NBA 2K poaches NBA Live designer

2K Sports' NBA 2K team has lured away one of the designers on NBA Live, a former professional basketball player who parlayed a community advisory role on the series' unreleased 2012 edition into a full-time job. Good Game Bro reported both the departure of Scott O'Gallagher, (above, center) an associate designer, back in June and now confirmation that he has joined 2K Sports. O'Gallagher was visibly part of NBA Live 14's development, troubled though it may have been. He frequently conducted developer videos and streaming sessions during NBA Live 14's launch and helped lead the messaging campaign for an omnibus update that helped correct a number of major deficiencies, though it came three months after release. O'Gallagher, who played for Warner Pacific College in Oregon (a Division...

EA: This isn't a make-or-break year for NBA Live

Rumor has it that Electronic Arts is approaching the final year of a licensing agreement with the NBA, but even if that is the case, EA chief operating officer Peter Moore says continuing the game doesn't depend on some miracle breakthrough for the beleaguered series this year. "It's disappointing that we have allowed ourselves to get into this situation, and we're totally to blame," Moore told Game Informer at E3, "but we've got a great executive producer in Sean O'Brien. We're a company that has the resources to rally around it." Moore reiterated that "we're committed to the license. We're committed to the sport." NBA Live's troubles date to the cancellation of what was planned as a total remake, NBA Elite 11, in 2010. The series took a year off to sort out its troubles, tried to...

NBA Live 15's first look is a closeup of six stars

The official Facebook page for NBA Live 15 this morning offered the first glimpse at the improved graphics for EA Sports' basketball title. The six closeups of NBA stars Paul George, Tony Parker, Rajon Rondo, James Harden, Blake Griffin and Steph Curry send a message that NBA Live has addressed the underwhelming visuals of its next-gen debut last year. "We've scanned a majority of the league, and the new player heads, combined with refined player models and new lighting, makes our characters look really amazing," Sean O'Brien, the game's executive producer, wrote on the game's official blog on Thursday. "We've also seen some great progress with gameplay that makes the experience more realistic and, most importantly, more fun with a much better overall flow," he added. "We want teams...

Looking back on NBA 2K: The best sports game of the last generation

Over the course of the last console generation, 2K Sports' NBA 2K franchise became the top simulation sports game on the market. That's one of the reasons why it's so delightful to see NBA 2K14 contort itself to bring to life the basketball cataclysm that is the NBA Y2K series from SB Nation's Jon Bois. In essence, it's the NBA 2K version of his celebrated Breaking Madden series. Jon did it out of love, to pay homage to the last few years of 2K's basketball franchise — that's what he'll tell you, anyway. Must Read SB Nation: The slow, miserable death of basketball in NBA Y2K. Today, you can check out the season finale of NBA Y2K on SB Nation. It may signal the death of the NBA as we know it. Here at Polygon, sports fans Owen Good and Samit Sarkar decided to use...

A golden silence makes a great game better

After the officiating, television announcers are probably the most consistently despised participants in a major sporting event. Some guys are invulnerable. The Dodgers' Vin Scully is a good example. But long tenure and major assignments don't make a boothman bulletproof. I've never understood why Joe Buck rates such nonstop anger at everything he says, down to the prepositions. It seems to stem from an overreaction to an end zone celebration in 2005, and an under-reaction to just about everything else. But I can't pretend to be above it all when there are announcers like ESPN's Mike Patrick who drive me to the same level of resentment. Once someone says something tone deaf or insipid, particularly if it walks all over an important moment, or makes you not want to watch your favorite...

The Graded Generation: How sports did in their next-gen debut year

It may sound like damnation by faint praise to point this out, but every PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sports video game shares the core features of its PS3 and/or Xbox 360 ancestor. And bringing that up is a reminder how sports badly failed that modest expectation the last time a new console generation launched. Madden NFL 06 on the Xbox 360 was probably the most notorious example, not even having real announcers thanks to a contract snafu with Al Michaels and John Madden himself. You couldn't create or edit players in that game, a baseline feature going back years. FIFA neither launched with the 360 nor the PS3, and when FIFA 07 arrived on Xbox 360, some 20 leagues were absent. NCAA Football's first Xbox 360 version lacked the "Campus Legend" career mode on the Xbox and PS2 editions,...

How do sports video games handle scandals like Donald Sterling? They don't

James is factually correct. There is no place for Sterling, the despised owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, in their video game — the one whose cover James currently graces, as Jordan and Johnson did two years ago. No owner of any league franchise appears in NBA 2K14, nor in NBA Live 14. Without a doubt the weekend's number one story in sports, if not the nation at large, was the ugly, geriatric racism Sterling was caught espousing in a fight with his girlfriend. Sports video games present an idealized portrait of this business, and the scandals that can change much about the game and how its seen will never be mentioned within their virtual representations. Sterling embarrasses basketball with his presence and conduct, but that sense of shame won't be felt by the people who experience...

NBA Live 14's second patch will start to deliver on dev's promises

With NBA Live 14's second patch, which could arrive as early as Feb. 10, developer EA Tiburon will start to deliver on its promises about improving the game that was critically panned upon its launch last November. Shortly after NBA Live 14's debut as a launch title on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, executive producer Sean O'Brien addressed the game's poor reception in an open letter posted to the NBA Live website. O'Brien acknowledged that the team at developer EA Tiburon hadn't accomplished what they'd set out to achieve, and promised that the studio would make significant improvements and additions to the game. Tiburon released the first NBA Live 14 patch in December, and the studio noted that it was mostly a table-setter for the updates that would arrive later. The second patch will...
