As game players diversify, developers start to rethink the stars of their games

Increasingly those players who aren't white and male — the stereotypical view of who plays video games — are asking why they don't have the ability to play the games they love as characters that they can more easily identify with. Why isn't there more diversity in the fictional worlds of video games, where players can be anything that game-makers imagine? The topic, specifically the lack of realistic female protagonists in blockbuster games, became a major talking point at this year's E3 after the people behind the next installment of massive hit series Assassin's Creed said they abandoned women assassins in the cooperative mode of their game because adding them would have required too much work. "It's double the animations, it's double the voices, all that stuff and double the...

PlanetSide 2 trailer prepares for PS4 landing

Already available for Windows PC, multiplayer shooter PlanetSide 2 is coming to PS4 later this year. A new E3 trailer released today offers an overview of the free-to-play science fiction battle-sim. As well as those sharp PS4 looks, the game will support remote play on the PS Vita as well as the touchpad on the DualShock 4 controller, according to a company FAQ. It does not require a PlayStation Plus subscription to play. Reviewing the Sony Online Entertainment game back in 2012, Polygon said it offers "big, beautiful wars" that, although imperfect, are never predictable.

Gaming is helping to keep the PC market alive, PC gaming panel says

During today's computer gaming panel at PAX East 2014, "The (Incredible) Future of PC Gaming," the topic at hand was — as you may have guessed — a contrarian viewpoint to the conventional wisdom that holds that the PC is on the decline. At the same time, it's not as if the panelists, who came from a wide spectrum of the PC gaming industry, were blind to the realities of the market. They just focused on the gaming segment of the platform. Gaming, they said, will keep the PC relevant for the foreseeable future. According to the panelists, there are many positive aspects of the PC platform that are obvious, including how open it is and how customizable it allows games to be. The PC is also in a transition period as a whole, noted Tom Petersen, Nvidia's director of technical marketing —...

H1Z1, where players to take on the role of an apocalypse survivor in a world swarming with zombies, was first revealed earlier today when details of the podcast were teased. The game will be a free-to-play title with microtransactions but it won't be pay-to-win and nor will it require a subscription.
