Plants vs Zombies 2: Far Future sci-fi expansion on show

Jetpack Zombie and Laser Bean are two of the characters making an appearance in Far Future, the first expansion for Plants vs Zombies 2. Electronic Arts and PopCap's update, out now for iOS and Android, introduces a futuristic map, eight new plants and 10 freshly emerged zombie types. Today's trailer shows some of the new characters dropped into the game's signature tower defense gameplay. PopCap launched Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time on iOS last year, followed by the game's release on Android two months later. Downloads of this second installment in the series quickly exceeded total sales of the original 2010 release, according to EA.

EA revealed three of the update's plant types in a blog post this week, which includes a Citron designed to damage "Mech-type" zombies such as the Robo-Cone Zombie and the Disco-tron 3000, a Laser Bean can be used for piercing through the shield used by Shield Zombie types, and Star-Fruits that can shoot stars to attack zombies across every row. PopCap promises shorter delays in bringing games to new platforms

Plants vs. Zombies 2 is now available on Android devices worldwide, just over two months following its global release on iOS. Android users may be muttering the game's subtitle — "It's About Time" — about today's release of the free-to-play tower defense title. But the Android version of Plants vs. Zombies 2 represents another important milestone for developer PopCap Games: The studio is finally getting a handle on delivering platform parity. "In terms of the game content itself, and the things that you can buy, [the iOS and Android versions are] at parity. Which is nice for us," said Tony Leamer, Plants vs. Zombies franchise business director, in an interview with Polygon yesterday. Leamer acknowledged that content parity across platforms certainly wasn't the case with the original P...

Plants vs. Zombies 2 launches for Android in Australia and New Zealand

The Android "soft launch" for Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time, PopCap Games' free-to-play sequel to its undead-infused tower defense game, is now live in Australia and New Zealand. "The full global release of Plants vs. Zombies 2 for Android will launch shortly," according to a press release from publisher Electronic Arts and PopCap. The game's staggered Android launch mirrors that of its iOS counterpart, which had a soft launch in Australia and New Zealand in early July. Plants vs. Zombies 2 launched worldwide in the iOS App Store for iPad and iPhone in mid-August and was approaching 25 million downloads within weeks. PopCap announced the October Android launch late last month. You can learn more about the game's development in our interview with producer Allen Murray.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 launching on Android in October

Plants vs. Zombies 2, EA and PopCap's fast-paced, free-to-play strategy title, will launch on Android devices next month, according to a source familiar with EA's operations. According to the source, Plants vs. Zombies 2 — which launched on iOS last month worldwide, and on Android only in China earlier this month — was given the launch window of October, though no firm release date was revealed. We have reached out to EA to try and find out something more specific for the game's international Android release date. For more on the game's development, check out our interview with producer Allen Murray from earlier this summer. Late last month, PopCap announced that the game was approaching 25 million downloads through the iOS App Store alone.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 approaching 25 million downloads

Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time has been downloaded "nearly" 25 million times worldwide, developer PopCap announced today. Downloads of the second installment in PopCap's zombie-smashed series have exceed total sales of the original 2010 Plants vs. Zombies, the company revealed. According to an infographic posted to the official PopCap website, Plants vs. Zombies 2 players have racked up 81 million hours of gameplay, generating 39 billion in-game suns and cultivating 10 billion plants against 5.4 billion waves of zombies. Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time is free-to-play and can be downloaded via the App Store for iPad and iPhone. During Gamescom last week, publisher Electronic Arts announced the title would receive a major content update in the coming months, called Far...

Plants vs. Zombies 2 getting Far Future update

Plants vs. Zombies 2 developer PopCap Games is working on the zombie defense title's first major content update, Far Future, said Plants vs. Zombies franchise director Tony Leamer during EA's Gamescom 2013 press briefing today. PopCap launched Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time on iOS last week. In five days, it has been downloaded 16 million times, which makes it EA's most successful mobile launch to date. The studio has yet to announce an Android release date.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 launches for iOS tomorrow

Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time will launch for iOS tomorrow, according to a post from the App Store on Facebook. The post teasing the game's release is paired with the above image of a zombified hand. "It's about time," the post reads. "Guess what game is coming tomorrow?" Plants vs. Zombies 2 was slated for launch late this spring before being delayed again until July. The game is a sequel to the zombie-themed tower-defense title; it will feature new settings and situations for players to fend off zombies. For more on why Plants vs. Zombies 2 was delayed, check out our interview with senior producer Allen Murray.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 dev diary talks time-traveling taco trackers

A new developer diary for Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time discusses the game's scenario and the challenges of moving forward while preserving the essence of a beloved original game. Immediately after the defeat of Dr. Zomboss at the end of the first game, the player's neighbor Crazy Dave eats a taco in celebration. It's so good that he wants to eat it again, and invents a time machine to go back to before he ate the taco to do precisely that. However, the time machine malfunctions and throws Dave and the Player back through the ages. Plants vs. Zombies 2 includes a World Map, a first for the series, in which the player can progress through three eras: Ancient Egypt, the age of piracy, and the Wild West. Specifically, these are the eras included "at launch," indicating that more...
