Polygon contacted about 30 developers and publishers making highly promising games and asked them, what makes your game so special? Why should gamers be excited about your new game? These games represent just a slice of the many great titles on offer this year and, judging by the responses we received, developers are finding different ways to use technology and design ideas to progress their particular genres. The themes of 2014 are about going back to core genres, finding out what makes them really work, and then looking further afield to bring in ideas and mechanics that can bring some unique quality to the games. Indie games are new exhibit at Museum of the Moving Image

An exhibition of 25 playable indie games is being launched by the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, N.Y. "Indie Essentials: 25 Must-Play Video Games" is being organized in partnership with IndieCade and will feature the award-winners from this week's IndieCade: International Festival of Independent Games, which is taking place in Los Angeles on Oct. 5 and 6. IndieCade 2013 finalists revealed, include Gone Home, TowerFall and more

The 36 games which will serve as finalists at next month's IndieCade 2013 exhibition have been announced, including recently released titles like Gone Home, TowerFall and Gunpoint. The games, which will be showcased during IndieCade 2013 in Culver City, Calif., on the weekend of Oct. 5, were chosen from a lengthy list of 850 submissions. The titles will be showcased alongside over 120 games from exhibitors attending the event, including Nintendo, PlayStation, Ouya and Oculus Rift. Quadrilateral Cowboy teaches you to hack your way to criminal success

Blendo Games, the studio behind Gravity Bone and Thirty Flights of Loving, offers a look at its upcoming cyberpunk title Quadrilateral Cowboy in a short gameplay video. The game allows players to take on the role of a criminal whose only goal is to steal information. Users will learn code to hack into systems in order to get the coded info, while this knowledge can also be used to re-purpose technology throughout the game to escape getting caught. Tools "such as the projector, that displays a false image to fool guards and cameras," can be used throughout to keep under the radar of those attempting to stop the user.
