NBA 2K14 penalizes your profanity in an effort to make online gaming more civilized

NBA 2K14 will give you a technical foul for using profanity within earshot of the PlayStation Camera or Kinect because the developers wanted to give players a "more civilized online environment," a representative for publisher 2K Sports told Polygon today. In basketball, a referee will call a technical foul on a player, coach or any other member of the team for a non-contact infraction; in most cases, it's called for unsportsmanlike conduct, such as cursing at a referee or another player. In the NBA, a technical results in a single free throw for the opposing team, and a player is ejected if he accrues two technical fouls in one game. You can see NBA 2K14's voice-activated technical fouls in action in the video above from YouTube user randomfrankp. He flies into a rage after being...

MLG Pro Points system ranks players, will determine seeding

Major League Gaming's new Pro Points system will track players' participation and performance for eSports competitions across a wide variety of games, the company announced today. The Pro Points setup will rank top players across different arenas and tiers, depending on the game in question. MLG will award points in Pro Circuit events, online tournaments and online ladders. Pro Points will be used to signify the top 2 percent of players in a particular MLG arena — no more than 100 players per arena — as MLG Pro Players. And MLG will eventually use Pro Point rankings to seed all competitions, including online tournaments; the first seeding based on Pro Points will come at the Pro Championship set for Nov. 22-24 in Columbus, Ohio. Pro Points is currently in beta; the first tournament to...

Take-Two quarterly revenue drops 37%, still 'better than expected'

Publisher Take-Two Interactive reported "better-than-expected" results for the first quarter of its 2014 fiscal year today, and although the company lost money in the quarter, it expects very positive results for the second quarter and full year. Take-Two's revenues for the quarter ending June 30, 2013, totaled $142.7 million, a 36.9 percent year-over-year decline that was expected because last year, the first quarter of the company's 2013 fiscal year contained two major releases in Max Payne 3 and Spec Ops: The Line. The company recorded a first-quarter 2014 net loss of $61.9 million, an improvement on the $110.8 million loss it reported one year ago. That net loss included a $29.6 million "impairment of capitalized software development cost" related to an in-development 2K title. T...

NBA 2K13/MLB 2K13 Combo Pack launching March 5 for $79.99 on Xbox 360, PS3

NBA 2K13 and the upcoming MLB 2K13 will be bundled into a $79.99 "Combo Pack" that launches March 5 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, publisher Take-Two Interactive announced today. They are the two remaining sports games released annually under the 2K Sports label. MLB 2K13, which also launches March 5 on Xbox 360 and PS3, will be available for $59.99, so the Combo Pack gives 2K Sports fans two full games at a $40 discount. 2K Sports did the same thing last year, with an MLB 2K12/NBA 2K12 Combo Pack. That package was available only on Xbox 360, and sold for $69.99. The $10 price increase this time around can be attributed to NBA 2K13, which still sells for its full retail price, $59.99; by the time 2K Sports announced the 2012 Combo Pack a year ago, the price of NBA 2K12 had dropped to...

Take-Two reports 76 percent jump in Q3 revenue led by NBA 2K13 sales

Take-Two announced strong results today for the third quarter of its 2013 fiscal year, reporting a 76 percent year-over-year increase in net revenue led primarily by 4.5 million units shipped of NBA 2K13. For the quarter ending Dec. 31, 2012, Take-Two tallied net revenue of $415.8 million, a 76 percent jump over the $236.3 million of revenue for the same period in 2011. Net income for the quarter increased by 399 percent to $70.9 million from $14.2 million. According to Take-Two, the three "strongest contributors" to revenue in the quarter were NBA 2K13, Borderlands 2 and catalog sales of games including Grand Theft Auto 4 and Red Dead Redemption. NBA 2K13 Wii U producer wishes fewer developers would build their games around a console's feature set

A producer on NBA 2K13 for Wii U, Rob Jones, says it's important for developers to analyze their games to see how they can be enhanced by new hardware, rather than building their games around the hardware's feature set. Speaking to Polygon, Jones says that when the development team at Visual Concepts first received Wii U development kits, they asked themselves what they would want on the console's GamePad if they could play NBA 2K13 on the Wii U. "One of the main things, and it's a philosophy I wish more people would take, is not trying to build your game around what the feature set of the hardware is, but analyze how your customer has interacted with the game up to that point and see if the hardware's feature set can further enhance that," Jones says. "Because you've been successful...
