Persona 4 Arena review: awakened potential

The logic of borrowing characters from an RPG to use in a fighting game is a bit opaque, but at least the Persona universe is suited to this genre change-up. Picking up a couple of months after the events of Persona 4, that game’s cast of plucky high school students plan a reunion for the return of the protagonist, now voiced and given the playful name Yu. A series of sinister mishaps unravel their plans, leading the crew back into an alternate dimension where a mysterious villain has set up a tournament pitting them against one another. As goofy as the anime-inspired story is, concepts such as shadow versions of each character are already built into the world of Persona, making for relatively forgivable logic governing the motives of each bout. Persona 4 ESRB rating indicates possible PS3 release

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 has been rated "M" for PlayStation 3 by the ESRB, indicating a future re-release of the PlayStation 2 title. Persona 4 Arena update coming to Japan this year with new series character

Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold, the arcade-only updated version of Persona 4: Arena, will be available in Japan later this year, Atlus announced today in a new trailer for the game. The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold adds a handful of new characters and piles new scenarios onto Arena's storyline. Players can now head into the ring with Persona 3 characters Junpei Iori and Yukari Takeba, or a mysterious character new to the Persona series, Sho Minazuki. It is unclear whether Minazuki is your ally or enemy. Current speculation is that Minazuki is involved in the unannounced Persona 5, which Atlus confirmed was in development as of August 2012. Possible Persona 4 Arena sequel revealed (update: it's a Japan-only patch)

A possible sequel or expansion to Persona 4 Arena was revealed by Arc System Works, according to Famitsu, and includes two new fighters with unique systems: Yukari Takeba and Junpei Iori. According to another Famitsu article, translated by Shoryuken, the new Persona 4 Arena sequel will feature new moves and skills for existing characters. The two new characters have styles and systems unique to Persona 4 Arena. Yukari is a fast fighter, has wind-type "Garu" skills, specializes with a bow and good close range with jump attacks. Her bow attacks are fast, difficult to avoid and great at long range. Her arrow becomes a guided missile if it hits "Maha Garu." Evo 2013 Grand Final winners, DM MCZ Xian crowned Super Street Fighter 4 world champion

The winners of annual fighting game tournament Evo were decided over the weekend, with DM MCZ Xian winning the Super Street Fighter 4 world championship during tonight's Evo 2013 grand finals. DM MCZ Xian defeated MCZ Tokido in the Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition Version 2012 grand final tonight. Last year's champion, Seon-woo Lee "Infiltration," was knocked out in an earlier round. Germinator and Pinball Arcade come to PS Plus Instant Game Collection May 21

Two new games will join the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection next week, according to the PlayStation Blog: Germinator (PS Vita) and Pinball Arcade (PS3 and PS Vita, Cross-Buy enabled). On May 21, PlayStation Plus members will be able to pick up both Germinator and Pinball Arcade for free, while non-members can buy them individually for $9.99 on the PlayStation Network. Persona 4 Arena: Official Design Works artbook English localization coming this July

The English localization of the Persona 4 Arena: Official Design Works artbook will debut this July at San Diego Comic Con, publisher Udon Entertainment announced today. According to the publisher, the compilation of artwork for last year's brawler Persona 4 Arena is "one of the most-requested art books in [the] company's history." The book features character designs and original storyboards as well as background information linked to the game's content and interviews with its creators at Atlus and Arc System Works. The book will be available for $39.99 and is already up for pre-order on Amazon. Udon Entertainment's upcoming releases also include the Street Fighter x Tekken Artworks, Okami Official Complete Works and The Art of Brütal Legend.

Persona 4 Arena, the 2D fighter sequel to Persona 4, will be available to players in Europe on May 10, Atlus announced today. Atlus also revealed pre-order bonus content available alongside the European version. Players can snag a limited edition pack including the Persona 4 Arena Official Arranged Soundtrack, exclusive artwork and a "Digital Fan Pack," which seems to be a bundle of Persona images for use on social media websites. Arc System Works' 2D fighting game set in the Persona universe, Persona 4 Arena, may finally make its way to Europe this May, according to an update from regional publisher Zen United. "We are now in submission for the Xbox 360 build of Persona 4 Arena," reads an update from the Persona Europe Facebook page.
