After the officiating, television announcers are probably the most consistently despised participants in a major sporting event. Some guys are invulnerable. The Dodgers' Vin Scully is a good example. But long tenure and major assignments don't make a boothman bulletproof. I've never understood why Joe Buck rates such nonstop anger at everything he says, down to the prepositions. It seems to stem from an overreaction to an end zone celebration in 2005, and an under-reaction to just about everything else. But I can't pretend to be above it all when there are announcers like ESPN's Mike Patrick who drive me to the same level of resentment. Once someone says something tone deaf or insipid, particularly if it walks all over an important moment, or makes you not want to watch your favorite...

This spring, the Boston Bruins will win their second Stanley Cup in four years, according to EA Sports' simulation of the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs in NHL 14. The Bruins, the best team in hockey during the 2013-14 regular season, defeated the San Jose Sharks four games to two in EA's simulation. They eked by the New York Rangers with an overtime victory in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals after taking down the Detroit Red Wings in the first round and the Montreal Canadiens in the semifinals. Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask led the way, posting a 1.56 goals-against average and a 16-6-2 record with four shutouts in 24 playoff games. Last year's real-life Western Conference champions, the Chicago Blackhaws, were sent home in the second round by the Colorado Avalanche, who fell to the...

In the latest iteration of developer EA Canada's annual simulation of the full hockey season, NHL 14's predicted the St. Louis Blues as the Stanley Cup champion for the 2013-14 NHL season, the studio announced today. It would be the first Stanley Cup in the history of the Blues, a team that was founded in 1967 and has appeared in the Stanley Cup Finals three times. In NHL 14's simulation, the Blues finished second in the Western Conference's Central Division, and third in the conference itself. The team defeated the Minnesota Wild, Los Angeles Kings and the defending champion Chicago Blackhawks on the way to a Finals matchup with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Ultimate Team mode that's so popular in EA Sports' NHL franchise is growing in NHL 14 with online seasons, publisher Electronic Arts announced this week. Developer EA Canada is taking the same structure from online seasons in the FIFA Soccer games and bringing it into NHL 14. Your team will compete in ranked divisions; do better and you'll move up, but play poorly and you'll drop in the ranks. Better performance will provide you with rewards in the form of EA Pucks, in-game currency that you can spend on additional card packs. And you'll earn in-game trophies for winning division titles, league titles and playoff cup tournaments. In addition, EA Pucks can now be earned in game modes outside of Ultimate Team, so you have more opportunities to add to your Ultimate Team funds. You'll...

A new trailer for EA Sports' NHL 14 shows the new "Be a Pro" mode in which a player's decisions off the ice matter nearly as much as their actions on it. After creating his or her character and joining one of the NHL teams, a player will have to face media questions in press conferences and make choices off the ice like how to react when a fan asks for his autograph while he's eating. Depending on the player's actions, the media, public and other members of the team may gain or lose respect for the fictional pro. If the player's character gains enough renown, he can collect media endorsements, like being on the cover of the fictional version of EA's NHL series. NHL 14 hits Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on Sept. 10.
