Jetpack Zombie and Laser Bean are two of the characters making an appearance in Far Future, the first expansion for Plants vs Zombies 2. Electronic Arts and PopCap's update, out now for iOS and Android, introduces a futuristic map, eight new plants and 10 freshly emerged zombie types. Today's trailer shows some of the new characters dropped into the game's signature tower defense gameplay. PopCap launched Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time on iOS last year, followed by the game's release on Android two months later. Plants vs. Zombies 2 is now available on Android devices worldwide, just over two months following its global release on iOS. Android users may be muttering the game's subtitle — "It's About Time" — about today's release of the free-to-play tower defense title. But the Android version of Plants vs. Zombies 2 represents another important milestone for developer PopCap Games: The studio is finally getting a handle on delivering platform parity. "In terms of the game content itself, and the things that you can buy, [the iOS and Android versions are] at parity. Which is nice for us," said Tony Leamer, Plants vs. Zombies franchise business director, in an interview with Polygon yesterday. Leamer acknowledged that content parity across platforms certainly wasn't the case with the...

The Android "soft launch" for Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time, PopCap Games' free-to-play sequel to its undead-infused tower defense game, is now live in Australia and New Zealand. "The full global release of Plants vs. Zombies 2 for Android will launch shortly," according to a press release from publisher Electronic Arts and PopCap. The game's staggered Android launch mirrors that of its iOS counterpart, which had a soft launch in Australia and New Zealand in early July. Plants vs. Zombies 2 launched worldwide in the iOS App Store for iPad and iPhone in mid-August and was approaching 25 million downloads within weeks. PopCap announced the October Android launch late last month. You can learn more about the game's development in our interview with producer Allen Murray.

For more on the game's development, check out our interview with producer Allen Murray from earlier this summer. A new developer diary for Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time discusses the game's scenario and the challenges of moving forward while preserving the essence of a beloved original game. Immediately after the defeat of Dr. Zomboss at the end of the first game, the player's neighbor Crazy Dave eats a taco in celebration. It's so good that he wants to eat it again, and invents a time machine to go back to before he ate the taco to do precisely that. However, the time machine malfunctions and throws Dave and the Player back through the ages. Plants vs. Zombies 2 includes a World Map, a first for the series, in which the player can progress through three eras: Ancient Egypt, the age of piracy, and the Wild West. Specifically, these are the eras included "at launch," indicating that more...
