At a GDC 2013 panel today, Rosa Thomas, principal program manager at Microsoft, explained how to use Microsoft's SmartGlass technology as a "first-class input device." SmartGlass represents Microsoft's desire "to focus on the living room, on the main screen connected to an Xbox" and deliver "extra entertainment" through a second screen, Thomas said. Its applications range from simple functionality like controlling a movie's playback to adding features like tying IMDB entries and extra content into the SmartGlass application. Microsoft sees SmartGlass as "first-class input device," she said, highlighting the ability to enter text on Xbox with a paired SmartGlass device. SmartGlass' most common use case allows users to connect to and control their Xbox 360 with the SmartGlass app on...

Japan Review Check: Wii U launch edition
By Kevin Gifford on Dec 05, 2012 12.05.12
The Wii U finally launches on Nintendo's home turf of Japan Dec. 8, and this week's issue of Famitsu magazine reviews the entire launch lineup. All except for Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U. Why the omission? Who knows — Nintendo occasionally refuses to give advance copies of their big-name titles to the Japanese media for review, for reasons that are clear only to them. Still, the rest of the lineup is reviewed scored. Here are some of the juicier highlights: - Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (9/9/8/9, 35 points out of 40): "The biggest selling point is being able to enjoy the hunt in full-on HD, and I have to admit, the larger monsters really have a presence now. The interface and sound packages have also been improved, and the Wii U GamePad controls work well and make...

4 CommentsDell selling Wii U hardware and software
By Samit Sarkar on Nov 14, 2012 11.14.12
The Wii U and a select few games are now available for pre-order from Dell. Dell's video game section already offers every other modern console and handheld: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS. Dell isn't selling the cheaper Basic Set; just the Deluxe Set. However, it cannot be purchased alone; it is only available in a $459.99 bundle with Madden NFL 13 and Just Dance 4. And there's no guarantee that pre-ordering the bundle means you'll get it on launch day or shortly afterward — according to Dell, it "usually ships" in one to two weeks. Seven Wii U games are currently available from Dell: Nintendo Land, which already comes with the Deluxe Set; New Super Mario Bros. U.; Madden NFL 13; Just Dance 4; Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge; Batman: Arkham City...

By Tracey Lien on Nov 13, 2012 11.13.12
Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge for Wii U will not feature Steel and Bone quick-time events (QTEs) and enemy intelligence will be "revamped" so that they fight to the death instead of pleading for their lives, according to Team Ninja studio head Yosuke Hayashi. In an interview with Siliconera, Hayashi detailed a few of the changes that have been made to the Wii U version of the game that set it apart from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation versions released earlier this year. He says that Nintendo's Wii U console isn't about power as much as it's about challenging developers to make creative games. To that end, Hayashi says that Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge will utilize the tools the console has to offer to create a "convenient" console experience. The game will allow players to use the...
