Back catalog, digital drive Ubisoft's better-than-expected sales

Ubisoft reported €76 million (approximately $99.5 million) in sales for the first fiscal quarter ending June 30, which the company said is slightly higher than its initial targets and was bolstered by sales of its back catalog and digital games. Despite overshooting initial estimates of €70 million ($91.6 million), first-quarter sales were down 42.2 percent compared to the same period last fiscal year, which brought in €131 million ($171.5 million) and included the launch of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. The company also saw a 56 percent increase in back catalog game sales and attributed the increase to the "solid performance" of Assassin's Creed 3, Far Cry 3, Just Dance 4, Rocksmith and Rayman Origins. Ubisoft also reported "continued momentum" in the sales of digital...

Rayman Legends will include 40 remastered Rayman Origins levels

Rayman Legends will include updated versions of 40 levels that originally made their debut in Rayman Origins, Rayman creator Michel Ancel told Shacknews. Ancel described these bonus levels as a collection of the "best levels" from Origins. For Legends, they have been remastered and include additional new features, as well as implement Legends' new lighting engine and touch controls for fly pal Murfy in the Wii U and PlayStation Vita versions. According to Ancel, these levels have been modified "to make sure that players who already knew these levels would still be entertained when playing them." The levels will be part of a bonus unlockble chapter called "Back to Origins." The team at Ubisoft Montpellier chose to include this chapter because "Rayman Origins doesn't exist on Wii U,"...

Rayman Legends' design philosophy: breathe life into concept art

The design philosophy behind Ubisoft Montpellier's Rayman Legends was to create a world that felt and looked as beautiful as its initial concept art, according to a post by level designer Chris McEntee on the Ubisoft blog. McEntee said the UbiArt design framework enabled the developers to create a functioning, interactive work of art. The first game to utilize UbiArt was Rayman Origins, and Rayman Legends will be the second title built with the software. "The mission statement was simple: We want to play inside the concept art," McEntee wrote. "Our team in Montpellier found it unfortunate that beautiful concept art only ever amounted to just that — concepts." In order to give the side-scrolling platformer more depth of field, designers used HD sprites and objects and colored them to...

Ubisoft Montpellier developers discuss 'Reinventing Rayman'

First, to explain who Rayman is, the developers introduced a short video from Rayman's creator, Michel Ancel: "The creation of Rayman was very simple," said Ancel, standing in the bright Montpellier daylight. "It was something I did when I was around 20. It was the character I wanted to make. He's a very simple and direct character. He's not talking, it's really about action. All the animation and design is done so you understand the character just by looking at it. It's not about storytelling; it's about a direct connection between you and the character." For Rayman Origins, the recent current-generation revival of the character, the developers returned the franchise to 2D platforming. The perspective simplified the game's design and made playing with friends easier. According to...
