Gotta buy 'em all: Pokémon Center delivers Poké-plushies to your doorstep (update)

The Pokémon Center, the web-based store for Pokémon fans in the U.S., launched in full today with a wide variety of Pokémon merchandise. Today's opening follows the Pokémon Center's soft launch on July 2. The website appears to be suffering from high traffic at the moment; we're seeing plenty of "the site is closed temporarily" notices. But if you can get in, you can purchase items such as Pikachu plushies ($12.99), Chespin T-shirts ($24.95) and Charizard mugs ($14.95). The Pokémon games themselves, both video and card, are also available. And the store is marking its launch with a Grand Opening Collection featuring note cards, binders, notebooks, pins and more branded with Special Delivery Pikachu and other Pokémon. Check out the Pokémon Center for the full array of Pokémon goods. U...

Twitch Plays Pokémon starting Pokémon X on July 27 thanks to modded 3DS

Twitch Plays Pokémon, the gaming phenomenon that took the internet by storm earlier this year, is moving to the most recent generation of Pokémon titles this weekend with a playthrough of Pokémon X. The Twitch channel and its viewers are set to begin playing Pokémon X at midnight ET on Sunday, July 27. In the meantime, the channel is streaming Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Once Pokémon X is completed, Twitch Plays Pokémon will return to Pokémon Stadium 2 as the main interstitial game between other specific titles, according to the channel's description. Twitch Plays Pokémon essentially works as a massively multiplayer co-op playthrough of a Pokémon title. Viewers type into the chat, and the channel parses certain commands into game inputs. It only works through an emulator for the...

Japan's Pikachu Cafe lets you eat Pokémon in burger and curry form

Pokémon fans will have the opportunity to eat Pikachu's likeness in hamburger, beef curry and mango pudding parfait form starting this weekend with the opening of Tokyo's Pikachu Cafe. The Pikachu-themed cafe is part of the Pokémon the Movie XY exhibition, which will serve Pikachu food and sell other Pokemon limited edition goods, like postcards, t-shirts and tote bags. But the real, perishable draw is the Pikachu food. In addition to a teriyaki burger with Pikachu ear-shaped tortilla chips — which costs 1,080 yen (about $10) — the cafe offers Pikachu pancakes, curry buns and two types of Poké Balls: one made out of rice, the other made of mousse. The Pokémon the Movie XY exhibition will be open from July 19 to Aug. 31 in Roppongi Hills. Here's a sampling of the Pikachu-themed menu...

In the Pokémon universe, what do humans eat?

The world of Pokémon is one that starts to fall apart, or at least appear unsettling, if you think about it too hard: The entire series of games and anime is built upon humans capturing animals and keeping them cooped up in tiny plastic balls until they're ready to force the creatures to fight each other. And it turns out that the humans' exploitation of Pokémon likely goes further, according to Modern Farmer. "Simply put, it is a fact that people eat Pokémon," says Modern Farmer. Evidence includes the hunting of Farfetch'd to near-extinction. There's also the fact that the tail of the dim-witted Slowpoke is a rare, highly valued commodity because it is "tasty" and "nutritious." In Pokémon Gold/Pokémon Silver, Team Rocket's practice of cutting off the tails and selling them is frowned...

Pokemon X, Y players to unlock new Vivillon Pokemon pattern at 100M global trades

Pokemon X and Y players have traded worldwide via the Global Trade System about 90 million times and will be able to hunt down a special Pokemon once that number tops 100 million, The Pokemon Company announced today. The addition is a Vivillon, a bug and flying-type Pokemon that can display more than 15 different patterns on its wings. The design, pictured above, that will be available to all players is known as the "Fancy Pattern." Although patterns are usually available to players based on their region, the Fancy Pattern Vivillon will be an exception. "Because of this characteristic, players around the world have been exchanging Vivillon via the GTS to collect all of the regional patterns," the announcement reads. "This newly discovered Vivillon breaks with that tradition: it will...

Pokémon Honedge created by Man at Arms

Master swordsmith Man at Arms is back, and this time he has turned his talents to creating a real life Honedge from Pokémon X / Y. Unlike many of his previous efforts, including League of Legends' Zenith Blade and Halo's Energy Sword, much of the work that went into Honedge concerns its distinctive hilt and pommel, rather than the blade. Honedge looks like a medieval sword, with an eye-like hilt centerpiece and a leather attachment.

The Pokemon Company has revealed a new rock-and-fairy-type mythical Pokemon in Pokemon X and Y called Diancie. Diancie, which you can get a look at in the trailer below, is an "extremely rare" Pokemon that cannot be obtained during normal gameplay. The Pokemon is said to "produce a great volume of diamonds instantaneously by compressing air between its hands," and boasts "the greatest beauty in all the world." Code for Diancie was discovered by hackers last year, along with Volcanion and Hoopa. Details on how to capture the mysterious Pokemon will be released at a later date.
