Neverwinter servers rolled back seven hours after in-game currency exploit

Severs for Cryptic's MMO Neverwinter were rolled back seven hours over the weekend following an exploit that allowed players to amass billions in in-game currency, according to posts on the forums of publisher Perfect World Entertainment. The servers were taken down briefly yesterday for the rollback, erasing progress players' made between 8:20 a.m. and 3:20 p.m. ET. According to a post by Neverwinter community team manager Noel Holmes, a bug was discovered early Sunday morning by "a very small group of villainous Nashers," who used the bug to exploit the game's Open Beta Giveaway and Auction House to amass large amounts of Astral Diamonds. "Rather than let the malicious efforts of a few unsavory players linger and continually impact the game's economy and balance as we progress...

Neverwinter free-to-play microtransactions explained, full game available at no cost

Users who play Neverwinter, the upcoming free-to-play MMORPG from Cryptic Studios, will be able to access the game in its entirety at no cost, lead producer Andy Velasquez told Game Informer. The microtransaction-based title will include items such as armor and weapons that the player can purchase for real-world money; However, in-game content such as missions and maps will "absolutely not" be based around a system of microtransactions, says Velasquez. "You'll be able to access all of the classes without having to pay anything, and we will not be selling powers. It's not like you can just go to the store and buy a level 30 sword as a level 10 character. So we haven't talked too much in terms of the details yet but that's our high level approach," said Velasquez. According to data...

'Neverwinter' trailer shows the steely resolve of the Guardian Fighter

Neverwinter's Guardian Fighter class is capable of soaking up and dishing out a lot of damage, all using the upcoming MMO's fast-paced, action-oriented combat, as seen in the game's latest trailer. The Guardian Fighter is a class specialization pulled directly from Dungeons and Dragons: 4th Edition, using powers familiar to the tabletop game's players like "Tide of Iron" and "Cleave." The Guardian Fighter will need to use these abilities — along with his more powerful Encounter and Daily powers — to gain the attention of the team's enemies, and mitigate damage using his trusty shield. Clever Fighters can even use the powers to corral foes into advantageous clusters, making them more easily dispatched by the other members of the team. Check out the melee brawler's abilities in the...
