New Super Mario Bros. U review: new tricks

Exploration is rewarded with the kind of tricks that I remember sharing with friends at school growing up It all starts with the world map. New Super Mario Bros. U sprawls the entire Mushroom Kingdom out onto one big map, rather than a series of linear levels or smaller maps split up by zone as seen in previous New Super Mario Bros. games. The impact from this change is hard to spot initially, as the first few of the game's eight themed worlds seem to have simple levels. But by the third or fourth world, I stumbled across my first hidden exit, and New Super Mario Bros U's depth was revealed. Levels that appear to be straightforward, left-to-right scrolling stages — even those early ones — have branches that lead to rooms full of coins, bonus power-ups or even whole extra levels....

The PlayStation 4 will cost 3,999 Brazilian reais (approximately $1,733) when it launches in the country on Nov. 29. Sony's general manager for Latin America, Mark Stanley, later explained that 63 percent of that price...

EarthBound was the third bestselling Wii U eShop game in the US last month

The recent Virtual Console release of Super NES game EarthBound is, according to Nintendo, off to a great start. In an announcement from Nintendo of America today, the company said the Wii U game was the third bestselling eShop game on Wii U, with only New Super Luigi U and Pikmin 3 besting the SNES re-release in terms of consumer spend. The downloadable release of EarthBound was just one of a few key digital successes for Nintendo in the United States, the company said. Sales of Nintendo 3DS game Animal Crossing: New Leaf have passed 660,000 units in the states, with physical and digital sales combined, with 150,000 of those happening in July. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon sales passed the 820,000 mark — again, with digital and physical sales combined — and New Super Mario Bros. U sales...

New Super Luigi U added Nabbit in multiplayer to avoid using Mario

Nintendo added antagonistic thief Nabbit as a multiplayer character in New Super Mario Bros. U add-on content, New Super Luigi U, to solve a number of issues surrounding the game mode, according to the latest Iwata Asks feature. According to New Super Luigi U director Masataka Takemoto and producer Takashi Tezuka, Nabbit was initially added a playable character choice for multiplayer because they thought it would be too confusing to have Luigi and three Toads on screen at once — and they wanted to avoid adding Mario. "When we decided on Luigi as the main character, I talked with Tezuka-san about how I was absolutely against having Mario make an appearance," said Takemoto. "The idea came up of using three Toads, but when three Toads show up, the screen gets confusing, so I hounded...

New Super Luigi U trailer shows Luigi and Nabbit tackling the harder remixed levels

Nintendo has previously said that New Super Luigi U will be more challenging than its parent game New Super Mario Bros. U, and a new E3 trailer shows a handful of the challenges that lie ahead. Luigi, the two Toads and new playable character Nabbit must navigate lava-filled caverns and moving platforms covered with carnivorous Piranha Plants to reach the finish line. As previously mentioned on Nintendo Direct, Luigi is faster and jumps higher than his brother Mario, but doesn't stop as quickly. The course timer has also been lowered to a mere 100 seconds. New Super Luigi U boasts 80 remixed levels and will be available as standalone DLC from the Nintendo eShop in June, or as a slightly more expensive boxed release in August.
