'New Super Mario Bros. 2' review: a vein of gold

The rewards are minimal, but the joy lies in the collection itself Coins have been the go-to collectible for Mario games all the way back to the original Mario Bros. in arcades, but as contemporary Mario games have become more liberal with handing out extra lives, the motivation for grabbing coins has vanished. That all changes at the start of New Super Mario Bros. 2 when you are given a goal of collecting one million coins, because ... well, because the game tells you it's your goal. No attempt at (or need for) contrived narrative justification here. While the rewards are minimal — a full playthrough won't bring you anywhere near the one million coin goal, and let's just say the final unlock for hitting it isn't worth the effort — the joy lies in...

Nintendo reports 52 percent increase of first-party 3DS software sales in the U.S.

Nintendo sold 2.1 million first-party Nintendo 3DS software units in the U.S. during the first 18 weeks of 2013, an increase of 52 percent over the same time period last year, Nintendo reports. Since its launch on April 24, Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins sold almost 94,000 physical and digital copies. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon sold more than 140,000 physical and digital units in April in the U.S.. The game sold more than 530,000 units in the U.S. since its launch on March 24. New Super Mario Bros. U for the Wii U, which launched in November last year, shifted 770,000 physical and digital units in the U.S. to date. Nintendo notes that data of physical sales of games in April are sourced from the NPD Group and digital downloads of games data is from Nintendo's internal sales...

Animal Crossing: New Leaf is the first 3DS game in Japan to surpass two million sales

Animal Crossing: New Leaf, sold two million copies in its first two months of release, making it the first Nintendo 3DS title to ever crack the two million mark, Japanese games industry magazine Famitsu reports via Tiny Cartridge. The game has sold 2.1 million units, which puts it ahead of other 3DS titles like Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Monster Hunter 3G, and New Super Mario Bros. 2. The sales for Animal Crossing: New Leaf also eclipse those of the best-selling PlayStation 3 game — Final Fantasy 13, which sold 1.9 million copies in Japan. Animal Crossing: New Leaf still falls behind the best-selling game on the Nintendo Wii — New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which sold 4.4 million copies in Japan.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 Mystery Adventures and Impossible DLC packs available

At a press event last week, Nintendo announced the latest two downloadable expansion packs for New Super Mario Bros. 2 on 3DS. These being the ninth and 10th packs available, if you need a refresher, you can catch up here. The Mystery Adventures pack opens up the game's structure with more exploration and side paths, while the Impossible pack offers a series of stages built to frustrate. Nintendo had the Impossible pack on display at the press event, and it almost stood up to its name. I'm far from a competitive Mario player, and I attempted the first stage about 20 times, getting three-quarters of the way through on my best try. A Nintendo representative on hand said it took him about two hours to initially clear the first stage. Both packs are available for download now.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 getting two more DLC level packs today

Two more level packs for New Super Mario Bros. 2, the Platform Panic Pack and Coin Challenge Pack C, will become available for purchase today for $2.50 each, Nintendo announced during this afternoon's Nintendo Direct presentation. Each pack contains three new levels; you can check out a trailer for both above. This is the third set of course packs for New Super Mario Bros. 2. Previous downloadable level packs include the Gold Classics Pack, which featured levels inspired by Super Mario Bros. games on the NES.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 DLC expands with classic Super Mario Bros. levels remade (update)

Nintendo has released a set of classic, NES era-inspired courses for the coin-drenched New Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan, according to a newly released edition of Nintendo Direct. The "Golden Classic Course Pack," now available in Japan, adds new courses based on levels from Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3. New Super Mario Bros. 2's latest downloadable add-on features rearranged, coin-stuffed versions of levels 1-1 and 1-2 from Super Mario Bros. for the NES, as well as one of Bowser's castle levels. Versions of Super Mario Bros. 3 levels 1-1 and 1-5 are also featured, as is a course based on the original Mario Bros. The DLC is currently being offered for free to Nintendo 3DS owners in Japan. Nintendo bringing Wii U, 3DS to malls across America

Nintendo will set up shop at malls nationwide during the holiday season, letting shoppers get hands-on experience with the Wii U and 3DS, the company announced today. Dubbed the "Nintendo Holiday Mall Experience," the setup will offer people the chance to try out Wii U games such as New Super Mario Bros. U, Nintendo Land, ZombiU, FIFA 13, Madden NFL 13, Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition, Just Dance 4, Darksiders 2 and Scribblenauts Unlimited. 3DS is the 'number one priority' this holiday, says Nintendo

Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL devices are Nintendo's "number one priority" this holiday season, the company's vice president of sales and marketing Scott Moffitt told VentureBeat. According to Moffitt, Nintendo expects to see shortages of its Wii U console over the holiday season; However, a robust lineup for the Nintendo 3DS device and a new focus on digital distribution are making the handheld platform the company's main priority. New Super Mario Bros 2 DLC announced today

New Super Mario Bros. 2 for 3DS will be getting two new downloadable content packs today, Nintendo announced in its Direct stream this morning. The two packs will consist of the Gold Mushroom Harvesting Pack which will have a difficulty of two out of five, and the Record Challenge B Pack which will have a difficulty of three out of five. Both packs will be available in Japan today from 8 a.m. ET. The North American Nintendo Direct will take place later today at 10 a.m. ET. Update: During the North American Nintendo Direct, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed that the map packs would be added to the region's eShop today as well.

3DS sales 'weaker than expected' outside Japan, Nintendo lowers annual profit forecast

Nintendo is lowering its annual profit forecast after recording a larger than expected loss for the first six months of the fiscal year, having reported "weaker than expected" sales of the Nintendo 3DS outside of Japan. The company's forecast for the 2013 fiscal year has lowered from ¥20 billion, or roughly $250.6 million in profits, to ¥6 billion, or roughly $75.2 million, despite seeing 5.6 million 3DS units sold during the first half of the fiscal year and 19.03 million software sales. Nintendo however made a smaller loss throughout the six months ending September 2012 in comparison to the same period last year. New Super Mario Bros. 2 downloadable content coming Oct. 4 to North America

North America is getting the scheduled downloadable content for New Super Mario Bros. 2 on 3DS this Thursday, Oct. 4, Nintendo of America announced today in a Nintendo Direct Mini presentation. The Gold Rush Pack, Coin Challenge Pack A, and Nerve-Wrack Pack each include three Coin Rush Mode stages and will be available individually for $2.50. Packs can be purchased through the New Super Mario Bros. 2 in-game shop. While Gold Rush focuses on honing players' coin-collecting skills, the Coin Challenge Pack A will use the New Super Mario Bros. 2 website to track rankings and construct leaderboards based on this pack's results.
