator Andy Schatz said that he would rather have fans be disappointed by the delay than upset with the game's bugs. "...If we had released the game in a state where a bug really broke it for 4-player matches, people wouldn't be disappointed, they'd be upset," Schatz said. "And rightfully so, because they paid money for a game that doesn't work. I'd rather have disappointed...
